My home has been damaged by the May 20th and May 31st tornados in Moore, OK. I did not want to use Clorox due to fumes and water supply. Some of your alternative solutions were new to me such as the Tea Tree Oil and Grapefruit extract. Being specific about mixing amounts helps me use my first thoughts of Vinegar or Hydrogen Pyroxide which I have on hand. I have a horrible area in one of my sheds and really appreciate the advise. Thank You. 🙂
Molds also emit volatile chemicals that some experts believe could affect the human nervous system. Among them is Joan Bennett, a distinguished professor of plant biology and pathology at Rutgers University, who has devoted her career to the study of fungal toxins. She was living in New Orleans during the storm, and she recalls that while some health experts were worried about heavy-metal poisoning or cholera, she was worried about fungus.
Mold growth in buildings can lead to a variety of health problems as microscopic airborne reproductive spores, analogous to tree pollen, are inhaled by building occupants. High quantities of indoor airborne spores as compared to exterior conditions are strongly suggestive of indoor mold growth. Determination of airborne spore counts is accomplished by way of an air sample, in which a specialized pump with a know flow rate is operated for a known period of time. Conducive to scientific methodology air samples should be drawn from the affected area, a control area, and the exterior.
Hi .. I am also suffering from toxic mold exposure.. Seek out an environmental specialist or facility. Unfortunately the main stream medical docs are ignorant to environmental exposures. I am also a nurse and let me say .. Thank god I know how to advocate for myself. I am still so so sick however just located an doc who specializes in This field. If this doesn’t detox, I’m off to Dallas or Fla for treatment, insurance does not recognize this illness. It is ridiculous .
Sorry to butt in here. . But does testing animal urine really work? If so who tests it? I rented a house in 2010 and my grandmother lived with me as I took care of her and worked everyday. She was 71 when we got here. . First it was vertigo. . Then vision problems. . . Memory loss . . Respitory arrest. . . And finally long term permenant care at a facility. I associated it to old age. . Meanwhile my dog loses all of the back half of his hair on his butt yearly to regrow it and lose it again. . .moving on to me. . . I started having sever problems with respitory issues in2012 which lead to a heart attack in 2014. When I was at the hospital I felt 25 again but I got home and kept getting sick. . I began to develops all of the same symptoms as my granny did prior. . . I’ve had pneumonia 4 times since 2014 . . Frequent urination constant thirst blurry vision mood swings light sensitivity vertigo and so on. 6 1/2 yrs ago when I moved in here I was 33 and in prime physical condition. . . Now some days I can’t get out of bed. . 5 days ago I moved a shelf in my bedroom corner and the baseboard split open where they meet at the wall and there is a spidering rash of mold running in both directions on the baseboards and creeping up the wall. . Since my grandmother’s departure to the facility her health has improved. My now fiance moved in 2 yrs ago and is 9 months pregnant. . Her 3 small kids all under age 10 live here and they are always sick too. . . The dog has been here all along but the vet said we can’t test his blood for mold. . . My doctor says I’m crazy. . . But it all makes sense. . I need to find a way to prove I’m right. .
Sometimes the signs are not as evident. It may grow in places where you can’t see it, like behind a wall or under a carpet. If you begin experiencing an allergic reaction or suddenly having respiratory problems, you should check for signs of black mold.
Be eco-friendly by repurposing old furniture instead of throwing it away. It diverts waste from landfills and prevents the harvesting of new trees. In this project, an old armoire was turned into a drop-down game table and storage console.
Recognizing the sources of mold growth and the costs of letting them go is the first step to mastering this situation. The next step is understanding exactly what your home insurance policy does and does not cover when it comes to mold and water damage—two different things. Once you understand your the risks that mold poses specifically to your family and property, you can learn to control it.
