http://grazynaauguscik.com/library/road-tripping-a-parents-guide-to-planning-and-surviving-the-annual-car-trip Toxic black mold mycotoxins that are in the air can enter a person’s eyes. The mycotoxins are cytotoxic (toxic to cells) and when they come into contact with eye cells they cause inflamed and injured eyes and create vision problems.
Dr. Shoemaker further refined the relevance of ERMI testing to CIRS patients by creating the HERTSMI-2 scoring system. This is a weighted score that takes the relative levels and danger of particular mold species into account.
It is possible for mold to be an indoor air contaminant, for example in heating ducts or other areas where moisture can accumulate and stagnate. Any number of other contaminants may be responsible for symptoms, though; a lengthy list ranges from bacteria, to body odors, plumbing exhaust, copy machine fumes, cleaning agents, pesticides, bird droppings, carpeting, and furniture.26
You do not need to rinse the solution away afterwards although you can use a cloth to wipe away the mold and solution after some minutes if you like. The longer grapefruit seed extract is in contact with mold the more it will cut through and kill the mold colony and prevent mold from returning.
In the 1990s, several children in Cleveland, OH, developed pulmonary hemorrhage (bleeding in the lungs). One of those children died. A preliminary study identified exposure to mold, particularly mycotoxins from Stachybotrys chartarum, as a possible cause of these illnesses.23,24 On further review, however, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that the earlier analyses were in error and that the cause remained unknown. CDC also noted that a similar cluster of cases in Chicago was not associated with mold exposure and that pulmonary hemorrhage was not consistent with what is known of exposure to this fungus.25
Surface molds grow in just about any damp location, such as the grout lines of a ceramic tiled shower. They’re easy to scrub away with a mold cleaner mixture of 1/2 cup bleach, 1 qt. water and a little detergent. In mold remediation, the bleach in the cleaning mixture kills the mold, and the detergent helps lift it off the surface so you can rinse it away so it won’t return as fast. You can also buy a mildew cleaner at hardware stores, paint stores and most home centers.
I have mold spots on my bathroom ceiling. We are in the process of redoing some of the paint in there and want to paint the ceiling, but I wanted to kill the mold first. I sprayed straight vinegar on there then left it for about 5 minutes then wiped with a rag, it lightened the spots but did not competely remove them. How long should I be leaving it on? Do I need to be scrubbing hard with a scrubber? Same with the baking soda? How long? Will the spots be completely gone?
Kill mold with clear ammonia. Clear ammonia is an effective tool for killing mold, but it is a toxic cleaning product that should be used sparingly. Use ammonia to kill the toughest mold on glass and tile. It’s not effective on wood and other porous surfaces.
Remember, mold doesn’t have any tricks up its sleeve. It needs very specific things to grow and its movements are predictable. So until mold develops a genetic resistance to bleach, you’re in charge here.
If you have had a flooding problem or a water leak, the water needs to be pumped out immediately and the area should dry completely. Check for roof leaks that may have seeped through into your attic. Remove any items from the floors or walls that are wet and then use fans and a dehumidifier to dry the area. Mold can germinate and grow in as little as 24 hours so be quick and thorough about cleanup.
Diagnosing and treating CIRS is not a “DIY proposition,” as it involves a lot of nuance and complexity that isn’t always apparent to clinicians and patients that are new to the condition. For example, C4a has to be run through Quest Diagnostics and then sent out to a specialized lab called National Jewish Laboratories in order to get an accurate result. I can’t tell you how many times patients have come to me with a C4a result run through Labcorp or another lab. It’s painful to have to tell them that we need to run these (sometimes expensive) labs again because they weren’t done properly in the first place.
As I mentioned in #2, up to 25 percent of the population is susceptible to CIRS and perhaps a majority of buildings are either water-damaged or have conditions that make mold growth possible. Combine these factors with the increase in inflammatory diseases (which can serve as priming events) that has occurred over the past few decades and you have an environment that is ripe for CIRS.
Allergy shots are given to increase your tolerance to allergens that cause allergy symptoms. At the beginning, allergy shots will be administered once or twice a week for several months. The dose is increased each time until a maintenance dose is reached. Side effects of allergy shots include itchy eyes, shortness of breath, runny nose, tight throat, redness, swelling, and irritation.
Also, make sure to properly ventilate your home. It’s especially important to have exhaust fans in your bathrooms and kitchen. Make sure not to carpet your bathroom(s) because this will only increase the trapping of moisture. You should also remove and replace any carpets in your home that have experienced flooding.
I have been diagnosed with BOOP, interstitial lung disease, Mycobacterium abscesses, Aspergillus fumigata, and other lung diseases by an infectious disease doctor and pulmonologist at national Jewish Hospital in Denver Colorado. Throughout the last 25 years I have lived in homes and worked in buildings that have had mold in them. My husband and I purchased a home recently in Hendersonville North Carolina. After the home inspection during which time there was no mold found, I began to have symptoms. I have hired an environmental scientist to do mold inspection/testing. Your article has been very helpful and I will use some of your texts for discussion when he comes back with his results. Do you happen to have a doctor in the Asheville/Hendersonville area? in 2011 they found the above referenced infections/molds. I was in the hospital for 30 days and on IV treatments for three months. Currently, I am on three antibiotics and will be for the rest of my life. I take amoxicillin, minicyclin, chlofasamine. Thank you for your work. Patricia
I believe that the first thing you need to do if you suspect you have mold (of any kind) in your home or place of work, is to get rid of it. In order to know the correct method to remove it so it doesn’t come back and without risking further exposure you will need to get a mold testing specialist. companies like AirMD.com provide nation wide mold testings and other air quality testing. They’ve save my house from mold infestation.
While any of these symptoms in itself may be indicative of many other diseases, experiencing many different symptoms from a number of the categories listed below suggests more strongly the possibility that toxic mold may be involved.
Some mold remediation companies also do restoration work, just like a general contractor. Restoration can often cost far more than the remediation depending on the style of home, building materials used, etc.
I believe that a birth defect that was caused by exposure to mold could have been the result of old technology under the toilet and the pregnant woman would be exposed to it every day of her pregnancy. Every home has them and up till now what is out of sight is out of mind. I am sure there are cases where the moms did not know how they were exposed. I believe I have found the answer.
Borax is commonly used as a deodorizer as well as for cleaning toilets and drains. Borax is also used as an insecticide, herbicide and fungicide and it can be mixed with water in a solution to kill and remove mold as it is a natural mold inhibitor. You can buy borax in supermarkets for a few dollars from the laundry section.
Hi, I lived in orange county and Black toxic mold destroyed my entire life. Even till this day. I only live in the house with major black toxic mold(which all looked perfect because there was new carpet, new everything. But it has brought my life down. and nobody has any clue the amount of money it will take to combat this problem for the rest of my life. I need help. I’m facing the landlord soon in court. n I can not have kids due to this, I lost everything i own. I am also disabled. what do I do???
Air disintegration machines only disintegrate mold spores that can be disintegrated up to 400°. In order to disintegrate tricothecene you need a disintegrator that can disintegrate that particular mycotoxin with a machine that disintegrates molds/mycotoxins above 500°. Do you know of any disintegrator that kills spores above 500°?
The advantage to the ERMI is that it can identify the exact species of various molds present, and it will identify spores that are not airborne. However, it is crucial to understand that not all labs that perform the ERMI test are using the correct methodology.
Nearly everyone will become ill when exposed to sufficient levels of these biotoxins, but most people recover once they are removed from exposure. Their detoxification system is able to recognize the biotoxins in their bodies as toxins and eliminate them via the normal mechanisms.
People pls read all the above and take mold seriously..It can cause major respiratory illnesses as well as allergies including sinuses and skin problems. It can cause long term memory failure as well as reducing your ability to smell and headaches..Once you get rid of it it you will find your health improving .Mold can be found in damp places ,walls, ceilings ,carpet, wood and vents as well as air-conditioning systems .Please take this seriously and wishing you the best of health!!!
I had a walk in closet full of mold, I used borax and a scrub brush to remove it,you could see the crystals it left behind on the shelf inside there. This was for a elderly woman. I liked the fact it emitted no fumes and was easy to administer(spray bottle) and it also got rid of the modly smell.

Drywall, ceiling tiles, carpets, furniture, ductwork, roofing, paneling, wallpaper, under sinks, and the areas around plumbing pipes are examples of areas in the home that can become infested by mold if the ideal growing conditions are present.

here Whether or not your home insurance will cover mold-related damages or mold eradication procedures depends on your policy and the factors contributing to the mold’s growth. Most mold growth is caused by water leakage or poor ventilation and unfortunately, many homeowners policies do not cover all kinds of water damage.
The EPA considers bacteria, molds, mildew, viruses, animal dander, cat saliva, house dust, mites, cockroaches and pollen all biological contaminants. Excessive moisture creates breeding grounds for these contaminants, so ventilate adequately and keep relative humidity between 30 percent and 50 percent to prevent condensation on building materials.

Thank you Chris for all your great articles! I just have one question: Under bioxin’s found in water damaged buildings you mentioned Beta-glucan. My understanding of beta glucan is found in mushrooms which works as a immune modulator and is suppose to be good for our health. Does this mean anyone suffering from toxic mold issues should not consume mushrooms and/or mushroom supplements?
Toxic black mold mycotoxins can be breathed in, ingested, or absorbed through a person’s skin or eyes. Eventually the mycotoxins then find their way into the person’s blood. This leads to heart damage, problems with blood clotting and internal or external hemorrhaging.
Nasal lavage. To help with irritating nasal symptoms, your doctor may recommend that you rinse your nose daily with salt water. Use a specially designed squeeze bottle, such as the one included in saline kits (Sinus Rinse, others), bulb syringe or neti pot to irrigate your nasal passages. This home remedy, called nasal lavage, can help keep your nose free of irritants.
Memnoniella echinata : also know as Stachybotrys echinata * This particular species has been often found on cottons, linens, wool and canvas items. This mold does produce many of the same toxins produced by Stachybotrys chartarum and is therefore considered to be potentially dangerous to humans and indoor air quality.
P. polycephalum is not only a great navigator and good forward thinker, so to speak—it is also a healthy eater. Slime molds survive best on a diet comprising two thirds protein and one third carbohydrates. Audrey Dussutour of the University of Paul Sabatier in France placed slime molds in the center of a clock face of 11 different pieces of food, each with a unique ratio of proteins and carbohydrates. When presented with this circular menu, slime molds consistently glommed onto the piece of food with optimal balance of nutrients.
Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as Stachybotrys atra, Stachybotrys alternans or Stilbospora chartarum) * This mold, aka “black mold” to the general public lives its life surviving off of dead materials that are rich in cellulose.

