signs of toxic mold in house | mold mitigation

Fungi reproduce by means of spores which are spread through the air but land and survive on surfaces. Many spores can remain dormant for long periods under dry conditions, but typically develop into fungi in the presence of moisture.
I’ve always wanted to say thanks to internet and many thanks to all those who for heartful reasons take their time and share their knowledge to help others with everyday complications – Mellisa, you’re one of those who would save the dayCn
Biotoxic illness refers to the cause of a person’s illness. All biotoxic illnesses have one common denominator…toxins produced by living things.  The tests contained in this panel look at the complex cascade of events throughout multiple inflammatory pathways produced by biotoxic mold exposure
I had many of these less common symptoms of black mold poisoning. That made it very difficult for me to believe that my symptoms were actually that of black mold poisoning, even though I knew I had been exposed to high levels of stachybotrys and chaetomium.
If you have an area of black mold that is more than 10 square feet, consult the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guide titled “Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings.” This document also applies to other building types.
In the early 2000s Toshiyuki Nakagaki, then at Hokkaido University in Japan, and his colleagues chopped up a single polycephalum and scattered the pieces throughout a plastic maze. The smidgens of slime mold began to grow and find one another, burgeoning to fill the entire labyrinth. Nakagaki and his teammates placed blocks of agar packed with nutrients at the start and end of the maze. Four hours later the slime mold had retracted its branches from dead-end corridors, growing exclusively along the shortest path possible between the two pieces of food.
I wanted to find out how to get rid of mold naturally and I didn’t want to use anything toxic that I may breathe or get on my skin, so I started looking up some natural options for removing mold. I found three main options that sounded good. One was using essential oils such as tea tree oil and the other ones were using vinegar or hydrogen peroxide. I like using all of these options because not only are they very effective in killing mold but they are natural ingredients I am comfortable with. Of course there is the option of using bleach and many people say they had good results with it , but that’s not natural. It’s something that I would never want to use unless it was an absolute last resort!
Toxic black mold mycotoxins that are in the air can enter a person’s eyes. The mycotoxins are cytotoxic (toxic to cells) and when they come into contact with eye cells they cause inflamed and injured eyes and create vision problems.
What is the best way for regular maintenance cleaning of my shower? I have CIRS and chemical sensitivities. Can I use a scrub brush and my essential oils to scrub the floor and walls of my shower? I can see that some mold is starting to form so I’m not sure if it’s safe for me to clean it. If someone else cleans it for me, can they use bleach or strong cleansers to kill the mold/mildew? The leftover odor will likely bother me, but the mold might bother me more. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
The EPA considers bacteria, molds, mildew, viruses, animal dander, cat saliva, house dust, mites, cockroaches and pollen all biological contaminants. Excessive moisture creates breeding grounds for these contaminants, so ventilate adequately and keep relative humidity between 30 percent and 50 percent to prevent condensation on building materials.