The number and range of devices on the market in both of these categories is mind-boggling, and I’ve spent countless hours figuring out the best options for our home. My research is ongoing, but currently this is what we are using:
Kirei board is made from sorghum stalks, which are typically burned or thrown into landfills after the edible portion is harvested. Kirei wood is made with non-toxic adhesive that does not emit formaldehyde.
There are many steps to reduce exposure. For example, replace vinyl wallcoverings with Cradle-to-Cradle-certified ones made with new polymers and water-based inks and coatings. If dry-cleaned goods have a strong chemical odor, which indicates a high concentration of the solvent PERC (perchloroethylene), do not accept them until they have been properly dried. Use non- or low-VOC paints, glues, epoxies, adhesives and building products. Even when using low-VOC products, ventilate the space with plenty of fresh air. Dispose of even small amounts you won’t use right away in an environmentally responsible way.
Step 7: Allow the paper towels to thoroughly dry out to the point where they start falling off the walls. Peel them off, using your gloves if there is any dampness in the towels. You are done! Try taking some before and after pictures to remind yourself how effective this procedure is. You can use chlorine bleach instead of peroxide, it just smells way worse for a long time. Note- the strong peroxide puts out a lot of oxygen and ozone in the air. Use plenty of ventilation as the ozone can sting your eyes.
Use the spray bottle to spray and wipe away any remaining mold areas from the rubber seal. Be sure to pull/push it gently to get in the grooves where moisture can grow and mold can develop. Wearing rubber gloves will protect your hands from the bleach.
Or maybe, you have a rain exposed deck like mine that does not get enough sunlight due to tree cover. And, if I do not get the leaves removed quickly, I will have mold growing on my wooden deck in short order.
Another set of experiments suggests that slime molds navigate time as well as space, using a rudimentary internal clock to anticipate and prepare for future changes in their environments. Tetsu Saigusa of Hokkaido University and his colleagues—including Nakagaki—placed a polycephalum in a kind of groove in an agar plate stored in a warm and moist environment (slime molds thrive in high humidity). The slime mold crawled along the groove. Every 30 minutes, however, the scientists suddenly dropped the temperature and decreased the humidity, subjecting the polycephalum to unfavorably dry conditions. The slime mold instinctively began to crawl more slowly, saving its energy. After a few trials, Saigusa and his colleagues stopped changing the slime mold’s environment, but every 30 minutes the amoeba’s pace slowed anyway. Eventually it stopped slowing down spontaneously. Slime molds did the same thing at intervals of 60 and 90 minutes, although, on average, only about half of the slime molds tested showed spontaneous slowing in the absence of an environmental change.Because the slime mold cannot rely on its slime for this trick, Saigusa speculates that it instead depends on an internal mechanism of some kind, perhaps involving the perpetually pulsating gelatinous contents of its one cell, known as cytoplasm. The slime mold’s membrane rhythmically constricts and relaxes, keeping the cytoplasm within flowing. When the amoeba’s membrane encounters food, it pulsates more quickly and expands, allowing more cytoplasm to flow into that region; when it stumbles onto something aversive—such as bright light—its palpitations slow down and cytoplasm moves elsewhere. Somehow, the slime mold may be keeping track of its own rhythmic pulsing, creating a kind of simple clock that would allow it to anticipate future events.
In other words, the single-celled brainless amoebae did not grow living branches between pieces of food in a random manner; rather, they behaved like a team of human engineers, growing the most efficient networks possible. Just as engineers design railways to get people from one city to another as quickly as possible, given the terrain—only laying down the building materials that are needed—the slime molds hit upon the most economical routes from one morsel to another, conserving energy. Andrew Adamatzky of the University of the West of England Bristol and other researchers were so impressed with the protists’ behaviors that they have proposed using slime molds to help plan future roadway construction, either with a living protist or a computer program that adopts its decision-making process. Researchers have also simulated real-world geographic constraints like volcanoes and bodies of water by confronting the slime mold with deterrents that it must circumvent, such as bits of salt or beams of light.
