how to tell if mold is black mold | remove black mold in crawl space

If the wood you’re dealing with is either painted or stained, that means the mold has not penetrated. You can therefore stick to a mild cleaning solution—a simple mixture of dishwashing detergent and warm water. Dip a soft-bristled scrub brush into the soapy water you’ve prepared, then gently go over the moldy area. If you get unsatisfactory results, opt for vinegar, an effective mold killer. With a spray bottle filled with vinegar, spritz the mold and then let the vinegar sit for an hour to work its magic. Once enough time has elapsed, proceed to wipe down the wood with a clean, damp towel. Inspect the wood for any remaining mold, and if you don’t see any, wipe the wood down with a rag.

Press Board and other fake sheets of wood are the reason why there are rules in the USA (and the USA is the worst of all 1st world nations on taking environmental issue seriously) concerning prefab homes and mobile homes. They are basically BUILT with press board, oriented strand board and plywood (fake wood). When they started making prefabs REAL houses were not made with any of that except for some plywood. The rules in the USA state that *ALL* the air in a prefab (or equivalent) home must be fully vented (completely exchanged) every few minutes by a special system built into the house.

It is not always a good idea to use a fast drying fan to attempt drying out a mold contaminated area (such as carpet, drywall and so on). It is best to remove all contaminated items first (to include cutting out affected drywall) and then dispose of properly.
In an ideal world, we’d have CIRS-aware physicians in every city and town. Unfortunately, that is not the case. There are currently only a few Shoemaker-certified practitioners, and perhaps several others that are not certified but are actively treating CIRS. Please share this article with those you think may be interested so we can help to spread awareness of this debilitating yet under-recognized condition.
Toxic black mold or black mold is a name commonly used for Stachybotrys chartarum. It is one of the most infamous toxic molds because it can grow in houses and is extremely dangerous to humans. Stachybotrys is known as a toxic mold because it produces toxins called mycotoxins.
Chris, your podcast and several others have added so much value to my life and are helping me overcome chronic illness. I became aware of Dr. Shoemaker’s work in April 2015 when it suddenly hit me after listening to Dave Asprey’s podcast and being indoors on a rainy day that the illness I was suffering from was mold. (Maybe Lyme too.) I requested several tests from my doctor. I failed an online VCS test. I was hitting potholes because I couldn’t see them. I am realizing many people labeled with mental illness are suffering from mold-related sickness too. I was suicidal. It started with what I believe was exposure to Stachybotris. Mary Ackerley, integrative psychiatrist has a great article about it. http://www.survivingmold.com/community/mary-ackerley-the-brain-on-fire-the-role-of-toxic-mold-in-triggering-psychiatric-symptoms I am beginning recovery. Also I realized that connection between mycotoxins, glutamine and histamines. Stopping high histamine foods is also helping. You contribute so much to the community and are helping me tremendously. Bravo!
Molds and other fungi grow easily in damp indoor environments. People who spend time in such environments sometimes complain of respiratory effects, headaches, and other physical symptoms. In addition to visible or hidden mold, damp spaces likely harbor mold break-down products, dust mites, bacteria, and chemicals, gasses, and particulate matter released from the materials on which molds are growing. Given the difficulties in testing for all of these elements, hard evidence of precise cause-and-effect can be elusive.
Are you wondering how to test for mold? One option is to hire a professional mold tester to collect and analyze mold samples. A cheaper option is to order a black mold test kit, which you can use to collect mold samples yourself. You then send the samples to a professional mold testing laboratory.
My name is Emma. I lived in a place that had black toxic mold. And I’m trying to get proof it is still in my system bc I still feel sick. But I can’t find any doctor that will take my insurance bc I can’t afford to pay cash. I’m disabled. PLEASE HELP
But I recently discovered that Life Extension offers this same panel of blood tests at a discount rate. This blood test panel also takes out the hassle of trying to get the tests done right and you don’t need a doctor to order it. But you may need a doctor to interpret it.
Black mold – the words alone are enough to make you cringe. It’s the last thing you need in your home. Any mold can cause problems for people who are allergic, of course, but those molds referred to as “black” or “toxic” are particularly dangerous. Chances are, if the conditions inside your home are hospitable to mold, you’re going to have it. If you suspect the mold is “black” or toxic, however, consider hiring a professional to remove it for you.
Even so, it is possible to assess and treat individuals who have symptoms of respiratory allergies and asthma. Khalili and colleagues emphasize that determining whether respiratory symptoms are related to mold exposure involves a process of elimination. Before mold is considered the likely cause of respiratory symptoms and infections, patients must be evaluated for the possible presence of pre-existing illness or the recent onset of an illness that happens to coincide with mold exposure. Once other possible causes of respiratory symptoms have been ruled out, patients can be assessed for the possibility of mold-induced illness.18
In the early 2000s Toshiyuki Nakagaki, then at Hokkaido University in Japan, and his colleagues chopped up a single polycephalum and scattered the pieces throughout a plastic maze. The smidgens of slime mold began to grow and find one another, burgeoning to fill the entire labyrinth. Nakagaki and his teammates placed blocks of agar packed with nutrients at the start and end of the maze. Four hours later the slime mold had retracted its branches from dead-end corridors, growing exclusively along the shortest path possible between the two pieces of food.
Hi Christina! His name is Dr Michael Rothman and he’s in Springlake, NJ. Address 1325 Warren Ave, 07762. His phone is listed as MD wellness and his phone is (732)268-7663. Brenda his nurse is very nice as is he and I don’t think he’s actually a naturopath but he believes firmly in finding out WHY you have problems and them wants to correct them…which is the only way to get well, right? He’s into nutrition, clean way of living and will prescribe meds only if absolutely necessary and appropriate which all Drs should be doing. He doesn’t take any insurance but when other stupid un informed Drs have destroyed your health, it a blessing to pay someone who actually knows what to look for, knows what labs to test, spends an 1 1/2 hrs for the first visit so you have plenty of time to talk uninterrupted and then gets it right. I’m not trying to paint him as a God, but right now in my book….he’s close! I had been suffering for close to 4yrs, was operated on 3x’s for nothing, many, many meds, labeled as a complainer with phychiatric problems who they just wanted to medicate with anti depressants and then to hear your not crazy and to see the lab results..IT MADE MY DAY and I’ve contacted a few of those “other Drs” to TELL them how far off the mark with what they did to me they were and it’s satisfying to see their faces when they look at the lab reports and I tell them what they should have done instead. I really think God I ended up in his office because I still wouldn’t have any answers and I’d still be living in this sick house not knowing any better. I’m trying now to find a clean place to rent, at least for a yr but I have money problems and also 8 cats…so it’s not easy but somehow it will work out…I hope! Good luck and if you have any questions for me, don’t hesitate to ask!
Yeah I have the same problem; tried almost everything. Trying the bleach test today; hope it works. My make is a UITLA wash and dryer, I don’t use the dryer as I have separate one, but still have the same problem as everyone else. It must be what they put in the washing powders. I will post a comment once I have tried this test.