Mold is happiest and grows best where conditions are warm and damp, so basements and showers are high-risk growth areas. Check out the CDC’s list of basic facts about molds here for more details.
Spending time in damp and moldy buildings seems to increase the risk of bronchitis and respiratory infections, but is not proven to do so. If it is a cause of these infections, bacteria or chemical emissions are likely to be responsible.10
Abnormalities documented by visual contrast sensitivity (VCS) testing. VCS testing measures your ability to see details at low contrast levels. Dr. Shoemaker and Dr. Ken Hudnell—a principal investigator for the U.S. EPA’s National Health and Environmental Effects Research Lab and an expert on how neurotoxins affect the physiology of vision—discovered that the biotoxins affect the optical nerve and decrease the ability to detect visual contrast.
To date, a possible association between acute idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage among infants and Stachybotrys chartarum (Stachybotrys atra) has not been proved. Further studies are needed to determine what causes acute idiopathic hemorrhage.
Schmidt is the director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (a.k.a. GISS) a world-class climate-science facility. One day last year, I came to GISS with a far-out proposal. In my work as an astrophysicist, I’d begun researching global warming from an “astrobiological perspective.” That meant asking whether any industrial civilization that rises on any planet will, through their own activity, trigger their own version of a climate shift. I was visiting GISS that day hoping to gain some climate science insights and, perhaps, collaborators. That’s how I ended up in Gavin’s office.
I picked up the tip when initially researching how to clean toxins from vegetables naturally; and, learned along the way the many other benefits that Grapefruit Seed Extract offers. BTW, it can also be used to help keep your hot tub and Jacuzzi disinfected!
Ask if there are any pre-appointment restrictions when making your appointment. For example, if you’re having allergy tests, your doctor will likely want you to stop taking allergy medications for several days before the test.
At the moment, I am recommending that patients only have the AO devices on at night or when they are not in the room, and turn them off when they’re in the room. Also, I recommend using a carbon-based filter in the same room that the AO devices are in.
Try taking 10 capsules of a good activated charcoal. It worked for me within hours my ice pick like leg pain was gone. And it does not constipate me. I also use a good bentonite clay but I take that with the charcoal I do get constipated but it too is worth you trying it as it too should help you.
Often CIRS is part of the picture but not the whole picture, in our experience. Unfortunately mold is not always visible, so the fact that you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Starting with an ERMI test from Mycometrics is typically what we recommend. It can’t rule in/out mold with 100% certainty, but it’s a good initial screen.
Under his administration, the funding of science to better understand the health consequences of mold exposure stands to be slashed. Meanwhile, the significance of mold in human lives is expected to increase with rising sea levels and catastrophic weather events. The perennial intensification of severe weather patterns over the Gulf Coast has made flooding increasingly common, at least partly due to the warming of the ocean.
Whether it’s the slimy black spots on your shower curtain, the fuzzy white patches on your basement floor, or the slick orange film that forms on your kitchen drain, household mold is more than unsightly. In some cases, mold in your home can make you sick, especially if you have allergies or asthma.
But, testing does have its advantages, one being a sense of closure. Testing gives you confidence that this is really what you are dealing with and psychologically this can be a huge help for the patient as well as family members struggling to believe that their loved one is not crazy.
Lyme can cause CIRS and CIRS can be misdiagnosed as Lyme, its complicated. Go read Dr. Shoemakers work e.g. the book Surviving Mold and the web site e.g. http://www.survivingmold.com/store1/presentations/rise-of-the-innates-lyme-in-2006-lessons-from-a-billion-years-ago
Grapefruit seed extract kills mold naturally as the citric acid from the grapefruit attacks mold. Grapefruit seed extract also disinfects areas and deodorizes as well. Like tea tree oil, a small amount of grapefruit seed extract goes a long way in killing mold.
Few molds can begin growing at temperatures of 4 °C (39 °F) or below, so food is typically refrigerated at this temperature. When conditions do not enable growth to take place, molds may remain alive in a dormant state depending on the species, within a large range of temperatures. The many different mold species vary enormously in their tolerance to temperature and humidity extremes. Certain molds can survive harsh conditions such as the snow-covered soils of Antarctica, refrigeration, highly acidic solvents, anti-bacterial soap and even petroleum products such as jet fuel.[8]:22
The highly publicized “toxic mold”—meaning the varieties that send mycotoxins into the air, the inhaling of which can acutely sicken anyone—causes most concern right after a flood. In the wake of Hurricane Matthew in South Carolina last year, sludge stood feet deep in homes for days. As it receded, toxic black mold grew. In one small community, Nichols, it was more the mold than the water itself that left the town’s 261 homes uninhabitable for months.
Be vigilant about signs of mold regrowth: mildew odors, any increased allergy symptoms, stains on walls or places where paint is cracking or peeling, loose drywall tape and black growth on bathroom tiles or grout. If you see these signs look for mold and remove it immediately.
This would apply to small black mold killing projects only – larger jobs may require that negative pressure is put in place to keep mold spores from becoming aerosolized in your home (more on this later).

The surface of this beautiful patio was finished in soy concrete stain. Made with eco-friendly, rapidly renewable materials, soy stain is acid-free and contains no hazardous materials. It’s also great for indoor use.
So, if the above is not true, and one is in a minority of having mold susceptible genes, that is something that one really needs to be careful of and treat. If it turns out that nearly 90% of the folks in this country have the same genes, then you really have the same issues to treat, but that having unfortunate genetics isn’t one of them.
If you find mold in your home which looks like toxic black mold you should have it professionally tested to be certain. It’s important that you determine whether it’s mycotoxin-producing toxic black mold or a non-toxic species of mold. Once you know for sure then you can plan how to remove it.
Or maybe, you have a rain exposed deck like mine that does not get enough sunlight due to tree cover.  And, if I do not get the leaves removed quickly, I will have mold growing on my wooden deck in short order.
But I recently discovered that Life Extension offers this same panel of blood tests at a discount rate. This blood test panel also takes out the hassle of trying to get the tests done right and you don’t need a doctor to order it. But you may need a doctor to interpret it.
Navigating a maze is a pretty impressive feat for a slime mold, but the protist is in fact capable of solving more complex spatial problems: Inside laboratories slime molds have effectively re-created Tokyo’s railway network in miniature as well as the highways of Canada, the U.K. and Spain. When researchers placed oat flakes or other bits of food in the same positions as big cities and urban areas, slime molds first engulfed the entirety of the edible maps. Within a matter of days, however, the protists thinned themselves away, leaving behind interconnected branches of slime that linked the pieces of food in almost exactly the same way that man-made roads and rail lines connect major hubs in Tokyo, Europe and Canada.
Set out dehumidifiers and new fans to dry the now-cleaned areas for at least three days, then check them (by sight and smell) for mold. If you discover more mold, clean again with bleach for mold remediation.
Your report of restoring books by storing them for several months in baking soda and/or activated charcoal is very interesting . I read elsewhere that charcoal filters in an air purifier can remove mold mycotoxins . If books can be restored in that way , then perhaps clothes and shoes with no visible mould could also be restored . Are you referring to stachy , black aspergillus mold mycotoxins , or less harmful ones ? Were your books exposed to stachy ? Where did you dreive your info from about this method ? I have a black mould problem in a 1 1/2 mete area of one wall , not in the bedroom , but as I am on a pension , with few assets , and neither my clothes nor my shoes smell of mold , and I realise I will need to ditch my mattress , bed , furnishings , cushions , washing machine , portable air conditioner , two air purifiers , and blender , juicer , stereo , computer , radio , etc., I am loathe to also ditch all my apparel and bags , bedding , blankets , etc . I am aware of the washing protocol of washing 3 times with borax, vinegar and epsom salts, each separately , and the storage solution would be an extra remedial measure . Any info would be appreciated , also any ways that the machines with motors could possibly be saved .
Have a heating and cooling contractor check your heating and cooling system to make sure it’s sized and operating properly to remove humidity. If your system is too big or the airflow is incorrect, your air conditioner will not remove humidity like it should. Also, ask the contractor to check your duct system for air leaks, and proper size and air flow to each room.
Scrub the surface mold stains from walls and wood trim with a mixture of 1 qt. water and 1/2 cup bleach mold cleaner to kill the mold. Use a soft brush and work until signs of the mold disappear. After scrubbing the surfaces, simply allow the bleach solution to continue to penetrate the surfaces and dry.
Molds can also cause asthma attacks in people with asthma who are allergic to mold. In addition, mold exposure can irritate the eyes, skin, nose, throat and lungs of both mold-allergic and non-allergic people.
The fourth step is to use both natural supplements and pharmaceutical medications to remove the mold toxins from your body.  Since these toxins are the main cause of this syndrome, effective treatment is geared toward removal of these toxins. These remedies can be found on the BLACK MOLD DETOX webpage!
Molds are fungi. Homes and structures often provide many opportunities for mold spores to grow, even in the absence of frank water leaks: seepage through foundation walls and cellar floors, dehumidifiers and air conditioners, window condensation, defective plumbing, damp bathrooms, air filters, and potted plants.4 Different types of mold spores thrive on different surfaces; for example, the “yellow slime” found on hardwood mulch won’t be found growing in a tiled bath enclosure.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organization that sets standards for responsible management of the world’s forests. These shelves and cabinet were made from FSC-certified oak plywood with a soy-based adhesive.
You can easily spot the most visible type of mold, called mildew, which begins as tiny, usually black spots but often grows into larger colonies. It’s the black stuff you see in the grout lines in your shower, on damp walls, and outdoors on the surfaces of deck boards and painted siding, especially in damp and shady areas. A mildewed surface is often difficult to distinguish from a dirty one. To test for mildew, simply dab a few drops of household bleach on the blackened area. If it lightens after one to two minutes, you have mildew. If the area remains dark, you probably have dirt.
The best treatment for any allergy is to take steps to avoid exposure to your triggers. However, molds are common, and you can’t completely avoid them. While there’s no sure way to cure allergic rhinitis caused by a mold allergy, a number of medications can ease your symptoms. These include:
No one knows exactly how many homes have mold behind the walls, but the best current estimate is about 70 percent, according to Ronald E. Gots, M.D., Ph.D., of the International Center for Toxicology and Medicine. The EPA and World Health Organization state that some molds have the potential to cause health problems, particularly allergic reactions and asthma, in people who are susceptible.
Do not rinse the area with water, since the tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extracts are mold-fighting agents that help prevent mold’s return. Instead, shake the bottle of solution, give the mold-infested area a final light spray, and then allow it to air-dry.
What is the best way for regular maintenance cleaning of my shower? I have CIRS and chemical sensitivities. Can I use a scrub brush and my essential oils to scrub the floor and walls of my shower? I can see that some mold is starting to form so I’m not sure if it’s safe for me to clean it. If someone else cleans it for me, can they use bleach or strong cleansers to kill the mold/mildew? The leftover odor will likely bother me, but the mold might bother me more. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
It does have a distinct smell but don’t worry, the smell will dissipate over time. Since it has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, aside from killing all types of mold, tea tree oil can be useful for treating lice, dandruff, athlete’s foot, and many other conditions. It is a good idea to buy a small bottle and keep in your house. Remember, a little goes a long way.
When Mrs Clean is not busy managing her house cleaning company or running her kids back and forth to their events, she enjoys experimenting with natural and non-toxic cleaners and learning new techniques to remove stains.
That’s partly why the barrage of warnings senators and representatives are sending to President Trump, in defense of Special Counsel Robert Mueller, can inspire only modest confidence. To fire Mueller would be “political suicide,” they’ve warned. It would be “a disaster” and he should be allowed to “do his job,” according to others. But for all the polite warnings, only a handful of bipartisan senators and representatives are trying to prevent a new Saturday Night Massacre legislatively. For now, the main defense of the rule of law remains an implied red line.
Thanks for the tip to use ice pellets or sand to blast away mold from your basement walls! You also said that tea tree is a natural fungicide that is effective at killing black mold spores. I think it’s important to choose a mold and mildew service that tells you why you have mold in your home so that you can prevent it from happening again later on.
Remember, mold doesn’t have any tricks up its sleeve. It needs very specific things to grow and its movements are predictable. So until mold develops a genetic resistance to bleach, you’re in charge here.
The use of ‘rubber’ around the home should be reviewed. Rubber is used around the seals on my dishwasher, but it may be the mold is there, but we can’t see it because it is black. Or it may be the ‘drying’ gets rid of water, so it’s not an issue.

