http://santodaimecolombia.org/2013/09/02/trabalho-de-sao-miguel-valle-de-aburra-santo-daime-medellin/ For homeowners, the most important kinds of molds to know about are the four most common indoor molds: Cladosporium, Penicillium, Alternaria, and Aspergillus. Mold is happiest and grows best where conditions are warm and damp, so basements and showers are high-risk growth areas. Check out the CDC’s list of basic facts about molds here for more details.
Had exrays, small white spots in lungs, Asthma & many other symptoms. I just found a place to move. I saw a Pulmonary Special last Fri & he sent out Blood (RASP) changed inhaler & started Singulair tabs. I go back on Mon for lab results. He mentioned maybe Itraconozole. He thinks condition might be Aspergiliosis. I gave my 30 day notice on Mon. My cat is still there but can’t move her until 21 or 22 Nov. I will do the ERMI
I soaked some lengths of toilet tissue with bleach and tucked it around the door seal and left it for 24 hours. I removed the tissue and filled the liquid soap tray with bleach and put three dishwasher tablets in the powder tray and put it on the hottest wash cycle. Not a perfect result, but a lot better than it was before.
The man at the top is in trouble. The attorney general, a member of his own party, won’t defend him. There’s talk of impeachment. Republican legislators are restive and fear that he’s putting their electoral chances at risk. The exec himself remains defiant, insisting he’s the subject of political witch hunts and fake news.
Mycotoxins will not always be produced when these types of mold are present. To put it another way, the presence of mold does not necessarily mean mycotoxins are present. The conditions needed for mycotoxins to be produced are not fully understood. Further, mycotoxins can be produced by other types of molds besides Stachybotrys and these molds are not always black.
Keep a spray bottle full of white distilled vinegar in your bathroom and kitchen for quick cleaning. Personally I don’t mind the smell of vinegar but if you find it too strong and unpleasant, just add a few drops of essential oil (like lavender) and you will be able to tell the difference.
This would include carpet, dry-wall, drop-down ceiling tiles and wood paneling. When these items get wet and remain in this condition for any period of time, then the moisture weakened areas are primed for mold growth.
Hi Christina! His name is Dr Michael Rothman and he’s in Springlake, NJ. Address 1325 Warren Ave, 07762. His phone is listed as MD wellness and his phone is (732)268-7663. Brenda his nurse is very nice as is he and I don’t think he’s actually a naturopath but he believes firmly in finding out WHY you have problems and them wants to correct them…which is the only way to get well, right? He’s into nutrition, clean way of living and will prescribe meds only if absolutely necessary and appropriate which all Drs should be doing. He doesn’t take any insurance but when other stupid un informed Drs have destroyed your health, it a blessing to pay someone who actually knows what to look for, knows what labs to test, spends an 1 1/2 hrs for the first visit so you have plenty of time to talk uninterrupted and then gets it right. I’m not trying to paint him as a God, but right now in my book….he’s close! I had been suffering for close to 4yrs, was operated on 3x’s for nothing, many, many meds, labeled as a complainer with phychiatric problems who they just wanted to medicate with anti depressants and then to hear your not crazy and to see the lab results..IT MADE MY DAY and I’ve contacted a few of those “other Drs” to TELL them how far off the mark with what they did to me they were and it’s satisfying to see their faces when they look at the lab reports and I tell them what they should have done instead. I really think God I ended up in his office because I still wouldn’t have any answers and I’d still be living in this sick house not knowing any better. I’m trying now to find a clean place to rent, at least for a yr but I have money problems and also 8 cats…so it’s not easy but somehow it will work out…I hope! Good luck and if you have any questions for me, don’t hesitate to ask!
People with CIRS have genetic mutations that make them unable to remove the biotoxins that have accumulated in their bodies. This means that getting away from the biotoxins may stop them from building up further, but it will not remove them.
Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all. Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, molds can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. People with mold allergies may have more severe reactions. Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may get serious infections in their lungs when they are exposed to mold. These people should stay away from areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas.
It is a growth of small organisms, particularly Strachybotrys chartarun and Strachybotys astra, which are extremely dangerous to younger kids, babies, and older people, and have been linked to many health problems, including respiratory problems like bronchitis and asthma. Pets can also develop rashes and other issues when exposed.
“An acute and chronic, systemic inflammatory response syndrome acquired following exposure to the interior environment of a water-damaged building with resident toxigenic organisms, including, but not limited to fungi, bacteria, actinomycetes and mycobacteria as well as inflammagens such as endotoxins, beta glucans, hemolysins, proteinases, mannans and possibly spirocyclic drimanes; as well as volatile organic compounds.
This past week I was helping my brother clean an apartment he just moved into and when I was moving furniture I noticed that one of the window sills in a bedroom had some discoloration on it. At first, I wasn’t sure what it was and began to just wipe it with a cloth. But, then I realized it wasn’t coming off so I shined a bright light on it and realized it was mold! Yuck! Mold is toxic, something that you don’t want to be near, touch or breath in!

http://cica.org.ck/vaianas-2/?unapproved=6685 Remember, mold is naturally occurring. It may return. To tackle a few random spots of a fresh resurgence, it’s not necessary to don coveralls. Instead, grab a mask, goggles, gloves, and the leftover mold-killing solution, then proceed from Step 3 onward. Armed with this information on how to remove black mold, you’ll stay on top of the household menace in the future.
If you just can’t handle the smell of vinegar (even short term), then there is another option that is odorless. I’m talking about grapefruit seed extract, which is an excellent antifungal both internally and externally. To use it on a moldy area in your home, simply combine 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract with two cups of water in a spray bottle. Shake the mixture and spray it directly on the mold  and do not rinse. (11)
Toxin-producing black mold can cause serious black mold symptoms in adults and children. It can also cause extensive damage to your home as well as your health. I hope this article helps you to better understand how to identify, prevent and completely eliminate black mold from your life in every way. Remember that the No. 1 key to black mold prevention is moisture control.
Borax: Use a ratio of 1 cup Borax to 1 gallon water. Hot water will dissolve the Borax quicker. Although Borax doesn’t give off toxic fumes, it is less effective on carpets. It is recommended on hard, flat surfaces like tiles. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and spray. Let it sit for a few minutes, then use a scrubbing brush or cloth to wipe the mold away. There’s no need to rinse.
When you’re sure the mold has been eliminated, seal the wood surfaces with pigmented shellac like BIN or an oil-based primer like KILZ. Repaint cleaned wall surfaces with a regular latex paint that contains a mildewcide to help stop future mold growth. Then install new insulation and drywall and nail the trim back on. And keep in mind that if the moisture returns, mold will return.
Black mold appears in damp, dark areas, and can spread quickly if not taken care of. Luckily, you can clean it with cleaning detergents, such as borax or bleach, or natural solutions, such as white vinegar or tea tree oil. Wear protective gloves and goggles when cleaning the mold, and throw out any items that are completely contaminated. In extreme cases, you may have to call a professional to evaluate and eliminate the black mold.
P. polycephalum is not only a great navigator and good forward thinker, so to speak—it is also a healthy eater. Slime molds survive best on a diet comprising two thirds protein and one third carbohydrates. Audrey Dussutour of the University of Paul Sabatier in France placed slime molds in the center of a clock face of 11 different pieces of food, each with a unique ratio of proteins and carbohydrates. When presented with this circular menu, slime molds consistently glommed onto the piece of food with optimal balance of nutrients.
Specific test results vary across patients, and so the knowledge of someone experienced in the illness is needed to interpret the results. The cost is relatively high, though insurance in some cases may cover the cost.
I have this model too and recently noticed the mold. Maybe I need to go back to the powder detergent and stop using the pods. I stuffed rags soaked with Clorox all around the gasket and left it for two days. It is better, but still there. This is after I tried running two cycles with Simple Green and scrubbing the gasket with Clorox and a brush. I am now leaving the door open and hoping it helps.
I stay on the 3rd floor of these apts my girlfriend and I jus moved to and notice black mold in the ceiling wash room near the back side of the shower wall. It’s a nice size and Ive been really going thru all the symptoms. We have told maintenance on 3 different occasions but still they haven’t fixed it and we been here goin on 3 months. Blueair Sense filters. Blueair filters use “HEPASilent Technology,” which combines electrostatic and mechanical filtration to capture 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns in size. We use these in bedrooms and my home office because they are smaller, quieter, and more energy efficient than the IQAir HealthProPlus units.
The same is true in parts of Brooklyn, where mold overgrowth has reportedly worsened in the years since Hurricane Sandy. In the Red Hook neighborhood, a community report last October found that a still-growing number of residents were living in moldy apartments.
IVE TRIED THIS BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR SOLUTION, BUT IT DIDNT WORK VERY WELL. MAYBE I WILL JUST HAVE TO REPLACE THE TILES OR PAINT IT? THE FIRST THING IVE NOTICED WHEN I SEE THE PHOTO/VIDEO OF MELISSA WERE HER BOOBS!
Mold growing in homes and buildings, whether it is Stachybotrys chartarum (Stachybotrys atra) or other molds, indicates that there is a problem with water or moisture. This is the first problem that needs to be addressed. Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Mold in or under carpets typically requires that the carpets be removed. Once mold starts to grow in insulation or wallboard, the only way to deal with the problem is by removal and replacement. We do not believe that one needs to take any different precautions with Stachybotrys chartarum (Stachybotrys atra), than with other molds. In areas where flooding has occurred, prompt drying out of materials and cleaning of walls and other flood-damaged items with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water is necessary to prevent mold growth. Never mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners. If a home has been flooded, it also may be contaminated with sewage. (See: After a Hurricane or Flood: Cleanup of Flood Water) Moldy items should be removed from living areas.
Not true!! The average doctors are not aware that micro toxins can form from black mold events attacking your immune system for years! Many disorders like copd , chronic fatigue , neuropathy, random pain can be caused by the neurotoxins from black mold.
The awareness of toxic mold’s effect on human health has increased dramatically over the past few years. But mold is only one of the many biotoxins found in water-damaged buildings, and the illness caused by exposure to these toxins is much more complex than most clinicians and patients assume.
Toxic black mold is a greenish-black gelatinous mold. It is usually slimy because of a wet layer on the top. However if a toxic black mold colony’s water source runs out it can appear dry and powdery.
If you can afford to built your own home, build with hemp crete or jet board. It does not get mold, or pests and takes much longer to burn if a fire breaks out. Magnacrete, another board, does not burn at all. It costs about $7 more a board than the formaldehyde toxic board but why make a home 10 times more toxic than the air outside by using such poisonous wood to make your home with? Also check with what the dry wall is made with. Some is made from the toxic waste of fertilizer production waste! Scary.
Remove mold with detergent. This method is effective on glass, tile and other nonporous surfaces. It doesn’t kill the mold, but mixing soap and water and using it to scrub the mold away is just as effective on nonporous surfaces.
This fungus requires and thrives off moisture to survive. It will often appear as slimy and features a dark greenish-black(sometimes gray) coloration to it that is not often found as with other species and groups of this fungi.
NOSING AROUND: The spindly orange vine known as dodder (Cuscuta pentagona) is a parasitic plant. Time-lapse video reveals that a dodder seedling twirls through the air, sniffing volatile chemicals released by neighboring plants in search of a suitable host. When it finds one, dodder entwines its victim and inserts nozzles into the host’s stem, siphoning of vital nutrients. Silvae, Wikimedia Commons
Another helpful intervention is to use air filters and purifiers/sanitizers. I will write an article discussing them in more detail soon. For now, I will tell you what I use and recommend to my patients:
Hello, Sara. I’ve been sick for about a month and a half as has my mother. We also live in Louisville, KY. I was wondering if you have found a specialist close in this field so we could see them as well.
I also live in the SF Bay Area and have been searching for a knowledgable specialist to come check out my new apartment (just recently had to move as ERMI score was too high). Can you please share who you found in this area?
In 2004 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; with asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition. The IOM also found limited or suggestive evidence linking indoor mold exposure and respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children.
It’s not always necessary to use the strongest chemical in the house to get rid of black mold. Furthermore, there are many green cleaning natural alternatives that accomplish killing mold at the root level.
The documented dangers of excessive mold exposure are many. Guidelines issued by the World Health Organization note that living or working amid mold is associated with respiratory symptoms, allergies, asthma, and immunological reactions. The document cites a wide array of “inflammatory and toxic responses after exposure to microorganisms isolated from damp buildings, including their spores, metabolites, and components,” as well as evidence that mold exposure can increase risks of rare conditions like hypersensitivity pneumonitis, allergic alveolitis, and chronic sinusitis.
Going green with tea tree oil is not as cheap as using bleach or ammonia. However, a small amount of tea tree oil will go very far in effectively getting rid of black mold. And, the environment and your lungs will thank you for it!
Terra…Google “paradigm change me.com” what do I do with my stuff? This will explain everything to you and what should go and why. It also has other good articals you can click on. I’m throwing everything out except my clothes and you have to wash all of them in ammonia in the washing machine. I’m bath9ing my cats in ammonia/water as well cuz it’s the only substance known to kill both mold and mycotoxins and is even safe to bath infants in. I’ll be bathing in it as well every night for 20mins once I move out of this sick house. Good luck!
One great blog suggested the following, which worked like a miracle! Here’s the clean picture, after the work was done. I wish I had a complete “nasty” picture of it all from before the cleaning, but I neglected to take one. The difference is remarkable.
How Do I Get Rid of Mold? It is impossible to get rid of all mold and mold spores indoors. Mold spores will not grow if moisture is not present. Indoor mold growth can and should be prevented or controlled by controlling moisture indoors.