The mold killing agent in the bleach (chlorine) simply does not reach the root and instead, leaves the moisture content of the bleach behind in its wake. This same moisture is what promotes additional mold growth to the area just cleaned.
Whatever your climate, the DOE recommends three basic measures to control moisture: installing a polyethylene ground cover on the earth floor of a house with a crawlspace and sloping the ground away from the foundation of the house; installing a continuous vapor barrier in a climate zone with a perm rating of less than 1; and placing a termite shield, sill gaskets or other vapor-impermeable membrane on the top of the foundation wall to prevent moisture from wicking into the framed wall from the concrete foundation wall by capillary action.
Thanks for the input I worked for Melaleuca so I have a bottle of green tea oil and I will be using vinger to clean my bathroom floor. I have two small children so I didn’t want to use anything to harm them. This is great. I love that I can use house hold items to get rid of my mold problem.
The word “rash” means an outbreak of red bumps on the body. The way people use this term, “a rash” can refer to many different skin conditions. The most common of these are scaly patches of skin and red, itchy bumps or patches all over the place.
Press Board and other fake sheets of wood are the reason why there are rules in the USA (and the USA is the worst of all 1st world nations on taking environmental issue seriously) concerning prefab homes and mobile homes. They are basically BUILT with press board, oriented strand board and plywood (fake wood). When they started making prefabs REAL houses were not made with any of that except for some plywood. The rules in the USA state that *ALL* the air in a prefab (or equivalent) home must be fully vented (completely exchanged) every few minutes by a special system built into the house.
Before removing any black mold, gear up: Don disposable coveralls, rubber gloves, airtight safety goggles, and a face mask/respirator. This protective gear will reduce the risk of health issues that may result from exposure to the substance, including respiratory infections, allergic reactions, joint inflammation, and rashes. Because a single black mold spore hitting your eye can even induce blindness, you don’t want to cut any corners.
Generally, it is not necessary to identify the species of mold growing in a residence, and CDC does not recommend routine sampling for molds. Current evidence indicates that allergies are the type of diseases most often associated with molds. Since the reaction of individuals can vary greatly either because of the person’s susceptibility or type and amount of mold present, sampling and culturing are not reliable in determining your health risk. If you are susceptible to mold and mold is seen or smelled, there is a potential health risk; therefore, no matter what type of mold is present, you should arrange for its removal. Furthermore, reliable sampling for mold can be expensive, and standards for judging what is and what is not an acceptable or tolerable quantity of mold have not been established.

There are no EPA or government standards that have been established for mold or mold spore levels in residential or commercial areas, so it is impossible to prove that a building or room is in compliance with any health regulations concerning mold exposure.
Bleach: Use a ratio of 1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water. Spray it on and don’t bother rinsing. Bleach cannot completely kill mold growing in porous materials. It only kills the top surface and, if left in a pool, it creates a moist area that invites mold to grow back. Another disadvantage of using bleach is that it emits corrosive chemical fumes and will damage cloth and other porous materials.
Forgot to empty the washing machine straight away? You may end up with mouldy clothes! These unsightly spots of brown, grey, black, or green can also develop if you leave wet clothes or towels lurking in a heap at the bottom of the laundry basket, or store fabrics in a damp place. Thankfully, it’s not too difficult to remove mould on clothes. This guide explores different techniques and products to remove mould from clothes, as well as advice on using Persil Powercaps washing capsules as a follow up to mould stain removal.
It’s impossible to get rid of all mold and mold spores in your home, but because mold spores can’t grow without moisture, reducing moisture in your home is the best way to prevent or eliminate mold growth. If there is already mold growing in your home, it’s important to clean up the mold and fix the problem causing dampness. If you clean up the mold but don’t fix the problem, the mold will most likely return.
I want to encourage you to do a healthy vegan diet. That way you’ll get the fiber and nutrients your digestive system needs so that you can tolerate Cholestyromine. All my Drs. except one said I would be bedridden if I wasn’t on a vegan diet. And none of my Drs. are vegan. And I was able to do Cholestyromine no problem.