Kill mold with bleach. This is an effective method for getting rid of black mold on nonporous surfaces like tile and glass, as long as you aren’t concerned that they’ll get damaged. Since bleach produces toxic fumes, you’ll want to make sure the area is well ventilated. Open the windows and wear gloves to protect your hands. Here’s what to do:
Discard any items that are porous or if you are unable to completely remove the mold from them. It’s also a very smart idea to get rid of any carpets that have been flooded because they’re very prone to mold. Never paint or caulk over moldy surfaces.
POWER PLANT: If you look closely at the inner pink lobes of the Venus flytrap’s (Dionaea muscipula) trap, you will see several hairs. The trap shuts when an insect touches two or more of these hairs – or the same hair more than once – within a 30-second window. Tripping the hairs triggers an electrical impulse that propagates through the carnivorous plant’s modified leaves, opening pores in cells walls so that water rushes in and snaps the trap shut. Scientists can also force the trap to close by applying an electric current to its lobes. Tristan Gillingwater, Wikimedia Commons

In small amounts, mold spores are usually harmless, but when they land on a damp spot in your home, they can start to grow. When mold is growing on a surface, spores can be released into the air where they can be easily inhaled. If you’re sensitive to mold and inhale a large number of spores, you could experience health problems.

Joy asked: How do I remove mould from the rubber seal on a front loader washing machine door? This mould has built up over time in the fold in the rubber seal on the door. I now dry the water from the fold after each wash, but still have a build-up of black mould spots. The machine and laundry have an odor from the mould.
I dealt with an awful black mold experience in an old apartment. I had no clue what was making me so sick for so long. Doctors kept implying nothing was wrong with me. I even had a pulmonologist tell me what I really need was a psychiatrist.
The article was very helpful and informative. I was exposed to toxic mold in workplace. I have severe childhood/adulthood allergies to penicillin and mold spore antibiotics that almost killed me as a child. They moved us to a musty mold infested building and i took ill immediately as did others but not to my extreme of passing out, flu like symptoms. The first complete test on bldg revealed mold but after bleach bombing they retested the air in one area of building and cleared the bldg to be reopened. Meanwhile, people are still working in that building and and getting ill with headaches and clients are still being seen even after i reported bldg to proper authorities. I have been diagnosed with lupus, fibromyalgia, arthropathy, as well as newly diagnosed asthma. I suffer from extreme joint and muscle pain my ANA and blood panels are extremely high for inflamation. I no longer work there but the damage is done to my health.
Molds are part of the natural environment, and can be found everywhere, indoors and outdoors. Mold is not usually a problem, unless it begins growing indoors. The best way to control mold growth is to control moisture. This website provides guidance about mold and moisture for homes, schools, multifamily and commercial buildings. Molds can have a big impact on indoor air quality.

Steve, you are not crazy..its all real what’s happening to all of you. I had a minor area of damage July 25, 2012 and became sick with asthma in 2days then within 2 wks it was crushing, burning pressure in my bladder with frequent urination and extreme thirst. Then anxiety and then 8mths later in March i overnight became severely depressed out of the blue. Then mood swings and rage issues and all the other problems continued. Then anorexia which i still have every so often where i cant eat for a wk at a time bc i feel so bloated and full…it passes and comes back again. Then blurry vision and the eye dr said i should be seeing ok but i couldnt and still cant. My cats started losing their hair a bit and 2 of them became asthmatic and they all (11) started throwing up thier food at every meal all around the house and still do. I had surgeries on my bladder that I didn’t need bc it has turned out to be IC which is interstitial cystitis which is what was and does if i eat the wrong thing what causes my bladder pain WHICH I HEALED MY SELF bc the drs are uninformed and were urging me crazy with over active bladder meds which did not work at all…none of them. Then they all were saying i needed anti depressants bc if they cant find the cause then of course it must be in your head…right? No! Thats not it at all. I was finally diagnosed this past Feb when i ended up in a recently rained dr in the Shoemaker protocol as in Dr Shoemaker and his website is called “surviving mold.com” and it has a lot of info which is very helpful. Many Drs and others do not believe that we are sick with this life changing illness but we all are and you need to know its a up hill battle you and all of us have to fight to get well and to be believed. There ar some very good books that i found very helpful to explain all of this. I was told in Feb by my dr to move out ASAP and to leave everything behind. If i take anything ill just contaminate the new place so ive been trying to get the money together to do that….but its very hard while you’re suffering and fighting the none believers and have no energy to do it..or anything some days. I had i one of my cats urine tested for the mycotoxins and it came back for gliotoxins which are shed by yeast. I lost 3 cats to cancer since the pipe burst and the company sent out allowed the mold to grow trying to cut corners and now im losing everything and no one will take responsibility for it which is maddening and completely wrong but its the way it is. I hope you get some answers but please do not give up..there is hope and there are people to help guide and give advice but it takes time. YOU ARE NOT IMAGINING IT, IT IS REAL!
Kill mold with borax. Borax is an inexpensive product you can buy in the laundry aisle at most supermarkets. It works on nonporous surfaces such as tile and glass and also on wood and other porous surfaces (as long as they won’t be damaged by excessive moisture). Start by vacuuming up any lose mold with a HEPA filtered vacuum so the spores don’t get spread throughout the room. Next, clean up the mold by following these steps:

Hi. I have a brand new Hotpoint and it is also having mould around the rubber. I have used mould killer, which has removed it, but it has come back so I thought I was doing something wrong, but after reading your comments, I see it’s a common fault and needs looking at from the manufacturer.

Order Tramadol 180 Cod Reality: Not so, says the U.S. Department of Energy: “Vapor barriers only retard moisture due to diffusion, while most moisture enters walls either through fluid capillary action or as water vapor through air leaks.” There is a lot of confusion among homeowners and contractors about vapor barriers (a layer with a permeability rating of 0.1 perm or less) and vapor retarders (a layer with permeability greater than 0.1 perm but less than or equal to 1 perm). Both slow the transmission of vapor through a building assembly, but their effectiveness depends a lot on your climate zone. The prime consideration for homeowners is the structure’s ability to dry out, which leads many experts to question whether vapor barriers are necessary at all.
Another set of experiments suggests that slime molds navigate time as well as space, using a rudimentary internal clock to anticipate and prepare for future changes in their environments. Tetsu Saigusa of Hokkaido University and his colleagues—including Nakagaki—placed a polycephalum in a kind of groove in an agar plate stored in a warm and moist environment (slime molds thrive in high humidity). The slime mold crawled along the groove. Every 30 minutes, however, the scientists suddenly dropped the temperature and decreased the humidity, subjecting the polycephalum to unfavorably dry conditions. The slime mold instinctively began to crawl more slowly, saving its energy. After a few trials, Saigusa and his colleagues stopped changing the slime mold’s environment, but every 30 minutes the amoeba’s pace slowed anyway. Eventually it stopped slowing down spontaneously. Slime molds did the same thing at intervals of 60 and 90 minutes, although, on average, only about half of the slime molds tested showed spontaneous slowing in the absence of an environmental change.
Dr. Neil Nathan also shared some of the symptoms that he has found to be specifically associated with mold-related illness in his patient base of relatively severely affected chronic illness sufferers.
I am not sure that antibody test shows anything with regards to CIRS as CIRS is not an allergic reaction. I would get the blood work recommended by Dr Shoemaker done (see http://www.survivingmold.com/diagnosis/lab-orders), most importantly HLA-DR to see your genetics, MSH, C4a ad TGF-b1. Note that MS is a common misdiagnosis when it in reality is CIRS.
When mold spores drop on places where there is excessive moisture, such as where leakage may have occurred in roofs, pipes, walls, plant pots, or where there has been flooding, they will grow. Many building materials provide suitable nutrients that encourage mold to grow. Wet cellulose materials, including paper and paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, wood, and wood products, are particularly conducive for the growth of some molds. Other materials such as dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation materials, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery, commonly support mold growth.
A common-sense approach should be used for any mold contamination existing inside buildings and homes. The common health concerns from molds include hay fever-like allergic symptoms. Certain individuals with chronic respiratory disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, asthma) may experience difficulty breathing. Individuals with immune suppression may be at increased risk for infection from molds. If you or your family members have these conditions, a qualified medical clinician should be consulted for diagnosis and treatment. For the most part, one should take routine measures to prevent mold growth in the home.
Blood test. A blood test, sometimes called the radioallergosorbent test, can measure your immune system’s response to mold by measuring the amount of certain antibodies in your bloodstream known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. A blood sample is sent to a medical laboratory, where it can be tested for evidence of sensitivity to specific types of mold.
Pets are also affected by black mold. If you have black mold, look out for these symptoms in your pet: lethargy, rashes, nosebleeds, runny nose or nosebleeds and joint pain. Take your pet to see a veterinarian if you think it is experiencing problems from black mold.
Liesle please go to survivingmold.com and look at the physician list. Start with Dr. Ackerly she can do a phone consult. You will need a local doctor to order blood labs. You cant be treated unless you are in a safe environment. Leave your stuff and get somewhere safe so you can start to heal.
Many mold inspectors are not using comprehensive, accurate testing methods. If you call up a local mold inspector and ask him to come assess your property, chances are he will do a visual inspection and take some air samples. Both of these methods can yield useful information, but on their own, they are not enough.
It’s impossible to get rid of all mold and mold spores in your home, but because mold spores can’t grow without moisture, reducing moisture in your home is the best way to prevent or eliminate mold growth. If there is already mold growing in your home, it’s important to clean up the mold and fix the problem causing dampness. If you clean up the mold but don’t fix the problem, the mold will most likely return.
History, signs, and symptoms consistent with biotoxin exposure. In cases of mold toxicity, history should include exposure to toxin-producing molds as documented by the EPA-approved ERMI test (more on this in point #4 below). In other cases (microcystin, ciguatera, etc.), history should include likely exposure or laboratory evidence of exposure.
Killing Black Mold with Ammonia has its advantages. It’s a good disinfectant and does a pretty good job of killing mold on hard, non-porous items. These items would include the bathroom sink, shower doors or kitchen counters.
I wish you good luck with this. I pray a lot and I truly believe God brought me to this specialist. The sad part is that many general practitioners and internists don’t know anything about this and don’t care. They just want to put you on pain killers, anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-depressants.
Sometimes it is necessary to have your HVAC air ducts professionally cleaned since air ducts can collect dust and mold spores. For more information about duct cleaning, please refer to the EPA Publication ”Should You Have The Air Ducts In Your Home Cleaned?”
Step 5: Every hour or so, for the next day, thoroughly spray the paper towels to the point where you can see a little water running down. Wear your gloves while spraying as the 5% solution can stain your skin and cause pain as well.
Complete the initial cleanup by vacuuming up the debris. Thoroughly clean the wet/dry vac afterward by disposing of the filter and washing out the tank, hose and attachments with the bleach-and-water solution.
Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as Stachybotrys atra, Stachybotrys alternans or Stilbospora chartarum) * This mold, aka “black mold” to the general public lives its life surviving off of dead materials that are rich in cellulose.
– THIEVES OIL has been tested (a lot) and does the job, testing by environmental expert Dr Ed Close and others. There are many companies that make it, and some charge a bucket load of cash, whereas others do not. There is no reason to pay $70 for 30ml (unless your last name is Gates). so just shop around and check to see that all the ingredients are there and nothing BAD has been added.
Experts suspect that toxic black mold can cause cancer, although there still needs to be more research. Some other toxic molds, like Aspergillus for example, definitely cause cancer though. The aflatoxin mycotoxins which Aspergillus produce are among the most powerful carcinogens.
1) Are you seeing a connection of the CIRS lab values and HLA mutations to other issues such as heavy metal toxicity? 2) If CIRS labs are out of range with HLA gene mutation and had a long-term past WDB exposure, can you recover without protocol over time? Will the labs remain out of range without treatment?
I had five days of lying in a hospital bed, connecting the dots of my progressive illness. When it started, what I was doing when my lips would swell. I figured it out! I was a waitress and bartender at Henry Ford’s Dearborn Country Club. It was a very old building with a shale roof. The roof leaked real bad in certain areas. Water would drip from the ceiling in the kitchen. Water was running down the wall. When I tended bar, I was standing in front of a wet floor due to the ice been. On top of working in a moldy environment, I worked in my garden all day before work. I had a beautiful yard on 3/4 of an acre with cedar mulched beds. I had a twelve foot compost bin that I put leaves and grass clippings in. I was always digging in mulch and exposed to mold! The mulch surrounded my home. It was under all my windows. When I ended up in the hospital, I had been spreading mulch for weeks. Bagged mulch that sat over the winter because I got so sick the previous summer before completing the task.
Luckily, I’ve been able to pinpoint the sources! I wasn’t able to purchase new furniture due to the expense of a major move. I have a faux or leather recliner, micro- fiber couch, solid wood dresser and bookshelf, that are painted(all from the previous dwelling. At this time I don’t have a choice but to keep them. Though I cleaned clothing in hot water and got rid of household items that were effected, I was hoping you would give your thoughts/ recommendations..? Can I use any of the natural remedies on the upholstery? Wondering if I put one or a combo of the essential oils you speak of, in my hand held steamer or steam cleaner, that I can save our health (including our sm dog, who now has respiratory and rash issues) and my furnishings? Thank you for taking the time to read my fears. Desperately and Sincerely…
Wash at the hottest temperature possible with Persil Powercaps – Hot water has the best chance of killing mould spores, but follow the care label’s instructions for the safest temperature to wash your garment. The Triple Action formula in Persil Powercaps gives you stain removal, freshness, and clothing care in one handy capsule – perfect for tackling mould stains and getting rid of that ‘damp’ smell on your clothes. Just pop one or two capsules in the washing machine drum (check your pack for dosage tips) before adding your clothes.