I was diagnosed with fybromyalgia about 15 years ago. I know on several occasions I was exposed to black mold. I’ve a lot so been reading some on the fact that some have been misdiagnosed with fybro, when it was black mold desease. I have asked my family Dr group 4 times to be tested, reading that the symptoms are extremely similar. They insist that as long as I am no longer exposed, there is no need to test. True?
Our family of 11 lost our home to toxic mold. It took us 8 years to make the connection. We vacated the home in 2008 and slowly got our lives back thanks to radical lifestyle changes. Thanks for spreading the word.
Allergic reactions to mold are the most common health effects of mold and are therefore the greatest health risk related to mold. Allergic reactions may happen immediately or develop after a period of time following exposure. Both growing mold and mold spores may lead to allergic reactions. Symptoms and signs of mold allergy may include
The mold remediation industry is not well regulated in most states. Therefore, it is very easy for a customer to be taken advantage of. If you do need a professional remediation, do your homework and protect yourself.

http://grazynaauguscik.com/tag/auguscik/page/2/ Grapefruit seed extract is similar to tea tree oil in that it is an expensive but very effective natural mold killer. The advantage of grapefruit seed extract over tea tree oil however is that it has almost no odor. Like tea tree oil you can buy grape fruit seed extract from most health food stores.
You should also aim to keep humidity down in your home — ideally, not higher than 50 percent. If humidity is a problem where you live, then a dehumidifier can be helpful. This is especially important when the weather is humid outdoors. In warmer months, an air conditioner can help to keep the humidity down.
Toxic black mold or black mold is a name commonly used for Stachybotrys chartarum. It is one of the most infamous toxic molds because it can grow in houses and is extremely dangerous to humans. Stachybotrys is known as a toxic mold because it produces toxins called mycotoxins.
One issue is whether to undertake environmental assessments for the presence of mold or other airborne substances found in damp homes, schools, and workplaces. If someone does develop respiratory conditions in a given location only, an environmental assessment may be indicated if there are no other known triggers. These conditions include asthma (either newly diagnosed or worsening of existing asthma), the lung conditions called interstitial lung disease and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, sarcoidosis, and recurring cold-like symptoms, sinus infections, and hoarseness.2
MOLECULAR MEMORY: Common bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), also known as “winter wheat,” only flowers and makes grain following a cold winter. If winter snows do not blanket the sprouts, they never flower. But if prior to planting, farmers keep the seeds in the freezer for a while, then the sprouts will flower even in the absence of snow. In other words, the plants remember their exposure to the cold. How do they encode this memory? The cold induces characteristic changes in the pattern of molecules hitched to DNA, a process known as epigenetics that in turn modifies gene expression. Bluemoose, Wikimedia Commons
We had a huge leak into our house several years ago as we live on the east coast and we’re hit by a few storms in a row leaving lb after lb of ice on the roof which finally gave in. The water damage affected the entire upstairs which is our whole living space. We had people come in and rip everything out from most walls, all of the bathroom down to just the like the tub and toilet, the kitchen cabinets and ceramic tile floor, I mean we had to start all over with a 24k insurance check. It didn’t affect the bedroom to their knowledge but when they put those HUGE humidifiers in 4 of the rooms except the bedroom I came down with a respiratory illness and had complete laryngitis for 4-5 months. That’s a long time to go with out speaking. And I was in the house almost the whole time this was going on with my pets and self closed off in the bedroom with an air purifier. But I think being in the house was the worse idea possible but I was on bedrest from an injury and out on FMLA. I’m wondering if they didn’t do a proper job with getting the water out or may have opened a can of worms bc I my health has declined ever since, making me at home 90% of the time and I’ve been through so many tests and they can’t find out what’s wrong. After reading this article I am seriously going to make an appointment with my dr and if it’s out of his leaguests he needs to point me in the best direction!! I mean can your primary order the specific tests needed or do I need a specialist, or if he orders the proper tests and thing come back abnormal is that when he would sent me to a specialist? And just wondering for those who have had their house tested around how much could that approximately cost? And say the previous owner knee about this would they have needed to disclose this when I bought the house, or would I have had to specifically had to ask? Thank you
Step 3: Dilute half a gallon of the peroxide to 5% strength in a plastic bucket or small WATERPROOF trash can. You don’t want to spill this stuff. To get a 5% strength, add 4 or 5 times the volume of water to the strong peroxide.
The so-called first-generation antihistamines include diphenhydramine (Benadryl), chlorpheniramine (Chlortrimaton), dimenhydrinate (Dramamine), brompheniramine (Dimetapp and others), clemastine fumarate (Tavist, Allerhist), and dexbrompheniramine (Drixoral).
Often CIRS is part of the picture but not the whole picture, in our experience. Unfortunately mold is not always visible, so the fact that you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Starting with an ERMI test from Mycometrics is typically what we recommend. It can’t rule in/out mold with 100% certainty, but it’s a good initial screen.
The advantage of using grapefruit seed extract is that it is odorless. It is also expensive and can be bought at most health food stores or online. Grapefruit seed extract will also disinfect and deodorize the area.
If mold remains even after scrubbing in step 4, it’s time to take reach for the sandpaper. When considering how to remove mold from wood, an abrasive might not seem like the obvious solution. It may seem counterintuitive, but sanding is the only way to reach the mold deep within the wood. Work the sandpaper slowly around the affected area until you see no more signs of mold. After sanding, it’s a good idea to refinish the wood, not only for appearances’ sake, but also to prevent a future outbreak. Finally, get rid of all the rags and such that came into contact with the mold, and start trying to figure out how to limit the amount of moisture present in the area where you’ve been working.
I would of never known you could use baking soda after, I really need to try that, we have a icky mold spot in the basement, that i keep spraying with vinegar and tea tree, but it just isn’t going away all the way.
Mold is everywhere. It’s a type of fungus that grows from tiny spores that float in the air. It can grow almost anywhere that spores land and find moisture and a comfortable temperature, between 40 and 100 degrees F. Typically that includes about every damp place in your home.
For every one cup of water the spray bottle holds, add a teaspoon of either tea tree oil or grapefruit seed extract. Both oils have a long shelf life, so as long as the spray bottle can be turned to an “off” position for air-tightness, the solution will last for at least a year.
Step 7: Allow the paper towels to thoroughly dry out to the point where they start falling off the walls. Peel them off, using your gloves if there is any dampness in the towels. You are done! Try taking some before and after pictures to remind yourself how effective this procedure is. You can use chlorine bleach instead of peroxide, it just smells way worse for a long time. Note- the strong peroxide puts out a lot of oxygen and ozone in the air. Use plenty of ventilation as the ozone can sting your eyes.
Thank-you and glad to help! Hay fever (allergic rhinitis) is an irritation of the nose caused by pollen and is associated with the following allergic symptoms: nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, eye and nose itching, and tearing eyes. Avoidance of known allergens is the recommended treatment, but if this is not possible, antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays may help alleviate symptoms.
Regarding the methods for cleaning the air in the home, there are some resources out there that claim that certain plants can help clean the air (e.g. http://complete-health-and-happiness.com/houseplants-clean-air-basically-impossible-kill/?t=DM)
“I’m still surprised it didn’t receive more attention from the scientific community, she said in a recent interview. “The city was rife with mold; everything organic decayed. A few people did some very superficial spore counts and they were off the scale, but at the time almost no one studied it because the focus was elsewhere. So I did my own study.”
You can see a list of the recommended tests, as well as download a PDF (the “lab orders” document) which lists the CPT codes and appropriate lab for each test, here: http://www.survivingmold.com/diagnosis
Reality: Not so, says the U.S. Department of Energy: “Vapor barriers only retard moisture due to diffusion, while most moisture enters walls either through fluid capillary action or as water vapor through air leaks.” There is a lot of confusion among homeowners and contractors about vapor barriers (a layer with a permeability rating of 0.1 perm or less) and vapor retarders (a layer with permeability greater than 0.1 perm but less than or equal to 1 perm). Both slow the transmission of vapor through a building assembly, but their effectiveness depends a lot on your climate zone. The prime consideration for homeowners is the structure’s ability to dry out, which leads many experts to question whether vapor barriers are necessary at all.
Experts recommend that if you have toxic black mold in your home then it’s best to move to temporary accommodation until it has been removed, especially if you are suffering toxic symptoms. Ideally you should only return to your home after a professional toxic black mold removal service has completely fixed the problem. There is also a possibility that belongings you take with you when you move can continue to make you sick if they contain mycotoxins from the toxic black mold.
Dispose of the coveralls and paper towel in a plastic bag, which you should tightly seal before taking out with the trash. Wash soiled rags and the nylon scrubber in hot water, or throw them away with the coveralls and paper towel as an extra precaution.
My home has been damaged by the May 20th and May 31st tornados in Moore, OK. I did not want to use Clorox due to fumes and water supply. Some of your alternative solutions were new to me such as the Tea Tree Oil and Grapefruit extract. Being specific about mixing amounts helps me use my first thoughts of Vinegar or Hydrogen Pyroxide which I have on hand. I have a horrible area in one of my sheds and really appreciate the advise. Thank You. 🙂
When speaking to black mold, there is no single one group or species of mold that defines the phrase “black or toxic mold”. Instead, several classes of molds are more commonly referred to as toxic molds and here are a few of them:
This carpet is completely biodegradable since it’s made with 100-percent natural, raw materials. Hemp is nature’s strongest and most durable fiber. The carpet is naturally pigmented, rather than dyed with harsh chemicals. The adhesive used is made from natural rubber and the backing is made from jute, both of which are robust and biodegradable.
Many different types of molds can grow on food. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the types of mold that can be found in foods include Alternaria, Aspergillus, Botrytis, Cladosporium, Fusarium, Geotrichum, Monilia, Manoscus, Mortierella, Mucor, Neurospora, Oidium, Oosproa, Penicillium, Rhizopus, and Thamnidium. Certain kinds of cheeses are made with mold, like brie, gorgonzola, stilton, roquefort, and camembert. The mold that is part of the food manufacturing process is considered to be safe and does not pose health risks. It is also normal for dry-cured country ham and hard salami to have surface mold. The USDA has a helpful online resource that can show you which molds in food are safe and how to handle moldy foods.
In many cases, says the Resilient Floor Covering Institute, new flooring can be successfully installed over the existing. For material containing 1 percent asbestos that is friable — so damaged that it crumbles in your hand — it’s best to hire government-certified asbestos contractors to remove or encapsulate it.
I live in a housing complex and we have mold I clean the walls in the shower with Bleach. My Husband was a maintenance worker here and he did alot of repairs in the job Tearing down walls etc, He now has memory problems confusion nervousness etc. they say it is stages of Alzheimer’s. I am always tired and we at home seem very irritable can our symptoms be related to the mold? also can we get an air purifier? will that help? what can we use at home to help with the air quality? I always have our ac’s on on fan cycle.
If you have a suspended type ceiling and see small dimples take shape around the fasteners, then your ceiling is giving way to gravity and ready to collapse. And, if you see any bubbles appearing in the drywall, then you may have pooled water on the other side (you can punch a nail through the drywall to allow the standing water to drain into a container).
Any mold professional should be able to explain Mold Remediation in plain English. If a contractor is unable to explain the basic processes and steps of mold remediation and mold removal in layman’s terms, be very wary! If someone tries to complicate and confuse you about the process and scare you into hiring them, walk away and say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” There are good honest mold removal and mold remediation companies (like Moldman!) out there as long as you are careful, educate yourself about mold remediation, and get multiple estimates.
Aspergillus niger * Aspergillus niger can be found in environments where there is very little nutritional value for it to grow. However, it is abundant throughout our environment among the many species of molds.
Sounds like you completely misunderstood my comment Brian. I am not dismissing or criticizing anything at all in the article. As the article was written almost 2 years ago I was asking Chris if he was still currently using these same models or if since writing, he had possibly considered some others since then. Sorry for any confusion caused. Have a great day!
Stachybotrys (/ˌstækiˈbɒtrɪs/) is a genus of molds, hyphomycetes or asexually reproducing, filamentous fungi. Historically, it was considered closely related to the genus Memnoniella,[1][2] because the spores are produced in slimy heads rather than in dry chains. Recently, the synonymy of the two genera is generally accepted.[3] Most Stachybotrys species inhabit materials rich in cellulose. The genus has a widespread distribution, and contains about 50 species.[4] The name comes from the Greek words σταχυς stakhus (ear of grain, stalk, stick; metaphorically, progeny) and βότρυς botrus (cluster or bunch as in grapes, trusses).
There are several molds that look similar to toxic black mold. If you find what you think might be Stachybotrys the only way you can tell for sure is to have a mold expert look at a sample under a microscope.