What We Do

Stachybotrys chartarum (also known by its synonym Stachybotrys atra) is a greenish-black mold. It can grow on material with a high cellulose and low nitrogen content, such as fiberboard, gypsum board, paper, dust, and lint. Growth occurs when there is moisture from water damage, excessive humidity, water leaks, condensation, water infiltration, or flooding. Constant moisture is required for its growth. It is not necessary, however, to determine what type of mold you may have. All molds should be treated the same with respect to potential health risks and removal.
Health problems from mold exposure are on the increase. One problem with being exposed to mold is that many people suffer with symptoms and they never find out that it’s due to the mold. Even doctors are often unaware of the health implications surrounding mold exposure. Symptoms can range from runny nose, headaches, rashes, fatigue, depression and memory problems to more serious health problems such as respiratory or neurological conditions. Mold exposure has also been found to be associated with cancers. This why it is important to remove mold in your home as soon as possible with any of these suggestions on how to get rid of mold naturally.
Choose a cleaning agent. Cleaning agents range from mild to potent and include both natural and chemical alternatives. If you have small children or pets in your home, you may want to consider a milder, natural solution over a powerful chemical one. If you have a more advanced mold problem, a stronger chemical may be necessary.
This fungus requires and thrives off moisture to survive. It will often appear as slimy and features a dark greenish-black(sometimes gray) coloration to it that is not often found as with other species and groups of this fungi.
3. Consider where your mold problem was, and which possessions were affected. If mold was throughout your house, or in your duct work, then likely everything in your house could have been exposed. In my house, the problem was in a sun room and two AC units on the first floor. But the spaces and possessions on the second floor did not seem to be affected.
hi, my name is Liesle I’m having the same problem. I’m trying to get my case together bc I’m going to see the owner in court.I wish you the best. My biggest problem was I was disabled before this. and all the mold doctors don’t take insurance. wheat do I do, I don’t have the money for this. Its a silent killer. Because not enough people know enough about it. Good luck to you, N I’ll be praying for you and everyone!!!
If you want to use vinegar to prevent mold growing on surfaces just spray vinegar on the surface and leave it. Repeat this every few days to ensure the surface will stay mold-free. You can even mop your tiled bathroom floor or other hard non-porous floors with vinegar if you are worried about mold growing on them.
You can also use lemon juice and baking soda made into a paste then brush onto clothes . It works great on towels that have molded, rub it on then wash in warm to hot water. Hang out in direct sunlight!! It helps to kill the mold.
Wipe the rubber and remove the detergent drawer every after wash. Replace it after it dries. You can also leave the door open for hours or even overnight every time you wash to prevent the mould and bad smell. If the rubber is already blackened by mould, it will stay clean by doing this.
To protect you and your family, make sure there is no peeling or chipped paint. You can encapsulate lead paint by painting over it. If you must scrape or sand lead paint, wear a HEPA respirator, enclose the workspace with plastic, keep debris contained and “work wet” to minimize dust. Clean up with a HEPA filter vacuum and damp mop, and be careful not to track lead dust through the house.
For instance, a combination of baking soda and vinegar may be just the ticket for getting rid of mold in damp clothing. If the clothing is sitting in a dark and poorly ventilated laundry room, then the conditions could be ripe for mold and mildew to develop.
Avoid ozone generators that are marketed as air cleaners. Despite pseudoscientific marketing claims that they control indoor air pollution with things like “energized oxygen” or “pure air,” they in fact dispense large concentrations of ozone, a toxic gas with vastly different chemical and toxicological properties from oxygen, which even in small concentrations can cause serious health problems. For this reason, be aware that most electrostatic ionizers also produce some ozone. Just remember the EPA adage for ozone: “Good up high, bad nearby.”
Air sampling does not allow identification of particular species of Penicillium, Aspergillus, Wallemia, etc., which is important because different species have different health effects. In addition, air sampling devices only collect a small sample of air from directly around the device. This matters because mold spores have different molecular weights, and some do not remain airborne for long.
If you have over 10 square feet of mold growth the EPA and the American Industrial Hygiene Association recommend you contact a professional. Most industry standards recommend, and some states mandate, you obtain an independent evaluation from a Qualified Indoor Environmental Professional (IEP) or Industrial Hygienist prior to having professional mold remediation performed. This will protect you, as the consumer, from being taken advantage of. Having a remediation company assess whether there is a problem, determine the severity of the problem, determine the steps needed to remedy, and bid the project presents a serious conflict of interest. Get an independent evaluation from an IEP and then have several remediation companies bid on the protocol supplied by the IEP. Also, I would suggest having the IEP return after the remediation and perform both a visual inspection and sampling to ensure the work has been completed satisfactorily. This is going to cost a little extra, but is definitely money well spent to ensure the mold is gone.
An allergy refers to a misguided reaction by our immune system in response to bodily contact with certain foreign substances. When these allergens come in contact with the body, it causes the immune system to develop an allergic reaction in people who are allergic to it. It is estimated that 50 million North Americans are affected by allergic conditions. The parts of the body that are prone to react to allergies include the eyes, nose, lungs, skin, and stomach. Common allergic disorders include hay fever, asthma, allergic eyes, allergic eczema, hives, and allergic shock.