Seal off the moldy room. This will contain the black mold spores so that they do not travel through the air into different areas of the house. Shut doors tightly and use plastic and tape to cover vents, doorways and any areas where air can escape.
I want to note that according to the CDC, the term “toxic mold” is not accurate. However, it does admit that molds (like black mold) can produce toxins (specifically mycotoxins) that are toxic or poisonous. So maybe we should call it toxin-producing black mold.
The first step in the protocol is removing the patient from exposure to the biotoxins. This involves testing all environments (home, workplace, recreational) that the patient spends significant amounts of time in throughout the course of his or her daily life. If mold or other biotoxins are identified, those environments must be successfully remediated (followed by taking adequate measures to prevent recurrence), or the patient must relocate to another home or workplace.
mold has to be removed from any porous material. it cannot be killed. you are only removing the stain. it will come back. wood, drywall, paint, fabric.. All mentioned above will clean mold off hard surfaces. metal, gkass, tile, formica ,.non porous
I think rubber should be banned from the home. On my razor handle, they use rubber; it now has mold. Modern shower heads use rubber in the holes. I wanted to buy a new blender; I noticed with glass blenders, they tend to have rubber. I suspect in many places, the rubber is often black.
I live in an apartment which is section 8. I have informed my office of all of my issues here in my apartment . I know without a doubt I’m a hundred percent sure that my home is full of toxic mold. Over all the years I’ve lived here my health has completely went downhill and I truly believe I am slowly dying . I have done so much research on this but no one wants to believe me and no one wants to help me . I am disabled and I have nowhere else to live . I have every single symptom you had mentioned and my home which I have thoroughly photographed is completely falling to pieces and there is mold everywhere . What can I do I have nowhere to go and no way to turn ? Can anyone help me ?
A link between other adverse health effects, such as acute idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage among infants, memory loss, or lethargy, and molds, including the mold Stachybotrys chartarum (Stachybotrys atra), has not been proven. Further studies are needed to find out what causes acute idiopathic hemorrhage and other adverse health effects.
Consider replacing absorbent materials. Removing mold from absorbent materials can be extremely difficult. Instead, most professionals will recommend that you remove and replace such items, since it probably won’t be possible to remove the mold without damaging the material or causing further problems.
The MELISA (Memory Lymphocyte Immunostimulation Assay) test is one such test. The MELISA test can detect allergies to chemicals, toxins, and mold, including toxic molds such as Aspergillus and Penicillium.
Borax – This water-soluble mineral is also a natural mould-killer, which you can buy as a detergent or in powder form. If you get it as a powder, mix half a cup of borax thoroughly with hot water according to instructions. Then add the solution directly into the drum of your washing machine, and launder the clothes as normal.
If you already see mold, you usually do NOT need to spend money on pretesting as we discuss here: Mold Inspections and Mold Testing. Plain and simple: You need to remove it. All mold must be removed and done so in the same way (as described in the next bullet point), regardless of the type of molds identified from testing. If a so-called mold professional insists that you need to spend hundreds of dollars on pre testing when mold is already visible, our advice is to be very wary because its simply a waste of money except in the rarest of circumstances.
It is not always a good idea to use a fast drying fan to attempt drying out a mold contaminated area (such as carpet, drywall and so on). It is best to remove all contaminated items first (to include cutting out affected drywall) and then dispose of properly.
Thanks for getting the word out on the critical topic that even many functional medicine doctors remain unaware of. I recently wrote an article about the toxic effects of mold after finding mold in my office (http://www.jillcarnahan.com/2015/02/08/toxic-mold-exposure-cause-symptoms/) So important we educate our patients and other docs, too!
I did a Bio Trek mycotoxin panel which is collected through urine. All parameters came back positive. Aflatoxin, Ochratoxin A and Trichothecene. I do have the multisuseptible gene and another mold gene. If I’m out of a moldy environment would you say I just haven’t detoxed these molds? What are your views on this panel?
I had many of these less common symptoms of black mold poisoning. That made it very difficult for me to believe that my symptoms were actually that of black mold poisoning, even though I knew I had been exposed to high levels of stachybotrys and chaetomium.
I found that vinegar is also good and it is less expensive. It is antimicrobial and will kill mold. If you’re not a fan of the smell you can add some essential oils to it to leave a more pleasing scent. Studies have found that vinegar (straight 5%) kills 82 percent of mold. When you finish with baking soda this is a great way to make sure you’ll get all the mold.

If you use the recommended ratio of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water, then there should be no need for an additional rinsing of the drywall. Keep the area well-ventilated and have a fan on the cleaned area. It will dry without issue. However, using a stain-blocking primer prior to repainting is highly recommended.

mould and health problems | mold in water

Joy asked: How do I remove mould from the rubber seal on a front loader washing machine door? This mould has built up over time in the fold in the rubber seal on the door. I now dry the water from the fold after each wash, but still have a build-up of black mould spots. The machine and laundry have an odor from the mould.
Wear personal protective equipment. Mold exposure can cause upper respiratory illness, and the cleaners you use to kill the mold may also be damaging and corrosive. To protect yourself while you’re cleaning, consider wearing protective gear, including:[4]
Black mold exposure and black mold poisoning can cause a wide range of health problems. Some black mold symptoms can actually be really serious. You may have found this article from googling “black mold in shower” or “mold in house.” Unfortunately, mold problems are not unusual in the home, and the shower is a classic location to find black mold flourishing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, molds in general are very common in homes and buildings and they can grow anywhere indoors where there is moisture. (1)
If you need mold coverage and don’t have it, there may be other options. Some policies, for instance, offer “buy-back” endorsements for mold claims which let you pay more money in exchange for some limited mold coverage. Other policies simply cap the amount of mold coverage or pay only for certain things such as cleanup or testing. So whether you’re buying a new home or switching policies, just be aware: it is far more difficult to find a mold damage inclusive policy for a home that has a history of mold.
According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, the chimneys and connector pipes that serve oil and gas furnaces are subject to weathering, animal invasions, deterioration/rust-out and the accumulation of nest materials and debris. As a safeguard, have fuel-burning furnaces, stoves and fireplaces — as well as their connections and exhaust vents — inspected and serviced before each heating season. And never idle your car in the garage.
I would have the landlord contact a professional company to conduct an air test to see what kind of mold spores are in the apartment. That would be the best way to prove it has Toxic Mold. I lived in an apartment with Toxic Mold and my health went downhill. If the test comes back positive, I would move right away.
Yes, people are indeed sickened and stay sickened by exposure to Water Damaged Buildings (WDB). There have been lots of names for the illness over the years, including “Mold illness.” The best discussion of the academic basis for this illness is found in the Expert Treating Physicians Consensus report published 7/2010 (available on this site). Let start with some basic ideas: this illness is not an allergy. It is an inflammation within the body which is caused by an immune system that has gone haywire. The term “mold illness” is a subcategory of biotoxin illness called Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS). The proper definition of CIRS is:
In most cases mold can be removed from hard surfaces by a thorough cleaning with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Absorbent or porous materials like ceiling tiles, drywall, and carpet may have to be thrown away if they become moldy. If you have an extensive amount of mold and you do not think you can manage the cleanup on your own, you may want to contact a professional who has experience in cleaning mold in buildings and homes. It is important to properly clean and dry the area as you can still have an allergic reaction to parts of the dead mold and mold contamination may recur if there is still a source of moisture.
Regarding the methods for cleaning the air in the home, there are some resources out there that claim that certain plants can help clean the air (e.g. http://complete-health-and-happiness.com/houseplants-clean-air-basically-impossible-kill/?t=DM)
Get a picture of it and take it to your local board of health and have them investigate it. They’ll let your landlord know if it’s black mold or not. If it is black mold, he may have to pay to get it fixed.
Pry off baseboards and trim from contaminated areas with a pry bar and block of wood. Probe heavily stained or moisture-swollen walls using a screwdriver to discover and open up moisture damage and hidden mold in the insulation and wall framing.
Virtually everyone we’ve tested in our practice has a susceptible HLA haplotype, which would mean most patients that test positive for heavy metal toxicity have susceptible haplotypes. But that association could be purely due to chance; more formal research would have to be done to establish a true correlation.
It is an eye test that can be taken via computer, gauging the ability of the individual to see clearly even in situations of low visual contrast (a skill that tends to be impaired in those suffering from this kind of illness).
People living in homes with toxic black mold are exposed mainly through breathing in toxic black mold spores and mycotoxins. Toxic black mold mycotoxins create irritation and a burning feeling in a person’s air passages such as the nasal cavity, mouth and throat.
Combine and mix 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract oil to each cup of water used. Or 1 drop of oil per tablespoon of water for a baseline ratio (you can strengthen the ratio for more stubborn mold stains).