source Some molds also produce mycotoxins that can pose serious health risks to humans and animals. Some studies claim that exposure to high levels of mycotoxins can lead to neurological problems and in some cases, death.[16] Prolonged exposure, e.g. daily home exposure, may be particularly harmful. Research on the health impacts of mold has not been conclusive.[17] The term “toxic mold” refers to molds that produce mycotoxins, such as Stachybotrys chartarum, and not to all molds in general.[18]
Biomarkers consistent with the neuroimmune, vascular, and endocrine abnormalities that characterize CIRS. If you have a history consistent with biotoxin exposure, a susceptible genotype, and an abnormal VCS test, you are very likely to show the laboratory abnormalities seen in CIRS. Major and minor criteria are a work in progress.
You probably don’t need to have your air ducts cleaned unless there is mold growing inside, they are infested with vermin or they are excessively clogged with debris. Duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association cautions consumers against air duct cleaning companies that make sweeping claims about health benefits of their services and/or are not upfront about fees.
I have four 16″ floor fans going pretty much 24/7- 2 in living room area and one each in the 2 bedrooms. I put an 8″ fan on the floor just outside the bathroom door and it runs consistently. No more humidity there now.
Please don’t lose hope. The best thing you can do right now is to leave even if for a week or 2 the place with the problem and see if you begin things feel better. If you do then you know is the mold and you will do anything including sleeping in your car or a tent to allow your body some reprieve so it can begin to heal until you can find a place with minimal or no mold at all. I pray God gives you the strength, the means attend wisdom to begin a journey of healing and rest. May the Lord bless you in Jesus’ name.
Dr Michael Rothman on Warren Ave, Springlake, Nj. You can look him up and it comes as MD wellness. I thought he was a naturopath but he isn’t. He believes in natural medicine 1st and if needed then he’ll prescribe meds but likes to stay with natural substances rather then synthetic. If it weren’t for him I wouldn’t know why I’m so sick for the past 4yrs and I wouldn’t know I had to vacate the house….which I’m working on now but with limited money it’s been hard. Hope this helps!

Red rice yeast is a product of the mold Monascus purpureus grown on rice, and is common in Asian diets. The yeast contains several compounds collectively known as monacolins, which are known to inhibit cholesterol synthesis.[10] A study has shown that red rice yeast used as a dietary supplement, combined with fish oil and healthy lifestyle changes, may help reduce “bad” cholesterol as effectively as certain commercial statin drugs.[11]

Even if you can’t see any mold or other allergens in your home, they could still be there, lurking in hard to reach corners or growing behind walls. All the while, releasing spores and particulates that can cause a range of chronic health problems including asthma and headaches.
I have a daughter who lives in an apartment that has mold growing right outside the AV air ducts. How do we get the air ducts cleaned? The owners are a large corporation and all they did was paint over the old with kilz (sp?). She’s been unable to reach anybody who is willing to help because she isn’t the owner of the property. (I’ve used hot soapy water with about 1/3 white vinegar on mold growing in my house and scrubbed all of it off over a year ago and it still hasn’t come back!). So we know how to remove it from the walls, But how do we get it out of the ducts ? And how do we get the pros to return ou r calls?
Indoor mold may be unsightly and smelly, but the potential problems are more serious than that. By definition, actively-growing mold damages the material it lives on, thereby impairing structural integrity. In addition, mold is associated with some untoward health effects in humans, including allergies and infections. (Some health effects attributed to mold may in fact be caused by bacteria, dust mites, etc., found in mold-colonized environments. So-called “toxic mold” has been claimed as the cause of “toxic mold disease”; this syndrome remains undefined and “toxic mold” as a cause remains unproven. “Toxic mold” is also unproven as a cause of the various symptoms associated with “sick building syndrome”.) Mold growth in homes, schools, and businesses should be eliminated for the sake of human health, structural integrity, and quality of life. Cleaning up small amounts of mold can be done by homeowners. Eliminating mold from large areas requires expertise and protection both for the removal specialists and occupants of the affected space.
Mildewcide in paint is usually effective for controlling surface mold in damp rooms like bathrooms and outside in shady areas. Many paints already have mildewcide in them. Check with your paint dealer to be sure. You can add mildewcide, although you might void the paint warranty.
Chris, your podcast and several others have added so much value to my life and are helping me overcome chronic illness. I became aware of Dr. Shoemaker’s work in April 2015 when it suddenly hit me after listening to Dave Asprey’s podcast and being indoors on a rainy day that the illness I was suffering from was mold. (Maybe Lyme too.) I requested several tests from my doctor. I failed an online VCS test. I was hitting potholes because I couldn’t see them. I am realizing many people labeled with mental illness are suffering from mold-related sickness too. I was suicidal. It started with what I believe was exposure to Stachybotris. Mary Ackerley, integrative psychiatrist has a great article about it. http://www.survivingmold.com/community/mary-ackerley-the-brain-on-fire-the-role-of-toxic-mold-in-triggering-psychiatric-symptoms I am beginning recovery. Also I realized that connection between mycotoxins, glutamine and histamines. Stopping high histamine foods is also helping. You contribute so much to the community and are helping me tremendously. Bravo!
Mold professionals use “negative air” containment, which is created by positioning blower fans and using air pressure machines to bring clean air into the contaminated space and push contaminated air outside the home.
Wear a respirator or a facemask rated for black mold spore protection, and cover arms, legs and hands to avoid contact with mold spores. Use soap and a sponge to remove visible mold. If the moldy area is dry, lightly spray with water, as this will reduce the incidence of airborne mold spores during cleaning. Next, use commercial black mold removal products, which can be found in most hardware or home repair stores, to disinfect the moldy areas, in addition to any adjacent areas. If you use bleach, make sure it won’t discolor the material or surface. Place all sponges, equipment and other materials used in cleaning in a heavy duty garbage bag, and if possible, remove the bag through an nearby exit as opposed to the main house, to avoid distributing mold spores.
If you choose to do the inspection yourself you need to look into hidden areas like inside of wall cavities. Toxic black mold needs a lot of water to grow so especially check spots where there could have been water leaks.
To make this flooring, about one third of the cork-oak tree’s trunk is stripped — the tree is left undamaged and quickly regenerates new bark. Cork flooring is durable, yet it is much softer than standard hardwood flooring and it’s easy to install with a tongue-and-grove locking system. In this kitchen, two colors of cork are used to create a unique pattern.
If you have a front load washer, the drainage holes may be near the seal on the door. Consider prying back the seal to see if a small laundry item like a sock has gotten stuck behind the seal. If this happens, the item can mold. (This happened to a commenter on one of our other guides.)
Generally, it is not necessary to identify the species of mold growing in a residence, and CDC does not recommend routine sampling for molds. Current evidence indicates that allergies are the type of diseases most often associated with molds. Since the reaction of individuals can vary greatly either because of the person’s susceptibility or type and amount of mold present, sampling and culturing are not reliable in determining your health risk. If you are susceptible to mold and mold is seen or smelled, there is a potential health risk; therefore, no matter what type of mold is present, you should arrange for its removal. Furthermore, reliable sampling for mold can be expensive, and standards for judging what is and what is not an acceptable or tolerable quantity of mold have not been established.
After mold is physically removed from its source, the air should be cleaned of airborne mold spores using HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) air scrubbers and air exchange (i.e. replacing dirty moldy air with clean fresh air through simple ventilation or more sophisticated negative air controls for bigger jobs)
I had tried a few store bought sprays etc. but no joy, now I will use your safer alternative tips. Many thanks I look forward to being able to open my front door without embarrassment in the near future.
Molds are a large and taxonomically diverse number of fungal species in which the growth of hyphae results in discoloration and a fuzzy appearance, especially on food.[3] The network of these tubular branching hyphae, called a mycelium, is considered a single organism. The hyphae are generally transparent, so the mycelium appears like very fine, fluffy white threads over the surface. Cross-walls (septa) may delimit connected compartments along the hyphae, each containing one or multiple, genetically identical nuclei. The dusty texture of many molds is caused by profuse production of asexual spores (conidia) formed by differentiation at the ends of hyphae. The mode of formation and shape of these spores is traditionally used to classify molds.[4] Many of these spores are colored, making the fungus much more obvious to the human eye at this stage in its life-cycle.
So as we can see from the above, the term Black Mold and its typical association is usually completely misunderstood. If you have visible mold or a suspected mold problem, our advice is always the same regardless of the color of the mold: Get rid of the mold. Whether you decide to personally get rid of the mold or hire a professional like Moldman to do so, be very careful and make sure currently accepted Mold Removal and Mold Remediation Principles and protocol are followed.
If you use the recommended ratio of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water, then there should be no need for an additional rinsing of the drywall. Keep the area well-ventilated and have a fan on the cleaned area. It will dry without issue. However, using a stain-blocking primer prior to repainting is highly recommended.