  1. I have been diagnosed with BOOP, interstitial lung disease, Mycobacterium abscesses, Aspergillus fumigata, and other lung diseases by an infectious disease doctor and pulmonologist at national Jewish Hospital in Denver Colorado. Throughout the last 25 years I have lived in homes and worked in buildings that have had mold in them. My husband and I purchased a home recently in Hendersonville North Carolina. After the home inspection during which time there was no mold found, I began to have symptoms. I have hired an environmental scientist to do mold inspection/testing. Your article has been very helpful and I will use some of your texts for discussion when he comes back with his results. Do you happen to have a doctor in the Asheville/Hendersonville area? in 2011 they found the above referenced infections/molds. I was in the hospital for 30 days and on IV treatments for three months. Currently, I am on three antibiotics and will be for the rest of my life. I take amoxicillin, minicyclin, chlofasamine. Thank you for your work. Patricia
Getting rid of black mold with tea tree oil is an extremely effective method. Tea tree is an essential oil that is safe for people and pets. It is more expensive than vinegar but a few teaspoons go a long way. I’ve used it successfully on a small area of the rug and a moldy shower curtain.
Mike came out and inspected my place before I purchased it. He did a great job in explaining to me what he found. He also did a great job of getting the results back in time for me to close on my house.
Get a picture of it and take it to your local board of health and have them investigate it. They’ll let your landlord know if it’s black mold or not. If it is black mold, he may have to pay to get it fixed.
If you already see mold, you usually do NOT need to spend money on pretesting as we discuss here: Mold Inspections and Mold Testing. Plain and simple: You need to remove it. All mold must be removed and done so in the same way (as described in the next bullet point), regardless of the type of molds identified from testing. If a so-called mold professional insists that you need to spend hundreds of dollars on pre testing when mold is already visible, our advice is to be very wary because its simply a waste of money except in the rarest of circumstances.
Dr. Neil Nathan also shared some of the symptoms that he has found to be specifically associated with mold-related illness in his patient base of relatively severely affected chronic illness sufferers.
Note that identification of specific mold spores is not necessary when cleaning up indoor mold colonies. It may or may not be useful when treating health effects of mold exposure, depending on the circumstances. In any case, the role of testing for indoor mold is undefined, because as yet there are no standards for interpreting these tests.6

  2. “Lighting is also a big factor in falls,” says Meri-K Appy, president of Safe Kids USA, who recommends having lights at the top and the bottom of stairs. Also, don’t delay repairing loose treads and rails.
Black mold is easily distinguishable from other molds because, not surprisingly, it tends to be dark black. Black mold, also known as Stachybotrys chartarum or Stachybotrys atra, can be found indoors growing on a variety of surfaces, especially things with a high cellulose content like wood, fiberboard, gypsum board, paper, lint and dust. (2)
Molds also emit volatile chemicals that some experts believe could affect the human nervous system. Among them is Joan Bennett, a distinguished professor of plant biology and pathology at Rutgers University, who has devoted her career to the study of fungal toxins. She was living in New Orleans during the storm, and she recalls that while some health experts were worried about heavy-metal poisoning or cholera, she was worried about fungus.
I to get mold i use a dehumidifer i put plastic onmy windows for the winter but still get mold on them under the plastic i have to put plastic on windows to keep out the cold but will try all these again and see if it works

  3. The first VCS test is available at Dr. Shoemaker’s website, Surviving Mold, at a cost of $15. This is a Functional Visual Acuity Test (FACT) that uses a scoring algorithm developed by Drs. Shoemaker and Hudnell to determine the likelihood that a patient is being adversely affected by biotoxin exposure.
Mildew is a surface type of mold that won’t damage your home’s structure. But other types of mold cause rot. Probe the suspect area with a screwdriver or other sharp tool (Photo 3). If the wood is soft or crumbles, the fungi have taken hold and rot has begun. We’ll show you how to remove mold from wood in a few steps.
In the late 1990s, Dr. Shoemaker discovered a connection between a mysterious illness that some of his patients were experiencing and a toxin produced by a fish-killing dinoflagellate called Pfiesteria. Since then, Dr. Shoemaker has linked a similar kind of illness to toxins from a wide variety of microorganisms and chemicals.
People with a weakened immune system, such as people receiving treatment for cancer, people who have had an organ or stem cell transplant, and people taking medicines that suppress the immune system, are more likely to get mold infections.