What We Do

“Lighting is also a big factor in falls,” says Meri-K Appy, president of Safe Kids USA, who recommends having lights at the top and the bottom of stairs. Also, don’t delay repairing loose treads and rails.
MSH is a potent anti-inflammatory compound. Reduced MSH is at the heart of the “Biotoxic pathway” with many negative downstream effects. VIP plays a similar role to MSH in regulating inflammatory response. Symptoms may include sleep disturbances, chronic pain, leaky gut syndrome, shortness of breath during exercise, hormone abnormalities and mood swings.
Nasal corticosteroids. These nasal sprays help prevent and treat the inflammation caused by an upper respiratory mold allergy. For many people, they’re the most effective allergy medications, and they’re often the first medication prescribed.
To cut down on household dust, declutter, reduce paper, eliminate smoking and regularly change or clean the furnace and air conditioner filters. Also, park your shoes at the door — two-thirds of all dust contaminants are tracked into the home from the outside.
The main problem I have with mold is in the caulk around the shower against the stainless steel glass door frame, and around the sink.. Do you need to rinse the vinegar off once you spray these areas down? Will the vinegar corrode the stainless steel if left on too long?
So can you comment on what we should be looking for in terms of engaging a mold inspector? I have been told by my functional med doctor that chronic inflammation is contributing to my symptoms (elevated C4, MMP-9 and TGF Beta) and the tests showed that I have HLA Mold and multi-susceptibility type BUT so far I have not been able to find any significant areas of mold my home other than the usual – little bit on the bath grout, bit of black slime around the kitchen sink. Plus, my symptoms have been ongoing for four or five years now and we have only been in this house for three. Today I spoke to an independent mold inspector that said he would visually inspect our home (for several hundred dollars) and if there was mold or had been mold he would find it because it usually leaves some kind of indication. His website mentions the use of infrared thermography if necessary. Any advice on what else to ask/look for with mold inspections? Thanks
I would recommend testing your urine for mycotoxins by contacting either of the two labs listed below that offer the urine mycotoxin test and have them send you a kit to bring to your doctor. This test checks for 3 mycotoxins in the urine:

mold remediation guidelines | borax to kill mold

The presence of molds or mold metabolites does not necessarily correlate with human illness, though. Tests identify the presence of these substances at a moment in time, and not necessarily the time frame in which individuals are exposed and illness develops. Also, the presence of these substances does not necessarily mean exposure: the fact that they are present doesn’t necessarily mean they were inhaled.5
It is a vicious cycle – the foreign antigens (substances) stay in the body, causing the immune system to constantly fight back. This causes so much inflammation in the body that it leads to chronic illness, and the occurrence of many symptoms. Our entire being suffers from friendly fire from our own innate immune system.
I just had one of my cats urine tested for mycotoxins from real time labs and it came back as Gliotoxin and it’s a very nasty one. When I looked it up it said that these toxins can’t ever be pulled out of tissue and will remain imbedded because they have especially sharp hooks. They cause DNA/RNA damage as well. I want to cry. I probably have them too. Now I’m crying. This sucks.
Chlorine bleach is a strong toxic compound that emits very strong fumes. Therefore, always take caution when mixing the solution. In order to create this, you’ll need to mix a cup of bleach in one gallon of water. Make sure to wear rubber gloves during the mixing process to avoid contact with the skin. Add a little detergent to make the solution more effective and mix very well. Place some of it in a plastic spray bottle to apply.
If you think you have found toxic black mold growing in your home but are unsure then you should have it professionally tested. This is so you can be certain that it is actually mycotoxin-producing toxic mold (eg Stachybotrys or some other toxic mold species).
For people sensitive to mold, inhaling or touching mold spores can cause allergic reactions, including sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash. People with serious mold allergies may have more severe reactions, including shortness of breath. In people with asthma who are allergic to mold, breathing in spores can also cause asthma attacks.
Skin tests are actually more reliable than blood tests, although neither can detect allergies to every mold species as purified mold allergens from every type of mold are not available for allergy tests.
Stachybotrys chartarum (also known by its synonym Stachybotrys atra) is a greenish-black mold. It can grow on material with a high cellulose and low nitrogen content, such as fiberboard, gypsum board, paper, dust, and lint. Growth occurs when there is moisture from water damage, excessive humidity, water leaks, condensation, water infiltration, or flooding. Constant moisture is required for its growth. It is not necessary, however, to determine what type of mold you may have. All molds should be treated the same with respect to potential health risks and removal.
Borax and Vinegar have individual properties that are unique to themselves for attacking and killing mold fungi. And, these mold killing attributes do not cancel each other out when combined together.
Lyme can cause CIRS and CIRS can be misdiagnosed as Lyme, its complicated. Go read Dr. Shoemakers work e.g. the book Surviving Mold and the web site e.g. http://www.survivingmold.com/store1/presentations/rise-of-the-innates-lyme-in-2006-lessons-from-a-billion-years-ago
One reason is that bleach cannot completely kill mold growing in porous materials. The chlorine in bleach cannot penetrate into porous surfaces such as drywall or wood. The chlorine is left on the surface of porous materials and only the water component of the bleach is absorbed into the material, providing more moisture for the mold to feed on.
Once you know you’ve got a mold problem, it is time to start taking action to get rid of it. Air filters can be a great tool for improving air quality but ultimately, you want to minimize the amount of mold that can be contaminating your air. For that, you need a powerful mold remover. This spray from Home Armor is a great weapon against surface mold spots and other minor mold patches.
Scrub the affected area with soapy water. Fill a bucket with warm water, and add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of liquid dish soap. Swish the soap around in the water to make suds. Dip a stiff-bristled brush into the soapy water and scrub the moldy surface with the brush.[7] Re-dip the brush regularly and scrub until the area is saturated with suds. Rinse the area with water.
Lower the humidity. Mold thrives in humid environments where the moisture levels are above 50 percent. To prevent mold, install a hygrometer and keep and eye on the humidity levels. When it gets too high, ways to reduce humidity include:[15]
Baking soda is well known as a natural and safe household cleaner. But you can also use baking soda to kill mold in your home. Unlike other mold killers which contain harsh chemicals, baking soda is mild (pH of 8.1) and harmless to your family and any pets.

The more insidious and ubiquitous molds, though, produce no acutely dangerous mycotoxins but can still trigger inflammatory reactions, allergies, and asthma. The degree of impact from these exposure in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina is still being studied.
I used neat bleach on a sponge; just keep rubbing around the rubber seal. I left it for a while, then put it on a 95 wash and let it run with no washing in just to get rid of the bleach. Hope it helps; it did for me.

Often enough, many mold killing products will have ammonia already in them. Be extra cautious to follow the directions on the label to the letter and ensure that the cleanser is never mixed with bleach (in part or whole)!
You might consider calling a professional mold remediation service and have them come out (many times no charge for estimate from the reputable guys and gals). Take good notes with options on what they have observed and go from there.

What We Do

Replacing water damaged drywall is not very tough for the experienced DIY’er . However, if this is your first go at it – then it would probably be a good idea to call a professional to take care of it for you.
Generally, it is not necessary to identify the species of mold growing in a residence, and CDC does not recommend routine sampling for molds. Current evidence indicates that allergies are the type of diseases most often associated with molds. Since the reaction of individuals can vary greatly either because of the person’s susceptibility or type and amount of mold present, sampling and culturing are not reliable in determining your health risk. If you are susceptible to mold and mold is seen or smelled, there is a potential health risk; therefore, no matter what type of mold is present, you should arrange for its removal. Furthermore, reliable sampling for mold can be expensive, and standards for judging what is and what is not an acceptable or tolerable quantity of mold have not been established.
If the mycotoxins that are produced by toxic black mold are ingested or inhaled, you could expect to experience any one or combination of the following symptoms depending on the amount or duration of the exposure.
NOSING AROUND: The spindly orange vine known as dodder (Cuscuta pentagona) is a parasitic plant. Time-lapse video reveals that a dodder seedling twirls through the air, sniffing volatile chemicals released by neighboring plants in search of a suitable host. When it finds one, dodder entwines its victim and inserts nozzles into the host’s stem, siphoning of vital nutrients. Silvae, Wikimedia Commons
Stachybotrys (/ˌstækiˈbɒtrɪs/) is a genus of molds, hyphomycetes or asexually reproducing, filamentous fungi. Historically, it was considered closely related to the genus Memnoniella,[1][2] because the spores are produced in slimy heads rather than in dry chains. Recently, the synonymy of the two genera is generally accepted.[3] Most Stachybotrys species inhabit materials rich in cellulose. The genus has a widespread distribution, and contains about 50 species.[4] The name comes from the Greek words σταχυς stakhus (ear of grain, stalk, stick; metaphorically, progeny) and βότρυς botrus (cluster or bunch as in grapes, trusses).
The toll on human life and health so far has been small relative to what the images suggest. Authorities have cited thirty known deaths as of Tuesday night, while 13,000 people have been rescued. President Donald Trump—who this month undid an Obama-era requirement that infrastructure projects be constructed to endure rising sea levels—offered swift reassurance on Twitter: “Major rescue operations underway!” and “Spirit of the people is incredible. Thanks!”
In any case, a medical diagnosis is needed. For example, does the person have an allergy, asthma, or an infection? There are established methods for diagnosing these and many other conditions. Diagnosis is related to the disease process, not a specific trigger. For example, it is possible to test people for allergies to molds, but positive results do not necessarily correlate with symptoms. A sizeable percentage of the U.S. population will test positive for mold allergens but have no symptoms; estimates range from 3 percent to more than 90 percent.9 And, generally speaking, treatments will not differ if the cause is mold exposure versus other triggering conditions.
Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, exposure to molds can lead to symptoms such as stuffy nose, wheezing, and red or itchy eyes, or skin. Some people, such as those with allergies to molds or with asthma, may have more intense reactions. Severe reactions may occur among workers exposed to large amounts of molds in occupational settings, such as farmers working around moldy hay. Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath.
If you think you might have toxic black mold in your home but haven’t found the toxic black mold colony then you may want to have a toxic black mold inspection performed. Some reasons to think you could have a toxic black mold problem are described in the next section.
Your walls, floors, appliances, carpet, or furniture – they can all provide the food mold needs to grow. But the thing all molds need most is moisture, so you’re most likely to see mold in damp places such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, and crawl spaces.
“If you have a fire, you need to know about it,” says Meri-K Appy, president of Safe Kids USA, who recommends having hard-wired, interconnected smoke alarms, “so that if fire breaks out in the basement and you’re two floors up sleeping, at the first moment the basement alarm goes off, all will go off.” Such alarms buy you precious time; it can take fewer than three minutes from the time a fire starts to the time of “flashover” – complete ignition of all gasses and combustible elements in a room.

To get rid of mold, scrub surfaces with detergent, preferably a water-based, VOC-free product like Microbloc dsinfx as opposed to bleach. Replace porous materials such as ceiling tile and carpet with non-porous or mold-resistant ones. If the mold damage covers more than 10 square feet, the EPA recommends hiring a professional.
It’s going to cost a bit more than ammonia or bleach. However, it stores quite well and has a really good shelf-life (keep lid containers air-tight). When finished with small mold cleaning or prevention projects, simply put your spray bottle (properly labeled) away to use at future date.
Thoroughly shake and beat the cushions smartly to get rid of any remaining baking soda. Apply white distilled vinegar and give the cushion a quick – but well covered light bath and allow to disinfect, kill odors and then allow to dry.