Purchase Tramadol Cod Fedex Stachybotrys (/ˌstækiˈbɒtrɪs/) is a genus of molds, hyphomycetes or asexually reproducing, filamentous fungi.
Quick and easy to install, these carpet tiles are made from 80 percent post-consumer recycled poly fiber. They are stain-repellent and won’t trap dirt like traditional carpets, thereby reducing allergens in the air. But, if the squares do become dirty, you can just replace the individual squares and not the entire carpet.

http://aneking.com/steak-shack-steaks-never-higher/ You should also take commonsense precautions when it comes to electricity. All electrical outlets and switches should be covered by faceplates. Use the right light bulbs in all lamps and lights. Check the wattage requirements by looking inside the fixture.
Fix leaks immediately. Leaks are a huge source of moisture problems in homes, and the extra moisture creates a prime environment for mold to grow. You can still prevent mold even if a leak occurs, but you do have to act quickly to fix the leak and dry the area. Leaks to look out for include:[16]
I had a walk in closet full of mold, I used borax and a scrub brush to remove it,you could see the crystals it left behind on the shelf inside there. This was for a elderly woman. I liked the fact it emitted no fumes and was easy to administer(spray bottle) and it also got rid of the modly smell.
Your favorite part of the day may be snuggling up to your fur baby, but pet dander traps allergens — which means you’re inviting those allergens to your bed. If you can’t resist the cuddles, then you should completely shave your dog. Just kidding — just be sure to bathe them once a week.
I had excellent results with this product when I had some recent water and mold issues in my basement. Its plant friendly which is awesome for restoring decks and garages with vegetation nearby and does not emit any harmful odors or harsh fumes.
I too am sick from mold in my previous rental home. I didn’t know the mold was there until I moved our storage out of a big walk in closet. I don’t know what kind of mold it was because the landlord went in and bleached the wall as soon as I got our things out and someone else moved right in. I have been sick for 7 months and can’t find any doctors in WY or Montana that have a clue how to even test me for it. I am trying a starvation diet that I found online. I just am at wits end trying to find help and also going broke.
Bleach – Bleach is effective at killing mould, but it will also fade any colours. So use bleach only on whites or colourfast clothes, as a pre-soak or scrubbed directly onto the mould itself. Always follow the product instructions, wear rubber gloves, and work in a well-ventilated area away from any children, as bleach fumes can be strong! And, remember to store bleach in a secure cupboard out of the reach of children or pets. (Use biocides safely. Always read the label and product information before use.)
When throwing out carpets, tiles, boards or other materials that have black mold on them, be sure to place them in heavy-duty trash bags. Double bagging the items can help even more. Do not carry the bags through the house; instead, toss them out a window so there is no chance of spreading black mold spores to any other areas of the house.
Borax is a popular chemical used in many household products such as fungicides, herbicides and as a household cleaner. It deodorizes, cleans and disinfects – making it a really good choice to help fight off and kill black mold.
This may seem like scientific hair-splitting to an average person who simply wants to live and work in nuisance-free environments. Whether or not scientists agree on the cause of illnesses that might occur in damp places, or even the definition of dampness, there are abundant reasons to keep indoor environments clean and dry. This process begins with determining the source(s) of excess moisture, taking necessary steps to eliminate those sources, getting rid of mold that may already be in place, and keeping the area dry afterwards to minimize the potential for further growth of mold.
I’m still researching the difference between these filters, but one of the big advantages of the IQAir seems to be that it filters particles as small as 0.003 microns. This is 10 times smaller than a virus. Given that a lot of the most harmful particles are ultrafine, this may be a significant advantage over the Blueair, which only filters particles as small as 0.1 microns. But this is not my area of expertise and I am still learning more.
Note that identification of specific mold spores is not necessary when cleaning up indoor mold colonies. It may or may not be useful when treating health effects of mold exposure, depending on the circumstances. In any case, the role of testing for indoor mold is undefined, because as yet there are no standards for interpreting these tests.6
When mold spores drop on places where there is excessive moisture, such as where leakage may have occurred in roofs, pipes, walls, plant pots, or where there has been flooding, they will grow. Many building materials provide suitable nutrients that encourage mold to grow. Wet cellulose materials, including paper and paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, wood, and wood products, are particularly conducive for the growth of some molds. Other materials such as dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation materials, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery, commonly support mold growth.
15 years wading through chronic conditions the best I can. What are some better-than-nothing air purifier options for the majority of us that have limited budgets? Say under $200? I appreciate the functional medicine approach, but it would be great if practioners included cheaper alternatives, acknowledging many of us don’t have the choice to choose expensive tests and gadgets.
Toxic black mold can be costly to remove, and black mold exposure and black mold poisoning can cause a wide range of health problems, some of them severe. Understanding black mold symptoms and health effects can help you and your family identify these indicators and take swift action to protect your health and your home.
Standards for judging what is an acceptable, tolerable or normal quantity of mold have not been established. If you do decide to pay for environmental sampling for molds, before the work starts, you should ask the consultants who will do the work to establish criteria for interpreting the test results. They should tell you in advance what they will do or what recommendations they will make based on the sampling results. The results of samples taken in your unique situation cannot be interpreted without physical inspection of the contaminated area or without considering the building’s characteristics and the factors that led to the present condition.
Often enough, many mold killing products will have ammonia already in them. Be extra cautious to follow the directions on the label to the letter and ensure that the cleanser is never mixed with bleach (in part or whole)!
I dealt with an awful black mold experience in an old apartment. I had no clue what was making me so sick for so long. Doctors kept implying nothing was wrong with me. I even had a pulmonologist tell me what I really need was a psychiatrist.
Just a reminder that Chris doesn’t determine the price of the air filters he recommends. His only job is to tell the truth as he knows it. Don’t shoot the messenger or you will no longer receive the message.
A link between other adverse health effects, such as acute idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage among infants, memory loss, or lethargy, and molds, including the mold Stachybotrys chartarum (Stachybotrys atra), has not been proven. Further studies are needed to find out what causes acute idiopathic hemorrhage and other adverse health effects.
For instance, a combination of baking soda and vinegar may be just the ticket for getting rid of mold in damp clothing. If the clothing is sitting in a dark and poorly ventilated laundry room, then the conditions could be ripe for mold and mildew to develop.
Wear personal protective equipment. Mold exposure can cause upper respiratory illness, and the cleaners you use to kill the mold may also be damaging and corrosive. To protect yourself while you’re cleaning, consider wearing protective gear, including:[4]
Thanks for the tip to use ice pellets or sand to blast away mold from your basement walls! You also said that tea tree is a natural fungicide that is effective at killing black mold spores. I think it’s important to choose a mold and mildew service that tells you why you have mold in your home so that you can prevent it from happening again later on.

However, if you fail the VCS test, and/or suspect you may have CIRS, I strongly recommend finding a CIRS-aware clinician in your area. You can start with the list of clinicians that have been certified by Dr. Shoemaker on his website. There are other clinicians, like those of us at California Center for Functional Medicine, that are familiar with CIRS and are actively diagnosing and treating patients for it, but are not yet certified.
I have a Bosch front loader…already replaced the seal due to mold…it is worse than ever. I will NEVER buy another Bosch product. I was told to use All detergent as it is not petroleum-based, as opposed to Tide, which is petroleum-based. Regardless, the mold is so invasive!! I have tried everything to no avail…any help would be so appreciated.
Thank you Chris for all your great articles! I just have one question: Under bioxin’s found in water damaged buildings you mentioned Beta-glucan. My understanding of beta glucan is found in mushrooms which works as a immune modulator and is suppose to be good for our health. Does this mean anyone suffering from toxic mold issues should not consume mushrooms and/or mushroom supplements?
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), if visible mold is present on inspection, testing is usually unnecessary. There are no Environmental Protection Agency or government standards that have been established for mold or mold spore levels, so it is impossible to prove that a building or room is in compliance with any health regulations concerning mold exposure. Likewise, the CDC does not recommend routine sampling and testing of mold in the home. Tolerable or acceptable limits of mold exposure for humans have not been defined, and since individuals vary in their susceptibility to mold, testing cannot reliably predict the degree of health risks from any occurrence of mold.
Mildew is a surface type of mold that won’t damage your home’s structure. But other types of mold cause rot. Probe the suspect area with a screwdriver or other sharp tool (Photo 3). If the wood is soft or crumbles, the fungi have taken hold and rot has begun. We’ll show you how to remove mold from wood in a few steps.
Toxic black mold is a greenish-black gelatinous mold. It is usually slimy because of a wet layer on the top. However if a toxic black mold colony’s water source runs out it can appear dry and powdery.
Sinister-sounding and potentially dangerous, toxic black mold can strike fear in the heart of any homeowner. But by being able to identify black mold and understand how to prevent and control its growth, you can help to keep your home free of toxic black mold.
The National Fire Protection Association reports that of the 2,565 civilian deaths from home fires in 2009, almost two-thirds (63 percent) involved homes with non-working or non-existent smoke alarms. New code requires smoke alarms in every room, bedrooms being of most importance.
Some of the mold on the surface might be killed but the roots of the mold are left intact meaning the mold soon returns, leaving you in a cycle of repeated bleaching. Perhaps this is why some people believe that spraying bleach on mold doesn’t affect it but instead just bleaches its color so you can no longer see it.

signs of black mold infection | black mold on walls

enter site Black mold can be found anywhere in your home, including ceiling tiles, water-soaked wood, walls, floors, and carpet. Small leaks or plumbing problems often lead to the growth of mold because the organism thrives best in moist environments. Flooding or leakage from the rain can leave carpets damp for a prolonged period of time. If your carpet has gotten wet and did not dry thoroughly, mold may bloom and spread in that damp area.
Mold growth in homes, schools, and businesses should be eliminated for the sake of human health, structural integrity, and quality of life. Cleaning up small amounts of mold can be done by homeowners. Eliminating mold from large areas requires expertise and protection both for the removal specialists and occupants of the affected space.
In addition, in 2004 the IOM found sufficient evidence to link exposure to damp indoor environments in general to upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people and with asthma symptoms in people with asthma. The IOM also found limited or suggestive evidence linking exposure to damp indoor environments in general to shortness of breath, to respiratory illness in otherwise healthy children and to potential development of asthma in susceptible individuals. In 2009, the World Health Organization issued additional guidance, the WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality: Dampness and Mould [PDF – 2.65 MB]. Other recent studies have suggested a potential link of early mold exposure to development of asthma in some children, particularly among children who may be genetically susceptible to asthma development, and that selected interventions that improve housing conditions can reduce morbidity from asthma and respiratory allergies, but more research is needed in this regard.
The EPA encourages homeowners to have their houses tested for radon. Quick tests ($8-$25) take three to seven days and are available at hardware stores and online; a 90-day continuous monitoring assessment (about $25 for a DIY kit; $150 for a professional inspection), which accounts for peaks and lows, will produce more thorough results. If your home has more than 4 pCo/L (picocuries per liter of air), hire a professional contractor to seal cracks and to install a venting system. You can also reduce your risk by increasing natural ventilation throughout the house and not smoking.
If you have a mold problem in your home you are probably suffering several of the symptoms of mold. In fact many people suffer symptoms from mold and don’t even realize it, instead assuming their symptoms are from hay fever or a cold.
Take the appropriate safety measures to keep yourself safe. Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles and importantly, don an air mask to prevent mold spores from getting into your lungs. If you intend to use a cleaning solution that contains bleach, wear protective outerwear in order to safeguard your clothing against stains.
If you suspect a problem (or better yet, as preventive maintenance), hire professionals to inspect for damaged shingles and siding, poorly connected plumbing and leaky pipes, and other moisture problems, such as inadequate vapor barriers. Mitigate the issues as soon as possible.
In a review of studies of children from ten countries, aged six to twelve, Antova and colleagues found that mold in the household correlated with a variety of respiratory disorders, including wheezing, coughing at night, and allergic symptoms and hay fever.12
The grout cleaning was fantastic. I have spend a lot of money and tried different methods to clean the grout in my kitchen and nothing worked After using this method my floor looks like the day we installed it.
Pets are also affected by black mold. If you have black mold, look out for these symptoms in your pet: lethargy, rashes, nosebleeds, runny nose or nosebleeds and joint pain. Take your pet to see a veterinarian if you think it is experiencing problems from black mold.
Seek professional help for problems you cannot address on your own. Black mold is especially toxic and should be handled by professional. For other types of mold, if the mold extends throughout a large portion of your drywall, you will likely need professional help to fix the problem. Professional mold removal services may also be necessary if you have a damp house, if a family member suffers from respiratory problems, or if the mold continues to come back or spreads.
Unlike an air purifier which circulates a portion of a room’s indoor air and pushes it through a filter, Air Oasis’s Surface and Air Sanitizers produce safe catalytic molecules that are blown throughout the room to sanitize both the air and surfaces 24/7/365.
You are right to avoid using a water solution (beyond light misting or using a damp towel on your side of the wall for general cleaning purposes). However, I would not drill any holes or attempt to put any powdery substances behind your drywall.
However, several of these cleaning agents are highly toxic to use indoors – so be careful. And, great care should also be taken to ensure that your work area is well ventilated and a respirator and gloves are worn while killing black mold in your home.
Discard any items that are porous or if you are unable to completely remove the mold from them. It’s also a very smart idea to get rid of any carpets that have been flooded because they’re very prone to mold. Never paint or caulk over moldy surfaces.
I used a trial area of borax and baking soda. The borax treated area had even better results. I did this a few years ago and the borax treated area is still almost mould free, whilst the area I treated with baking soda has some mould on it again. However both are better than vinegar only or clove oil, and much better than using bleach. I tested it all out, as there is so much conflicting information out there. Must add, that I live in a humid tropical climate in the rain forest.

