Moldman was the best mold company I talked to. They explained everything, and were very honest and informative. I would use them again if I ever had another mold issue. I have also already recommended this company to friends. Everyone I spoke to was very nice.
Abnormalities documented by visual contrast sensitivity (VCS) testing. VCS testing measures your ability to see details at low contrast levels. Dr. Shoemaker and Dr. Ken Hudnell—a principal investigator for the U.S. EPA’s National Health and Environmental Effects Research Lab and an expert on how neurotoxins affect the physiology of vision—discovered that the biotoxins affect the optical nerve and decrease the ability to detect visual contrast.
1) Are you seeing a connection of the CIRS lab values and HLA mutations to other issues such as heavy metal toxicity? 2) If CIRS labs are out of range with HLA gene mutation and had a long-term past WDB exposure, can you recover without protocol over time? Will the labs remain out of range without treatment?
Unlike an air purifier which circulates a portion of a room’s indoor air and pushes it through a filter, Air Oasis’s Surface and Air Sanitizers produce safe catalytic molecules that are blown throughout the room to sanitize both the air and surfaces 24/7/365.
Of note, the development of asthma did not correlate with the amount of visible mold, but did correlate with the more sophisticated measurement techniques described in the article. This lends support to calls for standardized methods of evaluating homes and other environments for molds and other substances which can affect indoor air quality and human health.
An estimated 20 million Americans have thyroid disorders, but more than half don’t know it. Find out why thyroid problems are so often mis-diagnosed, what really causes them, and how to heal them naturally.
Toxic black mold produces trichothecene mycotoxins. These are some of the most toxic and stable mycotoxins. Trichothecene mycotoxins can take several years to break down and can be nearly impossible to remove from homes.
When airborne mold spores are present in large numbers, they can cause allergic reactions, asthma episodes, infections, and other respiratory problems for people. Exposure to high spore levels can cause the development of an allergy to the mold. Similarly, when wood goes through a period of wetting, then drying, it can eventually warp and cause walls to crack or become structurally weak.
You can help your body recover if you’ve been exposed to black mold. You can also naturally rid your home of black mold and prevent it in the first place! Black mold symptoms are highly unpleasant so you really don’t want to deal with them if you don’t have to.
If you are at all concerned about airborne particles contaminating your face, there are N95 rated masks that you can purchase at your local home improvement stores that can offer a bit more protection.
Outdoors, molds play a role in the decomposition of organic material such as dead trees, compost, and leaves. They are most common in damp, dark areas or areas of decomposing plant life. Indoors, mold is often found in basements or shower stalls. Indoor mold in residential areas has the potential to cause health problems and can destroy surfaces and objects where it grows.
If you suspect a problem (or better yet, as preventive maintenance), hire professionals to inspect for damaged shingles and siding, poorly connected plumbing and leaky pipes, and other moisture problems, such as inadequate vapor barriers. Mitigate the issues as soon as possible.
Biotoxic illness refers to the cause of a person’s illness. All biotoxic illnesses have one common denominator…toxins produced by living things. The tests contained in this panel look at the complex cascade of events throughout multiple inflammatory pathways produced by biotoxic mold exposure
When a person is around toxic black mold the immune system may release a sedative called Chloral Hydrate. This is used as a defense to try to slow down the effects of toxic black mold. But this also makes a person tired and causes fatigue. Toxic black mold can also cause soreness of the muscles and joints.
South of Fallujah’s Route Fran were hundreds of insurgents who’d spent months digging trench lines, emplacing roadside bombs, barricading streets, training with their weapons, reading the Koran, and watching videos of suicide bombers to inspire them for the fight to come. North of Route Fran were the roughly 1,000 men of 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, preparing themselves for the assault. Route Fran itself was a wide, four-lane highway. On November 9, 2004, the highway was wet—it’d rained the previous day—and the sky was gray and foreboding.
4. IMO, books, magazines, and newspapers are very susceptible to mold and decay even w/o a house having a mold problem. A sensitive person prob shouldn’t keep mags & newspapers around their house in any event. I love by books; I keep them in enclosed bookcases with glass doors.