What We Do

One of the most important things about remediation is that you should never EVER use bleach for removing mold, as it would make the problem worse. While diet is important in any case, it will not cure you of CIRS, if that is your problem. Look up a Shoemaker certified doctor on http://www.survivingmold.com. Many of them do phone consultations.
test. Any mold Dr’s in VA? Any one here using attorneys? Do I have to lose everything? I’m disabled…my service dog has shown symptoms off & on…she does not go in with me when I tend to the cat 2 times a week & I wear a mask but I’m still effected when I go in apt.
Your liver functions to detoxify toxins. If you are overburdened with toxins as is the case in people with this syndrome, it is helpful to supply your liver with nutrients that help your liver work at it’s optimal capacity. There are several nutrients, herbs and foods that assist with the liver detoxification process.
Hydrogen Peroxide – Mix 1 part 20% hydrogen peroxide with 4 parts water to create a solution. This should only be used on organic fabrics (cotton, linen, etc.) that aren’t flame-resistant or don’t have easy-care finishes.
I’ve always wanted to say thanks to internet and many thanks to all those who for heartful reasons take their time and share their knowledge to help others with everyday complications – Mellisa, you’re one of those who would save the dayCn
There is no cure or antidote which can be taken for toxic black mold. The only solution is to remove the toxic black mold from your environment or remove yourself from the environment. Once you are away from toxic black mold your body will start to recover and most of your symptoms should go away over time. However some of the damage from toxic black mold can be permanent.
A HEPA filter that is capable of removing ultrafine particles (<0.1 microns) like mold, dust, pet dander, VOCs, and even viruses from the air. These ultrafine particles represent 90 percent of all airborne pollution that you breathe. If mold is growing in your home, you need to clean up the mold and fix the moisture problem. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of household laundry bleach in 1 gallon of water. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organization that sets standards for responsible management of the world’s forests. These shelves and cabinet were made from FSC-certified oak plywood with a soy-based adhesive. Gently use your fingers to press around the ceiling and drywall. If you get a mushy feel to it, do not press any harder and call a professional water damage consultant to come out and go from there (as well as the Landlord if applicable). Left unchecked, it can be a health hazard, causing potential respiratory problems and severe allergic reactions. Especially if you have a pet, a baby, or elderly folk in the home, it can be detrimental to their immune system! The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has listed the absence of AFCIs among the primary residential hazards associated with burns and fire-related injuries, and the NFPA's National Electrical Code now requires that they be used to protect almost every circuit in the home. The grout cleaning was fantastic. I have spend a lot of money and tried different methods to clean the grout in my kitchen and nothing worked After using this method my floor looks like the day we installed it. The bottom areas you referenced to would need to dry out as much as possible before plastering. Would hate to see the foundation encapsulated in moisture – have you access to portable carpet blowers – these would help the drying process greatly. You can also use vinegar with hydrogen peroxide during the cleaning to more effectively remove the mold. Afterwards store the spray bottle in a dark place since light diminishes hydrogen peroxide's effectiveness. I plan on using your instructions today. My daughter has mold all over her bathroom walls and ceiling and small, stubborn mold stains along the caulk around her tub. I’ve got one heck of a project ahead of me. I plan on using a mixture of 1 part white distilled vinegar, 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide, AND about 1 tsp of tea tree. I’ve got my fingers crossed. Will post my results. Oh, and thanks for this great info. NOTE- 27% hydrogen peroxide is a very strong chemical, which can burn skin instantly! Wear sturdy neoprene gloves for this whole process. If any peroxide gets on your hands, wash it off immediately with lots of water. Many mold inspectors are not using comprehensive, accurate testing methods. If you call up a local mold inspector and ask him to come assess your property, chances are he will do a visual inspection and take some air samples. Both of these methods can yield useful information, but on their own, they are not enough. If you have visible mold in your home, it will help to have someone who's not allergic to mold clean the area using a solution of 1 ounce of bleach to 1 quart of water or a commercially available mold-cleaning product. If you have to clean up the mold yourself, be sure to wear long rubber gloves, safety goggles and a mask to limit your exposure to the mold. 2. Soft furnishings are problematic. After I moved and felt significantly better – though I’ve still got a long way to go – I recognized that I still felt sedated/off/lethargic when I sat on a particular sofa and on the two chairs in my living room. That was tough, because they were really good pieces of leather furniture that I’d bought in the last couple of years as real “adult” furniture. I thought leather might be more impervious than fabric, but moisture & mold spores can still get in. So, I got rid of soft furnishings and bought new sofa & chairs.
Pinkeye, also called conjunctivitis, is redness or irritation of the conjunctivae, the membranes on the inner part of the eyelids and the membranes covering the whites of the eyes. These membranes react to a wide range of bacteria, viruses, allergy-provoking agents, irritants, and toxic agents.

Your favorite part of the day may be snuggling up to your fur baby, but pet dander traps allergens — which means you’re inviting those allergens to your bed. If you can’t resist the cuddles, then you should completely shave your dog. Just kidding — just be sure to bathe them once a week.
Made of tree pulp taken from strictly managed sustainable forests, paper-based countertops are a great alternative to stone and plastic surfaces. They come in a variety of colors and are mostly stain-, scratch- and heat-resistant.
Symptoms may include frequent thirst, susceptibility to shocks from static electricity, lower production of sex hormones loss of libido, and abnormal cortisol production. This panel looks at the following test for stage 7 effects.
Mycotoxins are carried on the spores of toxic black mold and are also found throughout the entire mold colony. People with toxic black mold in their homes are mostly exposed to mycotoxins through breathing them in. This leads to toxic symptoms and health problems.
An IQAir HealthProPlus. IQAir makes HEPA filters that employ a four-stage filtration process (which includes activated carbon) to filter particles all the way down to 0.003 microns—the smallest particles that exist—with a guaranteed efficacy of more than 99.5 percent. We have one of these in the main living area of our home and one in the basement. Important note: Amazon.com is not an authorized reseller of IQAir, so if you purchase from there the warranty won’t be valid. I recommend purchasing directly from IQAir or from one of their authorized resellers.
There are certainly others and a really good site to visit if you need specifics on different mold groups and the relevant species nested within each group is https://www.moldbacteria.com/mold-types.html.
I just want to know if anyone has cats that can tell there is mold in their carpets? My cats refuse to walk on our carpets much less lie on them. They jump from chair to chair and couch to couch. The only floor they will walk on is the kitchen and bathroom floors. I believe we have gotten mold from the downstairs getting flooded when we had a bad storm last spring. I found black spots in the carpet even when nothing was spilled on it. Any help would be appreciated.
The VCS test is so accurate that, if it is positive, there is a 92 percent chance that the patient has CIRS. That said, it’s important to note that a positive VCS test cannot be used to rule CIRS in or out on its own, and I have definitely had patients that passed the VCS test who went on to be positive for CIRS, and vice versa.
But, testing does have its advantages, one being a sense of closure. Testing gives you confidence that this is really what you are dealing with and psychologically this can be a huge help for the patient as well as family members struggling to believe that their loved one is not crazy.
Step 2: Contain the effected area. To do this, use duct tape and a plastic sheet to seal off vents or openings where air might flow in or out. You might place a small fan in an open window to direct the mold spores outdoors. Remember, mold can easily be transported to different areas in your house on pets or on the soles of shoes.
Slime molds did the same thing at intervals of 60 and 90 minutes, although, on average, only about half of the slime molds tested showed spontaneous slowing in the absence of an environmental change.Because the slime mold cannot rely on its slime for this trick, Saigusa speculates that it instead depends on an internal mechanism of some kind, perhaps involving the perpetually pulsating gelatinous contents of its one cell, known as cytoplasm. The slime mold’s membrane rhythmically constricts and relaxes, keeping the cytoplasm within flowing. When the amoeba’s membrane encounters food, it pulsates more quickly and expands, allowing more cytoplasm to flow into that region; when it stumbles onto something aversive—such as bright light—its palpitations slow down and cytoplasm moves elsewhere. Somehow, the slime mold may be keeping track of its own rhythmic pulsing, creating a kind of simple clock that would allow it to anticipate future events.
Hi there, I recently moved out if a rental villa after nearly 2yrs, that was inundated with copious amounts( in under kit.cabinets, laundry rm, both bthrms, both bed rms, attic, ceiling, walls, fireplace and outside storage rm and patio) of Black mold. It was not visible until the odor led us to find the horrors that surrounded us. The roof was rotten and needed replacing and after investigating further, found there had been a house flood that was covered up by cheap flooring, base boards and new paint. It was so toxic smelling I believe my husband, myself and Boston terrier were being poisoned the whole time. The noxious smell could even be found on clothing and eventually seen on belongings, and the usual suspect symptoms arose.. even worse more, we were also infested with Brown Recluse spiders!!
Many different types of molds can grow on food. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the types of mold that can be found in foods include Alternaria, Aspergillus, Botrytis, Cladosporium, Fusarium, Geotrichum, Monilia, Manoscus, Mortierella, Mucor, Neurospora, Oidium, Oosproa, Penicillium, Rhizopus, and Thamnidium. Certain kinds of cheeses are made with mold, like brie, gorgonzola, stilton, roquefort, and camembert. The mold that is part of the food manufacturing process is considered to be safe and does not pose health risks. It is also normal for dry-cured country ham and hard salami to have surface mold. The USDA has a helpful online resource that can show you which molds in food are safe and how to handle moldy foods.
Getting rid of black mold with tea tree oil is an extremely effective method. Tea tree is an essential oil that is safe for people and pets. It is more expensive than vinegar but a few teaspoons go a long way. I’ve used it successfully on a small area of the rug and a moldy shower curtain.
I just read the war within and it was very informative. I just found the correct and currant codes for SIRS….ICD code R65.10 and that’s for 2016. I’m not going to let BCBS NOT pay for my care! I’m going to keep fighting and refuse to cancel my insurance so that I can pay for the care…I can’t afford $1,100 a mth AND pay out of pocket for the treatment. What are we paying insurance for if they don’t cover anything you need?!!!!
Submerging a city means introducing a new ecosystem of fungal growth that will change the health of the population in ways we are only beginning to understand. The same infrastructure and geography that have kept this water from dissipating created a uniquely prolonged period for fungal overgrowth to take hold, which can mean health effects that will bear out over years and lifetimes.
Molds are a large and taxonomically diverse number of fungal species in which the growth of hyphae results in discoloration and a fuzzy appearance, especially on food.[3] The network of these tubular branching hyphae, called a mycelium, is considered a single organism. The hyphae are generally transparent, so the mycelium appears like very fine, fluffy white threads over the surface. Cross-walls (septa) may delimit connected compartments along the hyphae, each containing one or multiple, genetically identical nuclei. The dusty texture of many molds is caused by profuse production of asexual spores (conidia) formed by differentiation at the ends of hyphae. The mode of formation and shape of these spores is traditionally used to classify molds.[4] Many of these spores are colored, making the fungus much more obvious to the human eye at this stage in its life-cycle.
Too many preventable accidents have happened when combining 2 or more cleaning agents together. Often enough, this occurred because the user (although well intentioned) did so to create a stronger cleaning agent for the job at hand.
Mildew is a surface type of mold that won’t damage your home’s structure. But other types of mold cause rot. Probe the suspect area with a screwdriver or other sharp tool (Photo 3). If the wood is soft or crumbles, the fungi have taken hold and rot has begun. We’ll show you how to remove mold from wood in a few steps.
Toxic black mold, or Stachybotrys chartarum, as it’s known to scientists, can release spores as it feeds on organic materials in common household materials like drywall, carpet, insulation or sub-flooring that have been exposed to moisture. These spores, if ingested or inhaled, can cause a range of unpleasant and even dangerous symptoms in humans.
Mycotoxins from toxic black mold are teratogenic. This means they can cause problems in the fetus during pregnancy which then leads to birth defects. Toxic black mold mycotoxins are also cytoxotic and mutagenic (cause cell mutations) and inhibit protein synthesis including DNA and RNA.

What We Do

The toilet flange is the piece of plumbing that connects the toilet to the sewer. They all have open slots where the toilet bolts go and holes where the flange is screwed to the floor. These openings expose the bathroom sub floor which is food for mold to the inherent moisture that is always there.
Never EVER use bleach for cleaning mold – it will make the problem worse. Mold remediation should be done by professionals. Your symptoms does sound like mold illness aka CIRS. Best way forward is to get the bloodwork done to see if you have CIRS (see list on http://www.survivingmold.com). To evaluate the house you could consider doing an ERMI test which you can buy from http://www.mycometrics.com.
Try shampooing the floor with a solution of about 10-to-1 warm water and ammonia, vacuuming well afterwards with the shampooer to dry the area as much as possible. You also could look into where the mold is getting its moisture to survive. Unless you know it was from a spill, water is getting into your carpet.
I have read through all the comments about the ‘black mold’ on rubber door seals. I had an Indeset and never had it, my daughter had another make and never had it; within the past four years, we have both purchased new machines, both different makes, and we have both got this ‘black mold’ problem. I am thinking it is something in our washing powder or softener??? Theses days we don’t know what goes into washing powder; scientists in some lab somewhere have put something in it that creates mold, but makes our clothes look cleaner when they come out. I don’t know, but it seems like it doesn’t matter what brand of machine; we all get mold. Any boffins out there that could shed some light on it???
Dr. Shoemaker also estimates that 2 percent of the population has genes that render them highly susceptible to developing a multi-system, multi-symptom illness after prolonged or repeated exposure to biotoxins. (Side note: unfortunately, I am part of that 2 percent, which could explain a lot about my past history with chronic illness!)
The fourth step is to use both natural supplements and pharmaceutical medications to remove the mold toxins from your body.  Since these toxins are the main cause of this syndrome, effective treatment is geared toward removal of these toxins. These remedies can be found on the BLACK MOLD DETOX webpage!
Removing black mold is a step-by-step process that requires patience, an investment in protective gear and black mold removal products, and, of course, the courage to brave dark, cramped spaces inhabited by toxic fungus.