Reading all comments about the rubber seals around washing machines doors. I do have this problem with mould around the shower split doors. I have tried nearly everything, but nothing works. Would your method of cleaning the washing be any good on the rubber seals on my shower unit? Many thanks. John.
If you have a high concentration of mold, you may smell it. If you detect the typical musty odor, check for mold on damp carpets, damp walls, damp crawlspaces and wet wood under your floors, wet roof sheathing and other damp areas. Clean up these infestations right away before they get worse, and see the following photos for prevention measures on how to remove mold.
Surface molds grow in just about any damp location, such as the grout lines of a ceramic tiled shower. They’re easy to scrub away with a mold cleaner mixture of 1/2 cup bleach, 1 qt. water and a little detergent. In mold remediation, the bleach in the cleaning mixture kills the mold, and the detergent helps lift it off the surface so you can rinse it away so it won’t return as fast. You can also buy a mildew cleaner at hardware stores, paint stores and most home centers.

Mix one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide with one cup of water, put in a spray bottle or wet cloth with it and wipe on mold. Let the hydrogen peroxide stay on the surface for ten minutes or so. Wipe off with more hydrogen peroxide then use baking soda mixture to kill any remaining mold and help prevent more from returning.
I’ve come to not really believe anything anymore as it’s all about the greenbacks. This mold thing, btw, although real, is also a cash cow. Shoemaker is Mr Chaching and Chris is panting, all along for the dough.
Killing Black Mold with Ammonia has its advantages. It’s a good disinfectant and does a pretty good job of killing mold on hard, non-porous items. These items would include the bathroom sink, shower doors or kitchen counters.
In the ongoing battle against this fungi, consider your next attack on the mold with green cleaning alternatives. Here are seven ways of killing mold without creating havoc on the environment or your family.
The mold remediation industry is not well regulated in most states. Therefore, it is very easy for a customer to be taken advantage of. If you do need a professional remediation, do your homework and protect yourself.
The borax solution may slow down the expansion of the mold growth or inhibit it. However, it is a “wet” solution. And, in a environment that is already rich with humidity, the borax solution may not be the best choice.
Gary Sullivan of ‘On The House’ radio program recommends a product called Zyme-Away. Otherwise, thanks for providing this article — we have a lot of these natural products already so we’re ready to take on the mold menace!
Turn on vents and fans. To help draw mold spores out of the room and out of the house, turn on any exhaust fans in the room you’re working in. You can also position a fan in front of an open window and aim it outside. This will similarly draw mold spores out of the room and push them outside.

Before the renovation, the fourteen hospital employees developed respiratory health problems related to mold. All previously had been healthy. Four of them developed occupational asthma. One of these employees also developed pneumonia. He had a series of respiratory issues, fevers, and infections which recurred whenever he was assigned to work in this building but improved whenever he was transferred elsewhere.
Molds are fungi. Homes and structures often provide many opportunities for mold spores to grow, even in the absence of frank water leaks: seepage through foundation walls and cellar floors, dehumidifiers and air conditioners, window condensation, defective plumbing, damp bathrooms, air filters, and potted plants.4 Different types of mold spores thrive on different surfaces; for example, the “yellow slime” found on hardwood mulch won’t be found growing in a tiled bath enclosure.

Thank You. 🙂
Killing it is easy. Keeping it out is a huge job. This Old House devoted a program to it on about 1/17/17. It involved mold kill, regrading of landscaping to keep water away from the house, spray-foam insulation of the entire floor area underside, plastic sheeting welded into one piece over the soil, and ducting air from the furnace at 35 cfm into the crawlspace to reduce infiltration of moist, cold air. Expensive, but the estimated life of the job was 25 years.
The MELISA (Memory Lymphocyte Immunostimulation Assay) test is one such test. The MELISA test can detect allergies to chemicals, toxins, and mold, including toxic molds such as Aspergillus and Penicillium.
This time I used vinegar and a few drops of Tea tree Oil in a spray bottle, left it for 2 hours and VOILA it wiped off so easily I was actually amazed! Its been two months since and not a spot of mildew has returned. It truly works.
“If you have a fire, you need to know about it,” says Meri-K Appy, president of Safe Kids USA, who recommends having hard-wired, interconnected smoke alarms, “so that if fire breaks out in the basement and you’re two floors up sleeping, at the first moment the basement alarm goes off, all will go off.” Such alarms buy you precious time; it can take fewer than three minutes from the time a fire starts to the time of “flashover” – complete ignition of all gasses and combustible elements in a room.
The advantage of using grapefruit seed extract is that it is odorless. It is also expensive and can be bought at most health food stores or online. Grapefruit seed extract will also disinfect and deodorize the area.
Regularly cleaning your home with vinegar helps to prevent mold growing. You can mop your floor with vinegar each week. Regularly rinsing your bathroom walls with vinegar is also good. Vinegar is also effective for cleaning the kitchen. If you have a spray bottle of vinegar in the bathroom you can prevent mold by using it every now and again after a shower. Spray the shower curtain, walls, tiles, basin and bathtub after you finish showering.
The first VCS test is available at Dr. Shoemaker’s website, Surviving Mold, at a cost of $15. This is a Functional Visual Acuity Test (FACT) that uses a scoring algorithm developed by Drs. Shoemaker and Hudnell to determine the likelihood that a patient is being adversely affected by biotoxin exposure.

I was in a dwelling that had mold several times to show remediators around and then it started about the second or third exposure. Seems too like my short memory has suffered some since, as well as more freq urination. IH tests showed spore levels to be 10 times higher than outside. I think i have toxicosis but have not neen tested….were you happy with your test experience? Did they respond to your question about detox and duration? my exposure totaled maybe 10 hours over the course of three weeks beginning about six weeks ago. I am experimenting with coconut shell charcoal and detox teas……hoping symptoms go away. Hopefully will be seeing a dermatologist soon too. How do you feel now…symptoms still? Thanks in advance.

My make is a UITLA wash and dryer, I don’t use the dryer as I have separate one, but still have the same problem as everyone else. It must be what they put in the washing powders. I will post a comment once I have tried this test.
Toxic black mold is a greenish-black gelatinous mold. It is usually slimy because of a wet layer on the top. However if a toxic black mold colony’s water source runs out it can appear dry and powdery.
Sara, I’m not to far from Louisville. You’re correct, Outside of conventional medicine, there are not many options in KY. There is an environmental Dr. In Louisville, not sure exactly how he treats though. There is a Dr. In southern Indiana that could help you detox. There is another Dr. Southeast Ohio, that treats mold illness. If you want a Shoemaker certified Dr., you would have to go further, like Chicago. Some of them will do phone appointments after your first visit in their office. I have contact info if you need any of it.

I’ve been using stuff from the store to clean my molds. They are effective but very strong, sometimes I feel a weakness in my arms from their strength. For this reason, using something natural like those you’ve listed here is most helpful. Voted interesting and useful. Great hub!
Hi .. I am also suffering from toxic mold exposure.. Seek out an environmental specialist or facility. Unfortunately the main stream medical docs are ignorant to environmental exposures. I am also a nurse and let me say .. Thank god I know how to advocate for myself. I am still so so sick however just located an doc who specializes in This field. If this doesn’t detox, I’m off to Dallas or Fla for treatment, insurance does not recognize this illness. It is ridiculous .
If you believe you or someone you love is becoming ill from mold exposure, see a doctor. Remember that agencies like the CDC cannot treat health problems and only a local health care provider can provide the care you or your family needs. The CDC recommends that you first consult your family doctor or PCP and ask whether you need to see a specialist like an allergist, an infectious disease doctor, or a pulmonary physician. Remember, if your health problem is an emergency, get help immediately.
Often enough, many mold killing products will have ammonia already in them. Be extra cautious to follow the directions on the label to the letter and ensure that the cleanser is never mixed with bleach (in part or whole)!
All u need is bleach i prefer scented and a long cotton ball strip the kind u get from a salon store like sallys soak your cotton strip place all the way around tub grout or calking leave for half come back remove throw away no scrubbing involved u will be amazed white vinigar works great for ceiling and toilet mold. Happy cleaning.
Bluemoose, Wikimedia Commons

http://lakeland-multitrade.com/?_escaped_fragment_=home/c2df Your report of restoring books by storing them for several months in baking soda and/or activated charcoal is very interesting . I read elsewhere that charcoal filters in an air purifier can remove mold mycotoxins . If books can be restored in that way , then perhaps clothes and shoes with no visible mould could also be restored . Are you referring to stachy , black aspergillus mold mycotoxins , or less harmful ones ? Were your books exposed to stachy ? Where did you dreive your info from about this method ? I have a black mould problem in a 1 1/2 mete area of one wall , not in the bedroom , but as I am on a pension , with few assets , and neither my clothes nor my shoes smell of mold , and I realise I will need to ditch my mattress , bed , furnishings , cushions , washing machine , portable air conditioner , two air purifiers , and blender , juicer , stereo , computer , radio , etc., I am loathe to also ditch all my apparel and bags , bedding , blankets , etc . I am aware of the washing protocol of washing 3 times with borax, vinegar and epsom salts, each separately , and the storage solution would be an extra remedial measure . Any info would be appreciated , also any ways that the machines with motors could possibly be saved .
Unlike an air purifier which circulates a portion of a room’s indoor air and pushes it through a filter, Air Oasis’s Surface and Air Sanitizers produce safe catalytic molecules that are blown throughout the room to sanitize both the air and surfaces 24/7/365.
Toxic black mold also needs materials to be very wet for at least a week before it can begin to grow. So if you’ve had a flood or a large water leak that went unnoticed then there is an increased likelihood that toxic black mold could be in your home.
I don’t ask you to dramatically change what you’re doing, what you’re doing is great: and no, it’s not your fault that the “healthcare” system in this country is effed, or that access to healthy food, water, air, housing is heavily stratified among class and race lines…I merely ask that you lower your blinders just a little, to give a little nod to the masses that aren’t in your economic class, because some of us DO follow you. this could mean simply acknowledging the relatively inaccessibility of many of your suggestions, or even the occasional suggestion of lower-cost alternatives, or links to resources. Otherwise your efforts merely benefit the upper classes.
If you want to use vinegar to prevent mold growing on surfaces just spray vinegar on the surface and leave it. Repeat this every few days to ensure the surface will stay mold-free. You can even mop your tiled bathroom floor or other hard non-porous floors with vinegar if you are worried about mold growing on them.
The National Fire Protection Association reports that of the 2,565 civilian deaths from home fires in 2009, almost two-thirds (63 percent) involved homes with non-working or non-existent smoke alarms. New code requires smoke alarms in every room, bedrooms being of most importance.
One way to protect yourself is to replace standard circuit breakers in your electric service panel with arc-fault circuit interrupters, an upgrade that costs about $50. AFCIs provide enhanced protection against arc fault, a dangerous electrical problem caused by damaged, overheated or stressed electrical wiring or devices.
In practice, I think both of these tests can be used successfully as screening tools, but the OCST offered by VCSTest.com has the advantage of full display calibration, which allows for accurate results across any device (helpful in re-testing and tracking progress if the patient is re-taking the test on an iPad, for example, if the original test was done on a laptop computer).
Spray a small amount of the solution onto the mold. Do not drench the area, since additional moisture can actually increase the mold problem rather than getting rid of it. Spray to mold once or twice over, making sure that each area has been covered with the solution but without using so much solution that it begins dripping off.
If you already see or smell mold, however, spending money on testing and inspections is usually unnecessary since all mold in the home, regardless of the color or species type, should be remediated and removed. And all mold, regardless of the color or species, should be remediated and removed following the same accepted Mold Removal Guidelines.
Hydrogen Peroxide – Mix 1 part 20% hydrogen peroxide with 4 parts water to create a solution. This should only be used on organic fabrics (cotton, linen, etc.) that aren’t flame-resistant or don’t have easy-care finishes.
Consider replacing absorbent materials. Removing mold from absorbent materials can be extremely difficult. Instead, most professionals will recommend that you remove and replace such items, since it probably won’t be possible to remove the mold without damaging the material or causing further problems.