Molds reproduce by forming tiny spores that are not visible to the naked eye. Mold spores are very hardy and can survive under conditions in which mold cannot grow, such as in dry and harsh environments. These spores travel through outdoor and indoor air. When the mold spores in the air land on a surface where moisture is present, mold can then start to grow.
My home has been damaged by the May 20th and May 31st tornados in Moore, OK. I did not want to use Clorox due to fumes and water supply. Some of your alternative solutions were new to me such as the Tea Tree Oil and Grapefruit extract. Being specific about mixing amounts helps me use my first thoughts of Vinegar or Hydrogen Pyroxide which I have on hand. I have a horrible area in one of my sheds and really appreciate the advise. Thank You. 🙂
If the area to be cleaned is more than 10 square feet, consult the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guide titled Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings. Although focused on schools and commercial buildings, this document also applies to other building types. You can get it by going to the EPA web site at https://www.epa.gov/mold/mold-remediation-schools-and-commercial-buildings-guide.
One of the best clues you could have toxic black mold is if you are suffering toxic symptoms. The symptoms from toxic black mold are much more severe than the allergic reactions caused by common non-toxic mold. You can see a list of toxic symptoms at the Toxic Black Mold Symptoms page.
Very useful! I tend to have bad reactions from toxic chemical cleaners. A lot of times the smell sets off a migraine. When I had black mold in my bathroom I was desperate for an alternative and found out about vinegar – and later tea tree oil. Oh, I wish I had found your hub sooner, but I swear by these products and my house is never without them. Thank you for sharing. 🙂
It’s going to cost a bit more than ammonia or bleach. However, it stores quite well and has a really good shelf-life (keep lid containers air-tight). When finished with small mold cleaning or prevention projects, simply put your spray bottle (properly labeled) away to use at future date.
Reality: There is no federal law requiring radon testing or radon-resistant construction features, even though the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) reports that about one in 15 homes has a radon problem and attributes 21,000 deaths a year to the naturally occurring radioactive gas. Exposure to radon, which can seep into a home and build up over time, is generally symptomless; you can’t smell or see radon gas and it can take up to 20 years of exposure before you develop lung cancer.
This is great information. I prefer using household pantry items for cleaning. I have a problem with mold and mildew building up in the shower. I leave my shower curtain open after showering so the moisture can dissipate, but mildew still creeps into the caulking.
Researchers from the Natural Resources Defense Council held a press conference after Katrina about dangerously high levels of mold spores in the air. The group accused the Environmental Protection Agency of focusing only on exposures like arsenic, lead, asbestos, and pollutants such as those found in gasoline, while ignoring mold exposure.
Allergies are an overreaction of the immune system where the body’s defenses react to substances such as pollen, food and more. Learn about common allergy triggers and how you can avoid an allergy attack.
I stay on the 3rd floor of these apts my girlfriend and I jus moved to and notice black mold in the ceiling wash room near the back side of the shower wall. It’s a nice size and Ive been really going thru all the symptoms. We have told maintenance on 3 different occasions but still they haven’t fixed it and we been here goin on 3 months. Someone please shed sum advice..
It is possible to reduce your sensitivity with treatment, yes. I suggest you read up on Shoemaker’s work. The VIP spray can help with this. Also mold avoidance is important, eventually you will probably be able to recognize bad environments. It’s hard to raise MSH though.
While any of these symptoms in itself may be indicative of many other diseases, experiencing many different symptoms from a number of the categories listed below suggests more strongly the possibility that toxic mold may be involved.
Try taking 10 capsules of a good activated charcoal. It worked for me within hours my ice pick like leg pain was gone. And it does not constipate me. I also use a good bentonite clay but I take that with the charcoal I do get constipated but it too is worth you trying it as it too should help you.
Reality: “Grab bars in bathrooms and showers are for everybody,” says Meri-K Appy, president of Safe Kids USA. “Thousands of kids wind up in hospital emergency rooms every year because of falls in the tub or shower.” She recommends installing a sturdy and well-positioned grab bar in an area where a wet, slippery surface may spell danger.