My mold problem is in the ceiling, caused by a leak in the roof, which has been fixed. Are these solutions mentioned for inside the house safe, effective, and legal for this kind of problem and what precautions should be used?
Before the renovation, the fourteen hospital employees developed respiratory health problems related to mold. All previously had been healthy. Four of them developed occupational asthma. One of these employees also developed pneumonia. He had a series of respiratory issues, fevers, and infections which recurred whenever he was assigned to work in this building but improved whenever he was transferred elsewhere.
Good detail on this hub. Please remember that at any time that you feel uncomfortable about doing your mold remediation yourself, please call a professional. As outlined above, mold is not something to be taken lightly.

It is not possible to predict the degree of severity of the health risks associated with mold in the home. Allergic individuals vary in their degree of susceptibility to mold, and any symptoms and health risk may also depend upon the extent and exact type of mold that is present.
Chlorophyll is in green vegetables, especially dark green leafy ones, so eat them regularly. Chlorella, spirulina and phytoplankton are three of the best sources of chlorophyll; they’re available in a variety of supplement forms.
Molds can also pose a hazard to human and animal health when they are consumed following the growth of certain mold species in stored food. Some species produce toxic secondary metabolites, collectively termed mycotoxins including aflatoxins, ochratoxins, fumonisins, trichothecenes, citrinin, and patulin. These toxic properties may be used for the benefit of humans when the toxicity is directed against other organisms; for example, penicillin adversely affects the growth of Gram-positive bacteria (e.g. Clostridium species), certain spirochetes and certain fungi.[19]
Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is a lung disease sometimes called “farmer’s lung” as it is associated with overwhelming exposure to fungi found in feed and grain. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis also has been associated with bird droppings in pigeon breeders and exposure to molds in homes and hot tubs.19
We just moved into a rental house that is 50 years old. The master bathroom shower was very clean, but the grout was really stained with grey and black lines and patches. None of the cleaners I tried worked at all. I just about gave up on removing the nasty stains, but it grossed me out so much that I kept doing research on the internet.
Aspergillus niger * Aspergillus niger can be found in environments where there is very little nutritional value for it to grow. However, it is abundant throughout our environment among the many species of molds.
Kirei board is made from sorghum stalks, which are typically burned or thrown into landfills after the edible portion is harvested. Kirei wood is made with non-toxic adhesive that does not emit formaldehyde.
I’m still researching the difference between these filters, but one of the big advantages of the IQAir seems to be that it filters particles as small as 0.003 microns. This is 10 times smaller than a virus. Given that a lot of the most harmful particles are ultrafine, this may be a significant advantage over the Blueair, which only filters particles as small as 0.1 microns. But this is not my area of expertise and I am still learning more.
In 2004 guidelines update in 2009, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheezing in otherwise healthy people. Mold also was linked to the worsening of asthma symptoms in people who have asthma. Mold was also reported to be linked to hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to this immunologic condition. This uncommon disease is similar to pneumonia and can develop in susceptible individuals after brief or prolonged exposure to mold.
Removal of biotoxins in patients with CIRS usually begins with binders like cholestyramine or Welchol. Other steps include eradicating biofilm-forming staph colonizations that tend to develop in the nasal passages of CIRS patients and correcting high/low MMP9, ADH/osmolality, C4a, TGF-b1, VEGF, and VIP.
While most molds take just one or two days to colonize, toxic black mold usually needs eight to twelve days. Once toxic black mold is growing though it usually forces out any other molds growing nearby and takes over its environment.
Hi! I have been suffering from mold, so I can relate to an extent. I would recommend getting rid of anything where mold may remain. Not sure about clothing, but definitely porous furniture – anything but metal. It is not worth it. I would also get the highest quality water possible to flush out your system.
Unlike an air purifier which circulates a portion of a room’s indoor air and pushes it through a filter, Air Oasis’s Surface and Air Sanitizers produce safe catalytic molecules that are blown throughout the room to sanitize both the air and surfaces 24/7/365.
Another good product for cleaning mold from countertops to decks, patios and indoor sheds or garages is made by “Concrobium”. The “ConcrobiumXT Eco Wash” product is a non-toxic mold cleaner as well and is ideal for wood, composite wood, stone, stucco, vinyl, aluminum and much more. They also have a “Mold Stain Eraser” product that would probably help you with your project.
Whether the wood is finished or raw, if mold has penetrated, you are going to need a stronger solution, one that’s capable of killing spores beneath the surface of the material. To that end, mix 1 part detergent, 10 parts bleach, and 20 parts warm water. Apply your solution to the moldy area by means of a scrub sponge or a stiff-bristled brush, then allow the solution to air-dry on the wood.
You need to have top-notch ventilation to remove the humidity and moisture from the air.  The lack of humidity creates a poor breeding ground for bacteria and is the easiest way to maintain your mold-free space.
I visited your site and noticed you provide a lot of good tips for cleaning the bathroom, toilet, etc. HOwever, I stumbled upon a toilet bowl cleaner called NEVERSCRUB and thought it would be great for you to share with your readers! It removed all my hardwater and grime stains. I dont work for the company,. I am a housewife that swears by this product and figured you should share this too. I love your blogs!
People often do not act quickly to remove toxic black mold. However, as soon as you find toxic black mold in your home you should take steps to have the mold removed. Ignoring the problem will only let it become worse.
I have small spots of Black mold and dark Yellow circles forming on my ceiling in my room and has increased within 6months but due to work, I have only just noticed how bad it has got. I have also spotted white fluffy mould on wood and Black material on my wardrobe. My Asthma seems to have come back as I have noticed a difference to my breathing. I also drink more water then usual. Would Tea tree oil help with the Black and Yellow mold? Any help or advice would be great. Since reading up on it, it has freaked me out.
Chris: what were your daughter’s symptoms? My 1,5 year old daughter has some issues that are too mild for normal physicians to take seriously, but bad enough that Ive been reading and reading for months, trying to figure things out, going crazy, you must know the feeling. Wonder what the symptoms could be like in a toddler.
Blueair Sense filters. Blueair filters use “HEPASilent Technology,” which combines electrostatic and mechanical filtration to capture 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns in size. We use these in bedrooms and my home office because they are smaller, quieter, and more energy efficient than the IQAir HealthProPlus units.
The air sampler pump draws in air and deposits microscopic airborne particles on a culture medium. The medium is cultured in a laboratory and the fungal genus and species are determined by visual microscopic observation. Laboratory results also quantify fungal growth by way of a spore count for comparison among samples. The pump operation time was recorded and when multiplied by the operation time results in a specific volume of air obtained. Although a small volume of air is actually analyzed, common laboratory reporting techniques extrapolate the spore count data to equate the amount of spores that would be present in a cubic meter of air.[21]
The moisture and warmth provide a perfect environment for bacteria and plants to live in–especially if it’s not regularly cleaned. The dirt and grime provide plenty of food for the mold to live off of.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), if visible mold is present on inspection, testing is usually unnecessary. There are no Environmental Protection Agency or government standards that have been established for mold or mold spore levels, so it is impossible to prove that a building or room is in compliance with any health regulations concerning mold exposure. Likewise, the CDC does not recommend routine sampling and testing of mold in the home. Tolerable or acceptable limits of mold exposure for humans have not been defined, and since individuals vary in their susceptibility to mold, testing cannot reliably predict the degree of health risks from any occurrence of mold.

What We Do

Tracy, so sorry to hear about your illness. I was just diagnosed with mycotoxin illness, CIRS (chronic inflammatory response syndrome), hypothyroid, Hashimoto’s thyroid it’s in Feb of this yr, 2016 due to a minor water problem July 25,2012 that the supposed remidiators didn’t handle properly…and mold grew within 2 days. After 3mths of arguing and pleading with insurance and the ass holes that were yelling at me saying there is no problem cuz they are the professionals, I got permission from insurance to call an air quality specialist to come find the mold…that insurance KNEW was here cuz they were here many times and smelled it. They found mold right away and recommended a full remediation of the finished basement where the pipe had burst. The only prob is that NO ONE told me to shut off the HVAC and so the mold and mycotoxins were being pulled throughout the whole house and have contamminated EVERYTHING I own…everything! I have to move out and never come back and start over. I started with asthma within 2 days, then urinary pain, frequency and horrible pressure within a mth and was seeing a urologist who did surgery on me that I didn’t need and over active bladder meds which did nothing…I’ve never been in so much pain in my life and it never stopped. I switched to another dr…a urogynocologist who jerked me around and lots of meds and a bladder repair that she said would help with the pain and freq did nothing to help…and I’m left with a $2,300 bill AND no relief. Then I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer…after losing 2 cats to cancer before this and after the mold..so I started to get suspicious that there might be a correlation. I went through chemo…and now I have found out there are many ways to cure cancer without surgery, chemo or radiation and my legs are ruined from nerve damage. My eyes got blurry and I was running to the eye dr asking him over and over and over to change my lenses cuz I still couldn’t see. I had a very serious bout of depression in March of 2013…7-8mths after my exposure…and I like you were house bound 24-7 with my cats cuz I had a seizure disorder at the time and couldn’t drive. Also I just read many times over that if mold is suspected and especially during remediation…NO BLOWERS of any kind should be used cuz they also blow the mold spores I tot he air and they get into everything..theses “professionals” that were here had blowers to “dry out the walls and carpet” which I found out you can’t do and they should have cut out the walls and taken up the carpet within 24-48hrs and then none of this would have happened! I started having terrible muscle pain and joint pain…especially my hips and fingers. Freq migraine headaches…and no sleep at all especially cuz I had to pee every 30mins around the clock. Then they think your a complainer so they suggest you “see someone” like a psychiatrist for meds which has happened to almost all of use effected by this illness. Oh, and the ANGERY issues I have…they call it mold rage…so don’t piss me off! I started yelling and cursing at people on the phone and in person and was blaming it on the seizure meds or menopause and crying cuz I’d feel so bad when I directed it toward my son who was away at college…he still dosent believe me that it’s the illness. I’m so dehydrated all the time and my skin actually burns if I don’t keep drinking cuz all I do is pee. There are so many other problems I have that it would take days for m to tell…but you get the idea. I just watched a short movie by Dave Aspry called “the movie MOLD” or MOLDY about his effects and he was one of the geniuses who discovered “the cloud” for the Internet..so you know he’s credible. I saw a lot of Drs and my long time interest after I brought him the lab results confirming I have all the above things wrong with me after he was blowing me off for yrs said ther is nothing wrong with me, mold doesn’t make anyone sick and they are lying to me to make money and the people that write these books just want fame and I don’t have pain and the peeing has nothing to do with mold and I don’t have hypothyroid and don’t worry about a little Hashi etc and then walked out of the room and b=never came back. Then I just on Friday saw a endocrinologist to get more thyroid and I’d never seen her and she was listed as a top dr in Nj….insulted me, made faces and fun of me cuz I went organic and I believe in mold illness and I don’t have hypo and there is nothing to do for Hashi I just have to live with it and she’s a professional who goes to all the meetngs and none of us believe in mold making anyone sick…and then I told her she’s narrow minded and ignorant and MAYBE she should listen and hear from someone like me who’s life has been turned upside down from this BEFORE she shuts the door on the possibility that this DOESNT exist CUZ I KNOW IT DOES AND THE LABS AND MY SYMPTOMS PROVE IT! She was not happy with me and I just walked out. I’m a nurse who always respected rd..but I don’t now and not just because of this illness but because I’d been mis managed for 5 yrs before reguarding something else. They don’t know nearly as much as we give them credit for so listen to YOUR gut and if you think your onto something DONT give up until you find someone who believes you. I’m not sure where you live on the east coast, but I live in Nj and happened to land in a Drs office down the shore in Springlake,NJ about something else and he had just finished his certification with Dr Shoemaker on mold and he FINALLY asked all the right questions about my water prob and mold and sent me to my lab with a mile long slip and 2weeks later I finally had the answers to my suffering for 4 very long yrs. mycotoxin illness/CIRS, Hashimoto’s disease/hypothyroid/ low iodine/low iron. I really would suggest cuz your quite sick si to maybe if you don’t live hrs away from the early part of the jersey shore, is to call DR Rothman and talk to his nurse Brenda and see what she thinks. It may save you lot of money and time to go to someone who believes in mold illness, knows the symptoms and most importantly the correct tests to run and either it will give you your answers or not and if it is something else he’ll be the one to figure it out. He gives you an 1 1/2 for the 1st appointment and you have to pay out of pocket but lab Corp runs the tests and my insurance covered that. I would at least call…you have nothing to lose at this point! His # is 732-268-7663. Good luck!
In the late 1990s, Dr. Shoemaker discovered a connection between a mysterious illness that some of his patients were experiencing and a toxin produced by a fish-killing dinoflagellate called Pfiesteria. Since then, Dr. Shoemaker has linked a similar kind of illness to toxins from a wide variety of microorganisms and chemicals.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, GFCIs have contributed “significantly” to the reduction of electrocution and severe electric shock incidents since their introduction in the early 1970s. The National Electrical Code requires GFCIs, an inexpensive device, for receptacles with proximity to water: outdoors, bathrooms, garages, kitchens, crawlspaces and unfinished basements, laundry/utility rooms, and pools and spas.