A list of the biomarkers that constitute a CIRS diagnosis can be found on Dr. Shoemaker’s site. However, if you fail the VCS test, and/or suspect you may have CIRS, I strongly recommend finding a CIRS-aware clinician in your area. You can start with the list of clinicians that have been certified by Dr. Shoemaker on his website. There are other clinicians, like those of us at California Center for Functional Medicine, that are familiar with CIRS and are actively diagnosing and treating patients for it, but are not yet certified.
I have small spots of Black mold and dark Yellow circles forming on my ceiling in my room and has increased within 6months but due to work, I have only just noticed how bad it has got. I have also spotted white fluffy mould on wood and Black material on my wardrobe. My Asthma seems to have come back as I have noticed a difference to my breathing. I also drink more water then usual. Would Tea tree oil help with the Black and Yellow mold? Any help or advice would be great. Since reading up on it, it has freaked me out.
This illness happens after exposure to the interior environment of a Water-Damaged Building (WDB). There are many ways buildings become home to a toxic mix of microbes, and harmful chemicals. Buildings can host fungi, bacteria, mycobacteria, and actinomycetes as a result of construction defects like inappropriate ventilation, faulty construction of crawl spaces, inadequate building design, flat roofs, fake stucco cladding without adequate caulking, basements exposed to saturated ground water conditions, not correcting water leaks and more.
I am not sure that antibody test shows anything with regards to CIRS as CIRS is not an allergic reaction. I would get the blood work recommended by Dr Shoemaker done (see http://www.survivingmold.com/diagnosis/lab-orders), most importantly HLA-DR to see your genetics, MSH, C4a ad TGF-b1. Note that MS is a common misdiagnosis when it in reality is CIRS.
Mildew is a surface type of mold that won’t damage your home’s structure. But other types of mold cause rot. Probe the suspect area with a screwdriver or other sharp tool (Photo 3). If the wood is soft or crumbles, the fungi have taken hold and rot has begun. We’ll show you how to remove mold from wood in a few steps.
Consider replacing absorbent materials. Removing mold from absorbent materials can be extremely difficult. Instead, most professionals will recommend that you remove and replace such items, since it probably won’t be possible to remove the mold without damaging the material or causing further problems.
Indoor mold may be unsightly and smelly, but the potential problems are more serious than that. By definition, actively-growing mold damages the material it lives on, thereby impairing structural integrity. In addition, mold is associated with some untoward health effects in humans, including allergies and infections. (Some health effects attributed to mold may in fact be caused by bacteria, dust mites, etc., found in mold-colonized environments. So-called “toxic mold” has been claimed as the cause of “toxic mold disease”; this syndrome remains undefined and “toxic mold” as a cause remains unproven. “Toxic mold” is also unproven as a cause of the various symptoms associated with “sick building syndrome”.) Mold growth in homes, schools, and businesses should be eliminated for the sake of human health, structural integrity, and quality of life. Cleaning up small amounts of mold can be done by homeowners. Eliminating mold from large areas requires expertise and protection both for the removal specialists and occupants of the affected space.
Mike was really responsive. He came out right away, gave me an estimate soon after, then came out and did the job the next day once I gave him approval. He did a great job too. I’ve already recommended him to other real estate agents that I work with and passed out his business cards to many people.
I have tried everything and I am ready to get rid of this washer. My friend has a WhirlPool Front Load and never has had this problem. The rubber seal on mine is full of black mold and it stinks; can not get it cleaned. I can see the water gets way down past the seal and it gets musty. It is very hard to pull the rubber back and dry it out.
You need to have top-notch ventilation to remove the humidity and moisture from the air.  The lack of humidity creates a poor breeding ground for bacteria and is the easiest way to maintain your mold-free space.
Montelukast. Montelukast (Singulair) is a tablet taken to block the action of leukotrienes — immune system chemicals that cause allergy symptoms such as excess mucus. It has proved effective in treating allergic asthma, and it’s also effective in treating mold allergy.

The toilet flange is the piece of plumbing that connects the toilet to the sewer. They all have open slots where the toilet bolts go and holes where the flange is screwed to the floor. These openings expose the bathroom sub floor which is food for mold to the inherent moisture that is always there.