Toxin-producing black mold can cause serious black mold symptoms in adults and children. It can also cause extensive damage to your home as well as your health. I hope this article helps you to better understand how to identify, prevent and completely eliminate black mold from your life in every way. Remember that the No. 1 key to black mold prevention is moisture control.
Montelukast. Montelukast (Singulair) is a tablet taken to block the action of leukotrienes — immune system chemicals that cause allergy symptoms such as excess mucus. It has proved effective in treating allergic asthma, and it’s also effective in treating mold allergy.
Virtually everyone we’ve tested in our practice has a susceptible HLA haplotype, which would mean most patients that test positive for heavy metal toxicity have susceptible haplotypes. But that association could be purely due to chance; more formal research would have to be done to establish a true correlation.
Any rubber seals that are exposed to constant moisture are at risk for developing mold. For obvious reasons, washing machines are a common victim. If not removed, the mold develops and odor and transfers onto clothing during the wash cycle. Removing this mold can take some work, but it can be done. Once the mold is removed, see our additional tips for ways to keep it from returning. Before using the bleach method below, check your owner’s manual to ensure the gaskets are bleach tolerable.
When approaching a mold removal and cleaning project, one of the most important considerations is the potential risk from mold exposure (see Health Effects of Indoor Mold). Mold counts in the air can be 10 to 1,000 times higher than normal during a removal or cleaning project. Because of the potential health risks from mold exposure, it is advisable, particularly for larger (greater than 30 square feet) contamination situations, to contact a mold remediation contractor (see Hiring a Mold Consultant or Contractor). Individuals who have allergies, asthma or respiratory disease; are immunosuppressed; or have other health problems should not take part in a during mold removal/cleaning project or be in the general area of the project.
You can’t see, taste or smell carbon monoxide (CO), a toxic gas produced by incomplete combustion of fuel-burning devices, and people often dismiss the symptoms of CO poisoning (headache, nausea, dizziness and confusion), which can be fatal. This “silent killer” accounts for an estimated 15,000 emergency room visits and 500 deaths a year.
A few types of mold are highly toxic. If you have an allergic reaction to mold or a heavy infestation inside your home, call in a pro to analyze the types. Or call your local public heath department and ask for mold-testing advice.
For people sensitive to mold, inhaling or touching mold spores can cause allergic reactions, including sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash. People with serious mold allergies may have more severe reactions, including shortness of breath. In people with asthma who are allergic to mold, breathing in spores can also cause asthma attacks.
Turn on vents and fans. To help draw mold spores out of the room and out of the house, turn on any exhaust fans in the room you’re working in. You can also position a fan in front of an open window and aim it outside. This will similarly draw mold spores out of the room and push them outside.
This is a major cause for mold growth in attics and basements. An easy solution is to make sure your basement or attic has air flow. Open the windows (even slightly) just to let fresh air in. It is also a good idea to turn on a fan to get stagnant air moving especially if you do not have a home air conditioning system.
If you use the recommended ratio of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water, then there should be no need for an additional rinsing of the drywall. Keep the area well-ventilated and have a fan on the cleaned area. It will dry without issue. However, using a stain-blocking primer prior to repainting is highly recommended.
This is great information. I prefer using household pantry items for cleaning. I have a problem with mold and mildew building up in the shower. I leave my shower curtain open after showering so the moisture can dissipate, but mildew still creeps into the caulking.
I have been following your blog for nearly 5 years now and it’s been an invaluable resource through my own journey to better health, I traveled to Berkeley from Oregon on my own to your book release, you are my first resource for nearly anything health related.
Oral decongestants. OTC oral decongestants include Sudafed and Drixoral. Because oral decongestants can raise blood pressure, avoid them if you have high blood pressure (hypertension). Possible side effects include high blood pressure, insomnia, loss of appetite, heart pounding (palpitations), anxiety and restlessness.