Apply cleaner and let it soak. For liquid solutions, spray generous amounts of cleaner on the moldy surface that you pre-scrubbed. For pastes, apply the paste to the affected area with a knife, brush, or old tooth brush.
The original publication about pulmonary hemorrhage fueled concerns and speculation about the health effects of Stachybotrys chartarum, or “black mold”. “Black mold” is indeed unsightly, but has not been identified as a cause of human illness.
FAST FOLDING: If you stroke the sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica), also known as touch-me-not, its fern-like row of leaves reflexively folds in half. Same thing if you blow on the plant or shake it. Whereas the Venus flytrap evolved rapid movement to catch insect prey, the sensitive plant probably shrinks from touch to discourage any insects or herbivores looking for a leafy snack. H. Some common health concerns associated with black mold could include hay fever-like symptoms for some. Others could experience more advanced upper respiratory challenges (asthma, ear infections, chronic fatigue and even kidney failure in extreme mold exposure cases). The very young and the elderly with weakened or undeveloped immune systems could also be at risk when exposed to higher levels of mold spores.
In most cases mold can be removed from hard surfaces by a thorough cleaning with commercial products, soap and water, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water. Absorbent or porous materials like ceiling tiles, drywall, and carpet may have to be thrown away if they become moldy. If you have an extensive amount of mold and you do not think you can manage the cleanup on your own, you may want to contact a professional who has experience in cleaning mold in buildings and homes. It is important to properly clean and dry the area as you can still have an allergic reaction to parts of the dead mold and mold contamination may recur if there is still a source of moisture.
There are many practitioners who advertise themselves on web sites as experts in “treating” victims of “toxic mold disease”, an entity which does not exist. For large sums of money, they will advise on numerous supplements and restrictive diets to “extract” mold from people. Since mold is not retained within human organs, it is pointless to spend money on such processes.
Open windows. Mold itself and the cleaning products you use to kill it can irritate eyes, skin, and lungs, so you must provide yourself with as much fresh air as possible. In the area where you’re going to be attacking the mold, open as many windows as possible.
It is a vicious cycle – the foreign antigens (substances) stay in the body, causing the immune system to constantly fight back. This causes so much inflammation in the body that it leads to chronic illness, and the occurrence of many symptoms. Our entire being suffers from friendly fire from our own innate immune system.
Mold growth in homes, schools, and businesses should be eliminated for the sake of human health, structural integrity, and quality of life. Cleaning up small amounts of mold can be done by homeowners. Eliminating mold from large areas requires expertise and protection both for the removal specialists and occupants of the affected space.
A list of the biomarkers that constitute a CIRS diagnosis can be found on Dr. Shoemaker’s site. However, if you fail the VCS test, and/or suspect you may have CIRS, I strongly recommend finding a CIRS-aware clinician in your area. You can start with the list of clinicians that have been certified by Dr. Shoemaker on his website. There are other clinicians, like those of us at California Center for Functional Medicine, that are familiar with CIRS and are actively diagnosing and treating patients for it, but are not yet certified.
I intend to store a counter-top humidifier for the off-season and have never reopened the unit for use and found mold, despite wrapping it in plastic in its original packing over the off-season. I clean it with Clorox clean-up spray and rinse it well during use, and often (weekly to every other week!), and cleaned it the same way before I intend to re-pack/store it, and I let it dry out completely. Is there ANY safe, proper, natural mold-preventative method to put in the box/unit whilst storing it, please? Thanks. JJ
When mold spores drop on places where there is excessive moisture, such as where leakage may have occurred in roofs, pipes, walls, plant pots, or where there has been flooding, they will grow. Many building materials provide suitable nutrients that encourage mold to grow. Wet cellulose materials, including paper and paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, wood, and wood products, are particularly conducive for the growth of some molds. Other materials such as dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation materials, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery, commonly support mold growth.
Identify and remove the source of the moisture problem. Mold can occur in obvious situations such as flooding or a water leak, but it can also grow in areas with high levels of humidity. Slow leaks, leaks behind walls and humidity build-up can all contribute to black mold. Mold only needs 24 hours to germinate and grow.