go @barleysinger. if you are going to talk about birth defects at least spiel it correctly. people afflicted by spina bifida don’t take too kindly to hocus pocus people saying unproven things of how one can have a baby born with it. It isn’t the water because less children now are born with it than before they added things to the water and most cases were in rural areas. It is one thing to try to help people and you know what you are talking about. It is another to hijack.someone else’s blog with your own inaccurate facts about a totally different subject.
Frankly, the mixture is cheep and pretty good on most situation but it takes PATIENCE and a lot of repeated work/treatments, *BUT* it is fairly useless on press board. My guess is that press board it just too porous, and after a month of spraying the area down every day with lots of scrubbing there has been about a 75%-80% improvement *EXCEPT FOR* the press board.
An IQAir HealthProPlus. IQAir makes HEPA filters that employ a four-stage filtration process (which includes activated carbon) to filter particles all the way down to 0.003 microns—the smallest particles that exist—with a guaranteed efficacy of more than 99.5 percent. We have one of these in the main living area of our home and one in the basement. Important note: Amazon.com is not an authorized reseller of IQAir, so if you purchase from there the warranty won’t be valid. I recommend purchasing directly from IQAir or from one of their authorized resellers.
Under his administration, the funding of science to better understand the health consequences of mold exposure stands to be slashed. Meanwhile, the significance of mold in human lives is expected to increase with rising sea levels and catastrophic weather events. The perennial intensification of severe weather patterns over the Gulf Coast has made flooding increasingly common, at least partly due to the warming of the ocean.
Clorox clean-up – is made up of mostly bleach. Bleach does not kill the mold. This is a myth. What bleach does is to literally bleach the color of the mold, making it hard to see after the mold has been sprayed and it dries. Unfortunately the mold is still there. That’s why you may notice the mold comes right back in most cases in the same exact place. Again, bleach is not effect on mold.
Either way, you don’t want to roll around in the stuff. Fiberglass is a man-made silicate fiber made from very fine strands of glass. According to the American Lung Association, inhaling these fibers can reduce lung function and cause inflammation in humans and animals as well as skin, eye and throat irritation.
“Toxic mold” is also unproven as a cause of the various symptoms associated with “sick building syndrome”.1,2)
Another disadvantage of bleach is that it can damage the materials it’s used on as it is a harsh, corrosive chemical. Chlorine bleach also gives off harsh fumes and it even produces toxic gas when mixed with ammonia. There are safer alternatives such as borax or vinegar which don’t produce dangerous fumes or leave behind toxic residue. For these reasons try to avoid using bleach and if you must use it, only use it on non-porous surfaces.
To minimize the amount of dust kicked up during cleaning — especially if you are concerned about lead dust — wipe down floors with a damp mop, dust with a damp cloth and clean surfaces with a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.
Made of tree pulp taken from strictly managed sustainable forests, paper-based countertops are a great alternative to stone and plastic surfaces. They come in a variety of colors and are mostly stain-, scratch- and heat-resistant.
I would have the landlord contact a professional company to conduct an air test to see what kind of mold spores are in the apartment. That would be the best way to prove it has Toxic Mold. I lived in an apartment with Toxic Mold and my health went downhill. If the test comes back positive, I would move right away.
Killing it is easy. Keeping it out is a huge job. This Old House devoted a program to it on about 1/17/17. Scrub the surface mold stains from walls and wood trim with a mixture of 1 qt. water and 1/2 cup bleach mold cleaner to kill the mold. Use a soft brush and work until signs of the mold disappear. After scrubbing the surfaces, simply allow the bleach solution to continue to penetrate the surfaces and dry.
You are not alone! This is a horrible illness world-wide for many people and is becoming more widespread as our buildings get older and more water damaged. The slowed economy isn’t helping matters much either as more building owners and home owners opt to cut costs in building maintenance.
People living in homes with toxic black mold are exposed mainly through breathing in toxic black mold spores and mycotoxins. Toxic black mold mycotoxins create irritation and a burning feeling in a person’s air passages such as the nasal cavity, mouth and throat.
If there is mold growth in your home, you must clean up the mold and fix the water problem. If you clean up the mold, but don’t fix the water problem, then, most likely, the mold problem will come back.
If someone in your home has recently experienced an unshakable increase in respiratory symptoms (sniffling, sneezing, forgetfulness, congestion, and so on) and you suspect a recent mold infestation, you may be facing a more serious mold strain. Under such conditions, hire a licensed mold inspector to examine your house and advise on the best way to mitigate it based on its pervasiveness. You should also hire a mold-removal specialist if the black mold has moved into your walls, in order to stop the problem before it spreads further. Otherwise, a mold problem confined to accessible, hard surfaces—such as bathroom walls, basement floors, or wood trim—can be tackled with the right gear and some persistence. Here’s how to remove black mold from your home.
Diagnosing and treating CIRS is not a “DIY proposition,” as it involves a lot of nuance and complexity that isn’t always apparent to clinicians and patients that are new to the condition. For example, C4a has to be run through Quest Diagnostics and then sent out to a specialized lab called National Jewish Laboratories in order to get an accurate result. I can’t tell you how many times patients have come to me with a C4a result run through Labcorp or another lab. It’s painful to have to tell them that we need to run these (sometimes expensive) labs again because they weren’t done properly in the first place.
Scrub the affected area with soapy water. Fill a bucket with warm water, and add 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of liquid dish soap. Swish the soap around in the water to make suds. Dip a stiff-bristled brush into the soapy water and scrub the moldy surface with the brush.[7] Re-dip the brush regularly and scrub until the area is saturated with suds. Rinse the area with water.
There are many advantages to using borax to kill mold. For starters, borax is a natural cleaning product and although it is toxic if you swallow it, borax does not emit chemicals or dangerous fumes like some other mold killers. Borax, a white mineral powder, has a pH level of about 9 (baking soda is pH 8.1 and pH 7 is neutral) and a low toxicity.
I live in a trailer and have discovered mold in a few places while spring cleaning. One place was under the trim at the bottom of the wall in my son’s room. I had researched how to kill mold and found the vinegar option. I sprayed the wall with vinegar (white distilled) and waited a couple of hours. Then I pulled the trim off that was damaged beyond repair and scrubbed the wall. There is still a yellowish color in some places. In the process I scrubbed the wallpaper and part of the wall off. I think it may be in the carpet as well. I am concerned about it being toxic mold too. I do not have the money for home improvements right now as I can barely pay my basic bills. I am concerned now that I may have disturbed the problem and was wondering what can I do to somewhat safely live with this problem until I can have carpets and possibly floors and walls redone. I have no insurance either. What should I do?
Whether the wood is finished or raw, if mold has penetrated, you are going to need a stronger solution, one that’s capable of killing spores beneath the surface of the material. To that end, mix 1 part detergent, 10 parts bleach, and 20 parts warm water. Apply your solution to the moldy area by means of a scrub sponge or a stiff-bristled brush, then allow the solution to air-dry on the wood.
Mix about 10 drops tea tree essential oil or a teaspoon with a cup of water. Put the mixture in a spray bottle (I use this cute glass one). Spray tea tree oil mixture on to mold or dampen mold with a cloth if no spray bottle is available. Leave on for a few hours or overnight to kill mold. Once this is done scrub area with solution to remove any mold and spray again. Leave on surface to prevent mold from coming back. Optional: Finish by wiping area with baking soda if you run out of tea tree oil.
Black mold -also- maims and sickens and kills people…and it thrives in press board, strand board, plywood (to a lesser extent) and carpets). If you ever have the chance to build – just avoid the stuff. the stuff.
The most infamous species, S. chartarum (previously known as S. atra) and S. chlorohalonata, are known as “black mold” or “toxic black mold” in the U.S., and are frequently associated with poor indoor air quality that arises after fungal growth on water-damaged building materials.[5] According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “The term ‘toxic mold’ is not accurate. While certain molds are toxigenic, meaning they can produce toxins (specifically mycotoxins), the molds themselves are not toxic, or poisonous. Hazards presented by molds that may produce mycotoxins should be considered the same as other common molds which can grow in your house.”[6]
To test this idea, Reid and his colleagues placed slime molds in a petri dish behind a U-shaped barrier that blocked a direct route to a piece of food. Because the barrier was made of dry acetate, the slime molds could not stick to it and climb over it; instead, they had to follow the contours of the U toward the food. Ultimately, 23 of 24 slime molds reached the goal. But when Reid coated the rest of the petri dish in extracellular slime before introducing the slime molds, only eight of 24 found the food. All that preexisting slime confused the slime molds, preventing them from marking different areas as explored or unexplored. Reid thinks that a polycephalum in a labyrinth is similarly dependent on its slime, using it to first map the entire maze and then to remember which corridors are dead-ends.
I dealt with an awful black mold experience in an old apartment. I had no clue what was making me so sick for so long. Doctors kept implying nothing was wrong with me. I even had a pulmonologist tell me what I really need was a psychiatrist.

what happens if you have black mold in your house | remove black mould washing machine door seal

click here Have you considered cutting out the contaminated drywall and carpet? As long as there is a food source and/or moisture present, the mold will continue to spread and flourish. Are there any leaks in pipes on a shared wall for example between a bathroom and your sons bedroom?
Let the stain dry in the sun, or pre-soak it – Again, this depends on the type of fabric. Sunlight is great at removing mould from fabric, but it can also fade colours and damage delicate fabrics. So a white cotton T-shirt can be dried in the sun, but not a colourful nylon shirt. Alternatively, you can pre-soak the stained garment for up to an hour in one of the solutions suggested below.
The first step in the protocol is removing the patient from exposure to the biotoxins. This involves testing all environments (home, workplace, recreational) that the patient spends significant amounts of time in throughout the course of his or her daily life. If mold or other biotoxins are identified, those environments must be successfully remediated (followed by taking adequate measures to prevent recurrence), or the patient must relocate to another home or workplace.
The Kōji (麹) molds are a group of Aspergillus species, notably Aspergillus oryzae, and secondarily A. sojae, that have been cultured in eastern Asia for many centuries. They are used to ferment a soybean and wheat mixture to make soybean paste and soy sauce. Koji molds break down the starch in rice, barley, sweet potatoes, etc., a process called saccharification, in the production of sake, shōchū and other distilled spirits. Koji molds are also used in the preparation of Katsuobushi.
If you suspect you have toxic black mold in your home, you should have an inspection performed. Some reasons to think that you might have toxic black mold include you are suffering toxic symptoms, you have had bad water damage or you have already found a toxic black mold colony and think there could be more. When having an inspection you should not only try to find the mold colony but also the water problem which caused it.
Can you be gluten intolerant without having celiac disease? Can gluten cause symptoms not related to digestion? A growing body of evidence proves that non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is not only real, but possibly a larger problem than celiac disease.
The perfect choice for this retro-style kitchen, natural linoleum has been popular for over 100 years. It is made from all raw materials, including linseed oil, resins and wood flour. Natural linoleum is often used in hospitals because its bactericidal properties stop microorganisms from multiplying and it is easy to clean.
To guard against the health risks associated with black mold, preventing and controlling mold growth in the home is the best defense. Treating areas of existing mold growth should always be done while wearing a respirator or mask rated for work with mold spores, and arms, legs and hands should be covered to prevent an allergic reaction.
Indoor mold may be unsightly and smelly, but the potential problems are more serious than that.
Toxic Black Mold can be deadly if it is allowed to grow unrestrained. And, as unappealing as this fowl smelling fungi is, its this distinctive odor that can lead you to its location and taking action to get it removed from your home as soon as possible.
Borax – This water-soluble mineral is also a natural mould-killer, which you can buy as a detergent or in powder form. If you get it as a powder, mix half a cup of borax thoroughly with hot water according to instructions. Then add the solution directly into the drum of your washing machine, and launder the clothes as normal.

SVOCs are hard to avoid, as they are ubiquitous in our homes. Phthalate esters are colorless, odorless and used to make plastics soft and flexible, such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been widely used as flame retardants in furniture cushions, textiles, plastics, paints and electronic appliances. Naphthalene is the key ingredient in mothballs. Other man-made chemicals such as the dry-cleaning solvent known as PERC (perchloroethylene) and the blue, sweet-smelling liquid called TCE (trichloroethylene) that is found in spot removers and carpet-cleaning fluids are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and they are likely carcinogens.