How to remove mold and how to perform black mold removal can be done with ordinary household cleaning products. But disturbing big infestations can be bad for your health, particularly if you are an allergy sufferer or have a weakened immune system. When you discover an extensive mold problem, we recommend that you use the rigorous protective measures we show in Photos 1 – 6, or consider calling in a professional, who knows what kills mold, to handle the problem of how to remove mold. (Search “Industrial Hygiene Consultants” or “Environmental and Ecological Consultants” online to find out how to remove black mold. Or call your local public health department.) And even if you hire pros, read through this article and make sure they follow similar precautions on how to get rid of mold and to keep the mold from spreading throughout your house.
Fungi comprise a vast world of organisms, perhaps as many as 300,000 species. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines funguses, or fungi, as “types of plants that have no leaves, flowers or roots.”3 Fungi include such seemingly unrelated substances as poisonous and non-poisonous mushrooms; organisms that can cause athlete’s foot, fingernail infections, and some types of pneumonia; molds found in cheese, peanut butter, mulch, hay, grains, and spoiled foods; and the black material growing in bathroom grout.
Lori, I’ve had pretty good experience getting mold and mold stains out of fabrics using Buttermilk. Not sure why it works, but it does. We had a flood and some of the clothes set too long in containers and developed mold. Soaking them in a water/buttermilk bath really got them clean again.
The bottom areas you referenced to would need to dry out as much as possible before plastering. Would hate to see the foundation encapsulated in moisture – have you access to portable carpet blowers – these would help the drying process greatly.
Dr. Shoemaker further refined the relevance of ERMI testing to CIRS patients by creating the HERTSMI-2 scoring system. This is a weighted score that takes the relative levels and danger of particular mold species into account.
A challenge for conventional medical practitioners in diagnosing toxic mold illness has been that symptoms as well as laboratory tests tend to present somewhat differently across sufferers (and may change over time for particular individuals).
Antitrust investigations into the company had been ongoing for almost a decade by then, since the George H.W. Bush administration. The ubiquity of Microsoft’s operating systems had raised initial concern, but Internet Explorer, Microsoft’s entry into the web-browser marketplace, had stoked further worry. Given Microsoft Windows’ 90 percent market penetration at the time, government and industry worried that the company would use that position to charge fees or otherwise control access to the internet, an important new tool for personal and business uses.
Many people are diagnosed and treated for allergies by their primary care physicians. However, depending on the severity of your allergies, your primary care doctor may refer you to a doctor who specializes in treating allergies.

I have the same symptoms as you. The burning gets worse when follow the protocol for removing the toxins. I was diagnosed first with Fibromyalgia, then my thyroid went hypo. I got sick so quickly. In hind site…everything got bad when I was under stress. At times I couldn’t walk up and down the stairs. My lips would swell for no apparent reason. The allergist couldn’t find anything wrong.
We also had some of the bales wick moisture up from the bottom when we had a wet spell (before we had the roof on we had plastic over the walls), they are sitting up on a stone rubble bed but they still sucked up some water. They seem to have dried out well but wondering if you have any ideas.
These devices are not cheap, but given what I’ve come to understand about the importance of indoor air quality to health, and given that my wife, my daughter, and I are all genetically susceptible to CIRS, I think they’re worth the expense. As an added benefit, the air in your home will smell like it does outside! It’s an incredible difference.
Bleach is often mistaken as the best warrior against mold, but it won’t go deep into the wood to prevent mold growth. Disinfectants can kill molds but do not prevent new growth on damp wood or other materials. Many people are beginning to understand that bleach and other chemicals are harmful, even aggravating asthma and the respiratory tract. Its full negative impact on the environment is not fully known.

Wear a respirator or a facemask rated for black mold spore protection, and cover arms, legs and hands to avoid contact with mold spores. Use soap and a sponge to remove visible mold. If the moldy area is dry, lightly spray with water, as this will reduce the incidence of airborne mold spores during cleaning. Next, use commercial black mold removal products, which can be found in most hardware or home repair stores, to disinfect the moldy areas, in addition to any adjacent areas. If you use bleach, make sure it won’t discolor the material or surface. Place all sponges, equipment and other materials used in cleaning in a heavy duty garbage bag, and if possible, remove the bag through an nearby exit as opposed to the main house, to avoid distributing mold spores.
The absolute key to dealing with black mold anywhere is to identify what’s creating the warm, damp environment in which the black mold can flourish. If you clean up black mold but don’t address the source of the moisture, then the black mold is highly likely to return. No natural or conventional treatment will prevent or remove mold permanently unless you remove mold’s necessary ingredient, which is moisture.
I had a patient come back with a positive stachybotrys IgA level. My patient was greatly relieved to have these results as they helped her grasp that mold toxicity was the cause of her symptoms. It also helped her with her relationship, as her condition being caused by toxic mold, now had more credibility in her boyfriend’s eyes.
The meds I need are not affordable such as daily caspofungin injections or pozacanazole tabs and daily injections of gamma globulin. Each combination plus weekly irrigation costs between $100,000 to $118,000 per year. I cannot afford them and I have no health insurance. I need a miracle. My health just keeps declining and I have been bedridden for almost 2 years.
Today, 16 questions like this comprise the VARK questionnaire that Fleming developed to determine someone’s “learning style.” VARK, which stands for “Visual, Auditory, Reading, and Kinesthetic,” sorts students into those who learn best visually, through aural or heard information, through reading, or through “kinesthetic” experiences.  (“I learned much later that vark is Dutch for “pig,” Fleming wrote later, “and I could not get a website called vark.com because a pet shop in Pennsylvania used it for selling aardvarks—earth pigs!”)
FAST FOLDING: If you stroke the sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica), also known as touch-me-not, its fern-like row of leaves reflexively folds in half. Same thing if you blow on the plant or shake it. Whereas the Venus flytrap evolved rapid movement to catch insect prey, the sensitive plant probably shrinks from touch to discourage any insects or herbivores looking for a leafy snack. H.
Hey Wes, thanks for the very informative article. I am in the mold industry and have never heard of the Grape Seed Extract for removal. Is that something you came up with or where did you hear about it? Just curious
Outdoors, fungi break down organic matter, including leaves, grass clippings, and dead trees. The fungi themselves constitute a large mass of material with many types of spores. These spores vary with the material on which they are found, the season, and the weather. At any given time, the same types of spores are found indoors because they enter through doors and windows and on clothing and shoes.
Cut stained or musty carpet and pads into 6 x 8-ft. sections with a utility knife. Using a pump sprayer, mist the surfaces with water to control the spread of spores, and roll up the sections. Double-wrap them in 6-mil plastic and tape them with duct tape for disposal. Wear protective clothing and run an exhaust fan in the window.
Great thread!!! I’m in Oz too…and yeah, clove oil is tops 👍 Run my own cleaning business and only use essential oiIs to clean. Clean off the mould with vinegar and tea tree…then when it’s dry, just spritz it lightly with a spray bottle of water and a few drops of clove oil. Then leave it to dry….but make sure it’s a very light spray.
Thanks for the article, I will definitley try out some of these things to get rid of the mold in my house. For several months I just had a slight cough, I didn’t think much of it at first, but when it didn’t stop I went to the doctor. After a while of taking medicine with no results, I decided to look for other causations, turns out there is mold behind my walls.
The AO does produce a small amount of ozone, but it is below the recommended limit. That said, we have always had a HEPA/carbon filter like the IQAir or a BlueAir with a SmokeStop (carbon) filter added to it in the same room as the AO, and I do recommend that to my patients. http://www.airoasis.com/knowledgebase/ozone-air-quality-purifiers
Did rounds of empty washing with bleach; didn’t help. Used vinegar. It didn’t help either. It’s very difficult to pull back the inner gasket, but I could see black sludge oozing out of the grooves. I’m so grossed out. I’ve been washing everything by hand.
However, if one of my sheds had lost a roof or sidewall and/or was exposed to the elements for any length of time (to include the slab); and I needed to get a handle on the mold growth asap; I would probably go with one of the two products below as the first step.
If the moisture damage has been neglected or gone unnoticed for long, you’re likely to find rot. Where possible, remove and replace soft, spongy studs and wall sheathing. Where removal is difficult, treat the affected areas with a wood preservative (available at home centers), after cleaning the wood and allowing it to dry. Then double up rotted members with pressure-treated wood.

What We Do

Hi Patricia. I don’t know whether I tried the baking soda method based on just knowledge of baking soda, or having read someplace about its use for reducing mold odors. I have been participating in online discussion groups such as the GreenCanary email list on Yahoo! Groups for a long time. This method (storing books with baking soda) would be useless with live mold. Mold spores give off toxic chemicals that are by-products of their digestion, and these chemicals can inundate any material that is in the environment. Some items, such as a glass table, would be easily cleaned or would soon off-gas the chemicals once the live mold has been removed, but things such as books can absorb a lot of them and they remain for a long time. I did have a lot of success storing moldy-smelling things in a room with an air purifier (an Austin Air that has a lot of carbon in the filter). Books do not clean well this way though unless they are propped so that the pages are open slightly. I had some things that just could not be saved, for instance an antique storage trunk that visible mold colonies were infesting the interior paper lining. Other things such as clock radio/kitchen appliances/etc. I disassembled and cleaned as many parts as I could, leaving parts out in sunlight. That seemed to eradicate the mold odors in most cases, it’s a lot of work though! It’s difficult to sum up the methods for cleaning mold toxins from things. Various things need various methods. The acidity of vinegar can be useful for things that can tolerate it, I have used a spray bottle with diluted vinegar on box fans and other sturdy types of appliances that can be washed. Things that can’t be washed with water, often storing with baking soda or activated charcoal is the best thing. It seems like you have a good awareness about detoxing laundry. I find hanging things out in sunlight, if they’re fabric or something that do not have hidden areas like an appliance does, cleans them faster and easier than anything else. I was soaking some clothing items in changes of dishsoapy or detergent water for many weeks, they still reeked of mold, then I hung them outside for a few days and the mold smells vanished.