No one knows exactly how many homes have mold behind the walls, but the best current estimate is about 70 percent, according to Ronald E. Gots, M.D., Ph.D., of the International Center for Toxicology and Medicine. The EPA and World Health Organization state that some molds have the potential to cause health problems, particularly allergic reactions and asthma, in people who are susceptible.
History, signs, and symptoms consistent with biotoxin exposure. In cases of mold toxicity, history should include exposure to toxin-producing molds as documented by the EPA-approved ERMI test (more on this in point #4 below). In other cases (microcystin, ciguatera, etc.), history should include likely exposure or laboratory evidence of exposure.
Sometimes the signs are not as evident. It may grow in places where you can’t see it, like behind a wall or under a carpet. If you begin experiencing an allergic reaction or suddenly having respiratory problems, you should check for signs of black mold.
Activated charcoal can be taken as a supplement for mold cleansing. Most people don’t think about mold living in their bodies, but it can, and activated charcoal is a potent natural treatment. It traps toxins in the body, allowing them to be flushed out so the body doesn’t reabsorb them. Activated charcoal is made from a variety of sources, but when used for natural healing, it’s important to select activated charcoal made from coconut shells or other natural sources.
Reality: According to the EPA, “While air-cleaning devices may help to control the levels of airborne allergens, particles or, in some cases, gaseous pollutants in a home, they may not decrease adverse health effects from indoor air pollutants.”
Choose a cleaning agent. Cleaning agents range from mild to potent and include both natural and chemical alternatives. If you have small children or pets in your home, you may want to consider a milder, natural solution over a powerful chemical one. If you have a more advanced mold problem, a stronger chemical may be necessary.
Skin problems like acne, eczema, and rosacea are epidemic, yet conventional treatments rarely work. Find out what really causes skin problems, and how simple dietary changes can restore the clear, beautiful skin you desire.
Mix your cleaning solution. There are a number of cleaning solutions and products you can use to clean mold. The most effective will be a commercial biocide or antimicrobial cleaner, which is specifically designed to kill mold.[8] There are other cleaning solutions you can try that have proven effective, including:[9]
Avoidance of identified indoor allergens can be very effective in controlling allergy symptoms. If such avoidance is not possible or incomplete, antihistamines are a common treatment for reactions to indoor allergens. These are medications that fight the effects of the histamine released during an allergic reaction by blocking the action of the histamine on the tissue.
I saw some mold and tried to wipe it off. But when I pulled the lip back, WOW!! Gross! There was slimy mold that had to have been there for quite a while. Even if I wipe it off, the rubber is stained black. I can’t keep up with cleaning it. I leave the washer door open when not in use, hoping it would dry out. I have tried to clean with bleach, but cant get into the creases well. So there is always some mold. I asked my repair man if using bleach was ok. He said, “Yes,” so we put bleach in the washer.
1. Consider your level of sensitivity and illness. If you’re bedridden and the slightest pro-inflammatory trigger affects you, it’s a good idea, in an abundance of caution, to get rid of almost everything. I was not/am not that ill, so I am willing to accept a higher level of potential risk.
About thirty years ago, I was living in an apt on the top floor of a flat roofed building. The tar on the roof needed upgrading and it rained a lot one year and suddenly my bedroom ceiling was COVERED in black mold. The apt building was owned by an Insurance Company, and I called the manager to let them know that this problem had occurred. They didnt take my concerns seriously and I ended up moving, but not before I noticed that I didnt feel quite right, started going to doctors to get answers without success, and took days off work due to fatigue. I recovered, but a few years later, I had a BLACK fungal infection in one of my ears. Gross, I know, but Im sure that it was related to my exposure.
Spending time in damp and moldy buildings seems to increase the risk of bronchitis and respiratory infections, but is not proven to do so. If it is a cause of these infections, bacteria or chemical emissions are likely to be responsible.10
Abnormalities documented by visual contrast sensitivity (VCS) testing. VCS testing measures your ability to see details at low contrast levels. Dr. Shoemaker and Dr. Ken Hudnell—a principal investigator for the U.S. EPA’s National Health and Environmental Effects Research Lab and an expert on how neurotoxins affect the physiology of vision—discovered that the biotoxins affect the optical nerve and decrease the ability to detect visual contrast.
This panel contains the following tests: Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9) Transforming Growth Factor beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) Melanocyte-Stimulating Hormone (MSH) Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) OsmolalityBiotoxin illness refers to the cause of a persons illness. All biotoxin illnesses have one common
The blood testing that Dr Shoemaker recommends is perfectly legit and can get done through Labcorp. Insurance will cover in many cases. The most important ones are HLA-DR, MSH, C4a and TGF-b1. The complete list can be found here: http://www.survivingmold.com/diagnosis/lab-orders
Submerging a city means introducing a new ecosystem of fungal growth that will change the health of the population in ways we are only beginning to understand. The same infrastructure and geography that have kept this water from dissipating created a uniquely prolonged period for fungal overgrowth to take hold, which can mean health effects that will bear out over years and lifetimes.
More Information A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture, and Your Home This Guide provides information and guidance for homeowners and renters on how to clean up residential mold problems and how to prevent mold growth.
NOTE- 27% hydrogen peroxide is a very strong chemical, which can burn skin instantly! Wear sturdy neoprene gloves for this whole process. If any peroxide gets on your hands, wash it off immediately with lots of water.
So, if the above is not true, and one is in a minority of having mold susceptible genes, that is something that one really needs to be careful of and treat. If it turns out that nearly 90% of the folks in this country have the same genes, then you really have the same issues to treat, but that having unfortunate genetics isn’t one of them.

Whether or not your home insurance will cover mold-related damages or mold eradication procedures depends on your policy and the factors contributing to the mold’s growth. Most mold growth is caused by water leakage or poor ventilation and unfortunately, many homeowners policies do not cover all kinds of water damage.
Something scientists have come to understand is that slime molds are much smarter than they look. One species in particular, the SpongeBob SquarePants–yellow Physarum polycephalum, can solve mazes, mimic the layout of man-made transportation networks and choose the healthiest food from a diverse menu—and all this without a brain or nervous system. “Slime molds are redefining what you need to have to qualify as intelligent,” Reid says.
Instead of calling in the experts and paying a hefty amount to have the mold removed, there are ways you can handle the problem yourself. Before you begin, here are some ideas for how to do it and what you’ll need.
I am a family practice physician and I have been in practice for over 15  years. In 2006 I was sick with many terrible symptoms for 11 months. I did not know why I was sick until I discovered I was being exposed to very high levels of stachybotrys, the more common toxic black mold and chaetomium, a less common toxic white mold. This was what caused all my symptoms over the span of a nine month exposure.
To cut down on household dust, declutter, reduce paper, eliminate smoking and regularly change or clean the furnace and air conditioner filters. Also, park your shoes at the door — two-thirds of all dust contaminants are tracked into the home from the outside.
CIRS was originally defined by Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker, a former family physician in Maryland. (Dr. Shoemaker is now retired, but he is still actively involved in raising awareness and advancing the understanding of CIRS.
So can you comment on what we should be looking for in terms of engaging a mold inspector? I have been told by my functional med doctor that chronic inflammation is contributing to my symptoms (elevated C4, MMP-9 and TGF Beta) and the tests showed that I have HLA Mold and multi-susceptibility type BUT so far I have not been able to find any significant areas of mold my home other than the usual – little bit on the bath grout, bit of black slime around the kitchen sink. Plus, my symptoms have been ongoing for four or five years now and we have only been in this house for three. Today I spoke to an independent mold inspector that said he would visually inspect our home (for several hundred dollars) and if there was mold or had been mold he would find it because it usually leaves some kind of indication. His website mentions the use of infrared thermography if necessary. Any advice on what else to ask/look for with mold inspections? Thanks
Toxic black mold can cause permanent damage to your health. In extreme cases toxic black mold has even lead to death. Because of the serious health effects toxic black mold can cause, if you find it in your home you need to take steps to get it removed immediately. The longer you are around toxic black mold, the more it will damage your health.

What We Do

Most of the mold came off the window with the tea tree oil, but for a few stubborn spots I used the vinegar right after the tea tree oil mixture and then lastly used the baking soda to scrub it. So, I do use them all on the same spots but, for the most part, the tea tree oil mixture removes almost all of the mold. 🙂
Be sure to avoid any foods which you notice have caused you allergies in the past and before eating check food for signs of mold, especially foods such as cheese, bread and fruit which mold can readily grow on if past the use by date.
I was reading this article and intrigued by the air filter mentions: you said they were pricey, and pricey indeed: I looked up the items and from what you said it appears you have invested at least $4000 in air filtration/sanitizers in your own home, which is, as you say, worth it. I believe it is for you and your family.
Steve, you are not crazy..its all real what’s happening to all of you. I had a minor area of damage July 25, 2012 and became sick with asthma in 2days then within 2 wks it was crushing, burning pressure in my bladder with frequent urination and extreme thirst. Then anxiety and then 8mths later in March i overnight became severely depressed out of the blue. Then mood swings and rage issues and all the other problems continued. Then anorexia which i still have every so often where i cant eat for a wk at a time bc i feel so bloated and full…it passes and comes back again. Then blurry vision and the eye dr said i should be seeing ok but i couldnt and still cant. My cats started losing their hair a bit and 2 of them became asthmatic and they all (11) started throwing up thier food at every meal all around the house and still do. I had surgeries on my bladder that I didn’t need bc it has turned out to be IC which is interstitial cystitis which is what was and does if i eat the wrong thing what causes my bladder pain WHICH I HEALED MY SELF bc the drs are uninformed and were urging me crazy with over active bladder meds which did not work at all…none of them. Then they all were saying i needed anti depressants bc if they cant find the cause then of course it must be in your head…right? No! Thats not it at all. I was finally diagnosed this past Feb when i ended up in a recently rained dr in the Shoemaker protocol as in Dr Shoemaker and his website is called “surviving mold.com” and it has a lot of info which is very helpful. Many Drs and others do not believe that we are sick with this life changing illness but we all are and you need to know its a up hill battle you and all of us have to fight to get well and to be believed. There ar some very good books that i found very helpful to explain all of this. I was told in Feb by my dr to move out ASAP and to leave everything behind. If i take anything ill just contaminate the new place so ive been trying to get the money together to do that….but its very hard while you’re suffering and fighting the none believers and have no energy to do it..or anything some days. I had i one of my cats urine tested for the mycotoxins and it came back for gliotoxins which are shed by yeast. I lost 3 cats to cancer since the pipe burst and the company sent out allowed the mold to grow trying to cut corners and now im losing everything and no one will take responsibility for it which is maddening and completely wrong but its the way it is. I hope you get some answers but please do not give up..there is hope and there are people to help guide and give advice but it takes time. YOU ARE NOT IMAGINING IT, IT IS REAL!
We recently redid our bathroom in our house to move back in. A couple months later we now have black mold on the ceiling of the bathroom where there was a leak and in the next room where my step sons room is.
It has mild acidic properties and is safe to use for everyday mold remediation tasks. As an anti-bacterial agent, it will serve you well when removing black mold from bathrooms and kitchen sinks alike.
Toxic black mold mycotoxins that are in the air can enter a person’s eyes. The mycotoxins are cytotoxic (toxic to cells) and when they come into contact with eye cells they cause inflamed and injured eyes and create vision problems.
Because black mold can form in the walls before spreading to drywall or other surfaces, chances are that homeowners may smell its musty, mildew odor before seeing it. When you do start your inspection, look for its characteristic slimy texture, dark green-black (sometimes gray) color, and spotty appearance.
higher concentrations may be hazardous and will corrode many materials, including human skin; in a lower concentration it is safe to use, doesn’t damage the environment, leave a toxic residue, or produce a toxic fume; it is a bleaching agent which may cause material to fade
Luckily, I’ve been able to pinpoint the sources! I wasn’t able to purchase new furniture due to the expense of a major move. I have a faux or leather recliner, micro- fiber couch, solid wood dresser and bookshelf, that are painted(all from the previous dwelling. At this time I don’t have a choice but to keep them. Though I cleaned clothing in hot water and got rid of household items that were effected, I was hoping you would give your thoughts/ recommendations..? Can I use any of the natural remedies on the upholstery? Wondering if I put one or a combo of the essential oils you speak of, in my hand held steamer or steam cleaner, that I can save our health (including our sm dog, who now has respiratory and rash issues) and my furnishings? Thank you for taking the time to read my fears. Desperately and Sincerely…
Consider switching to liquid or powder detergent if you are using pacs. Especially in HE washers, the pac wrapper may not dissolve completely and a gooey residue can be deposited onto and around the seals, which can allow mold to grow.
The toxins that adversely affect our health include chemicals (e.g., BPA, phthalates, pesticides), heavy metals (e.g., mercury, arsenic, lead, cadmium), and biotoxins (toxins produced by living organisms like mold, bacteria, dinoflagellates, and blue-green algae).
We replaced the GE with a Samsung and despite all the same precautions, same detergent, etc., now have thick, foul black mold on the rubber seal. I’ll try this, but I doubt I’ll ever buy a Samsung washer again.
The EPA considers bacteria, molds, mildew, viruses, animal dander, cat saliva, house dust, mites, cockroaches and pollen all biological contaminants. Excessive moisture creates breeding grounds for these contaminants, so ventilate adequately and keep relative humidity between 30 percent and 50 percent to prevent condensation on building materials.
Toxic black mold can be expensive to remove and even cause a range of health problems — so testing for black mold is an important first step if you think your home might have a black mold infestation.

To minimize the amount of dust kicked up during cleaning — especially if you are concerned about lead dust — wipe down floors with a damp mop, dust with a damp cloth and clean surfaces with a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.
Hi Chris. Thanks so much for shining a light on the subject of mold. I’m just checking in to see if you have any further information from Dr. Ghosh about the safety of using the air oasis units while in the room or are you still just using them when not in the room? If so, I’m considering some programmable wifi outlets where I could set up a schedule for them to run when I’m not home. Thanks.
100-150). Is suing the company for all I’ve lost and the cost of the move feasible? I’ve been here in this place for 19yrs and now have to start with a new mortgage and the cost of moving is crippling to me!!! Any advice or comments would be appreciated.
Mold absolutely thrives in an environment that offers warmth, low nitrogen, high cellulose content in which to feed and finally moisture to keep it going. A bathroom wall void and the paper on drywall is such a place.
Step 6: Switch to the full strength 27% solution after the first couple of hours. Spray this strong cleaner as before, just be extra careful not to get any on your skin. It will burn like crazy! Don’t let the 27% peroxide run down your gloves onto your skin. For any skin contact, immediately flush with lots of clean water. Use the 27% peroxide spray for a full day. I allowed 48 hours for the full treatment of bad black stains.
Dry your shower after bathing. Showers and tubs are common places for mold to grow because they stay wet all the time. To prevent this, keep a squeegee in the bathroom and ask that all family members and guests wipe down the walls after bathing.
For instance, a combination of baking soda and vinegar may be just the ticket for getting rid of mold in damp clothing. If the clothing is sitting in a dark and poorly ventilated laundry room, then the conditions could be ripe for mold and mildew to develop.
A few types of mold are highly toxic. If you have an allergic reaction to mold or a heavy infestation inside your home, call in a pro to analyze the types. Or call your local public heath department and ask for mold-testing advice.
In the ongoing battle against this fungi, consider your next attack on the mold with green cleaning alternatives. Here are seven ways of killing mold without creating havoc on the environment or your family.
Someone please shed sum advice..
My wife and I are extremely pleased with services provided by Moldman. We had a few small spots of mold growing in our baby’s room… We contacted Moldman for an inspection… And they were able to recommend us a remedy that we could do by ourselves, without charging a dime! Other companies we contacted wanted to charge hundreds of dollars just to come out and check if it was indeed mold: of course it is mold! It’s nice to see there are still honest people out there and Moldman is one of them.
Bosch is terrible for mold on the seal. I have had seal replaced and it is impossible to keep mould free! Never ever again will I buy a Bosch. The company ignores to problem, but it is clearly a design fault.
How do we find a certified specialist to come inspect for mold once we have done the HERMI test? I’ve spend hundreds of dollars on inspectors, but they don’t understand CIRS patients. I live in a small county in Missouri so I don’t have allot of options locally. Kansas City is the nearest big city to me. I hope you can help! Thanks
Publications in 2007, 2010, and 2011 did not substantially change those findings.8,9,10,11 They reiterate that there is evidence to support an association between damp spaces, indoor mold, and respiratory illnesses. Therefore, whether the precise cause is mold or an accompanying indoor contaminant, spending time in places damp enough to support the growth of mold is a potential cause of ill health. Whether or not mold is actually seen, finding and fixing the sources of excess moisture are important for health and to keep the structure from being further damaged. Researchers note that, if dampness and mold could be confirmed as a cause of ill health, controlling these conditions would make a substantial contribution to public health.
Navigating a maze is a pretty impressive feat for a slime mold, but the protist is in fact capable of solving more complex spatial problems: Inside laboratories slime molds have effectively re-created Tokyo’s railway network in miniature as well as the highways of Canada, the U.K. and Spain. When researchers placed oat flakes or other bits of food in the same positions as big cities and urban areas, slime molds first engulfed the entirety of the edible maps. Within a matter of days, however, the protists thinned themselves away, leaving behind interconnected branches of slime that linked the pieces of food in almost exactly the same way that man-made roads and rail lines connect major hubs in Tokyo, Europe and Canada.
After years of these symptoms, I ended up in the hospital for five days due to a bad lung infection where my throat closed. I couldn’t breathe due to the extreme swelling of the glands in my throat. Lymph glands. I was put on three different antibiotics and steroids, plus breathing treatments. I was released after five days with no know cause.
This sounds a lot like what’s happening in Washington, but it’s also what’s happening in Jefferson City, as the crisis facing Missouri Governor Eric Greitens deepens. The state’s attorney general and the majority leader in the state Senate have both called for Greitens to resign after the release of a damning report this week by the state House Special Investigative Committee on Oversight, a bipartisan team.
I have a tingling sensation sometimes feels like prick or bite all over body. No rash or sores though. Its particularly bothersome at night. Muscle and joint pain too. 47 years old.

Twelve years ago in New Orleans, Katrina similarly rendered most homes unlivable, and it created a breeding ground for mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, and caused a shortage of potable water and food. But long after these threats to human health were addressed, the mold exposure, in low-income neighborhoods in particular, continued.
To tell if black mold may be growing in your home, just follow your nose. A musty, earthy smell, like dirt and rotting leaves, is a telltale sign of mold’s presence. Stachybotrys smells especially strong. All molds need food, water and a dark, stagnant environment with temperatures that neither freeze nor boil to grow. Stachybotrys likes it a little wetter than some, feeding on water-saturated cellulose-based material such as cotton, wicker, drywall, lumber, cardboard and even dust or lint. If your home has flooded or you notice excessive moisture on or around building materials, possibly even dark rings on drywall indicating moisture damage, the conditions are ripe for black mold. The smell almost guarantees mold. But even if you see mold, that’s no guarantee that it’s black mold.
Sorry to butt in here. . But does testing animal urine really work? If so who tests it? I rented a house in 2010 and my grandmother lived with me as I took care of her and worked everyday. She was 71 when we got here. . First it was vertigo. . Then vision problems. . . Memory loss . . Respitory arrest. . . And finally long term permenant care at a facility. I associated it to old age. . Meanwhile my dog loses all of the back half of his hair on his butt yearly to regrow it and lose it again. . .moving on to me. . . I started having sever problems with respitory issues in2012 which lead to a heart attack in 2014. When I was at the hospital I felt 25 again but I got home and kept getting sick. . I began to develops all of the same symptoms as my granny did prior. . . I’ve had pneumonia 4 times since 2014 . . Frequent urination constant thirst blurry vision mood swings light sensitivity vertigo and so on. 6 1/2 yrs ago when I moved in here I was 33 and in prime physical condition. . . Now some days I can’t get out of bed. . 5 days ago I moved a shelf in my bedroom corner and the baseboard split open where they meet at the wall and there is a spidering rash of mold running in both directions on the baseboards and creeping up the wall. . Since my grandmother’s departure to the facility her health has improved. My now fiance moved in 2 yrs ago and is 9 months pregnant. . Her 3 small kids all under age 10 live here and they are always sick too. . . The dog has been here all along but the vet said we can’t test his blood for mold. . . My doctor says I’m crazy. . . But it all makes sense. . I need to find a way to prove I’m right. .
Yes, people are indeed sickened and stay sickened by exposure to Water Damaged Buildings (WDB). There have been lots of names for the illness over the years, including “Mold illness.” The best discussion of the academic basis for this illness is found in the Expert Treating Physicians Consensus report published 7/2010 (available on this site). Let start with some basic ideas: this illness is not an allergy. It is an inflammation within the body which is caused by an immune system that has gone haywire. The term “mold illness” is a subcategory of biotoxin illness called Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS). The proper definition of CIRS is:
You have really shared an informative post of 5 Things we must know about toxic mold illness. Water damage is the main problem which grows mold if we didnt care and resolve the leakage as soon as possible it will grows mold. Mold creates a bad impact on daily life.
I am not an expert but my understanding is that once MSH becomes low you are susceptible to everything (mold, lyme etc) regardless of HLA genetics. So in other words exposure to one type of biotoxin can lower MSH such that you become susceptible to other types. You should definitely consult a doc that specializes in biotoxin illness to get a definite answer.
If you have had a flooding problem or a water leak, the water needs to be pumped out immediately and the area should dry completely. Check for roof leaks that may have seeped through into your attic. Remove any items from the floors or walls that are wet and then use fans and a dehumidifier to dry the area. Mold can germinate and grow in as little as 24 hours so be quick and thorough about cleanup.
You can also use lemon juice and baking soda made into a paste then brush onto clothes . It works great on towels that have molded, rub it on then wash in warm to hot water. Hang out in direct sunlight!! It helps to kill the mold.
[1] Of note, the development of asthma did not correlate with the amount of visible mold, but did correlate with the more sophisticated measurement techniques described in the article. This lends support to calls for standardized methods of evaluating homes and other environments for molds and other substances which can affect indoor air quality and human health.
These devices are not cheap, but given what I’ve come to understand about the importance of indoor air quality to health, and given that my wife, my daughter, and I are all genetically susceptible to CIRS, I think they’re worth the expense. As an added benefit, the air in your home will smell like it does outside! It’s an incredible difference.
Experts suspect that toxic black mold can cause cancer, although there still needs to be more research. Some other toxic molds, like Aspergillus for example, definitely cause cancer though. The aflatoxin mycotoxins which Aspergillus produce are among the most powerful carcinogens.
Mold is everywhere. It’s a type of fungus that grows from tiny spores that float in the air. It can grow almost anywhere that spores land and find moisture and a comfortable temperature, between 40 and 100 degrees F. Typically that includes about every damp place in your home.
Hydrogen peroxide is another odorless option that can be used to kill black mold. Pour a 3 percent concentration hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle and spray the moldy areas until they are saturated. Let the hydrogen peroxide sit for at least 10 minutes before scrubbing the area well. Wipe the area with hydrogen peroxide when you’re done scrubbing.

What We Do

Researchers from the Natural Resources Defense Council held a press conference after Katrina about dangerously high levels of mold spores in the air. The group accused the Environmental Protection Agency of focusing only on exposures like arsenic, lead, asbestos, and pollutants such as those found in gasoline, while ignoring mold exposure.
However, a minority of people have HLA (human leukocyte antigen) genes that prevent their bodies from being able to recognize and thus eliminate biotoxins. The biotoxins will remain in the body and trigger a chronic, systemic inflammatory response. These are the people that develop CIRS.
Health problems from mold exposure are on the increase. One problem with being exposed to mold is that many people suffer with symptoms and they never find out that it’s due to the mold. Even doctors are often unaware of the health implications surrounding mold exposure. Symptoms can range from runny nose, headaches, rashes, fatigue, depression and memory problems to more serious health problems such as respiratory or neurological conditions. Mold exposure has also been found to be associated with cancers. This why it is important to remove mold in your home as soon as possible with any of these suggestions on how to get rid of mold naturally.
Apply cleaner and let it soak. For liquid solutions, spray generous amounts of cleaner on the moldy surface that you pre-scrubbed. For pastes, apply the paste to the affected area with a knife, brush, or old tooth brush.

Many MD’s r not even aware of what the tests are….I have had two neurologist who thought heavy metal poisoning was a scam.. don’t trust your doctors lack of knowledge ..insist on testing …they will not suffer years of pain….you will !!
The National Fire Protection Association reports that of the 2,565 civilian deaths from home fires in 2009, almost two-thirds (63 percent) involved homes with non-working or non-existent smoke alarms. New code requires smoke alarms in every room, bedrooms being of most importance.
