what type of mold is toxic | remove black mold on face

Molds are part of the natural environment, and can be found everywhere, indoors and outdoors. Mold is not usually a problem, unless it begins growing indoors. The best way to control mold growth is to control moisture. This website provides guidance about mold and moisture for homes, schools, multifamily and commercial buildings. Molds can have a big impact on indoor air quality.
Wear an N-95 respirator to avoid breathing in mold or mold spores. N-95 respirators may be found in many hardware stores and from companies that advertise on the Internet. In order to be effective, the respirator or mask must fit properly, so carefully follow the instructions supplied with the respirator.
As a naturally occurring and pervasive substance in our world, mold exists in a variety of different forms—many of which are non-toxic and mainly affect those with allergies and asthma. Black mold, specifically, though, is a more serious offender. Exposure to the toxic variety of Stachybotrys chartarum can cause respiratory issues ranging from mild to severe. It, like most kinds of mold, grows at an alarming rate in the right conditions—namely in places with prolonged exposure to moisture and humidity, such as basements, bathrooms, under-sink cabinets, or recently flooded areas. For this reason, homeowners should take action at first sign of it, and learn how to remove black mold before it transforms from a benign player to an invasive species.
Quick and easy to install, these carpet tiles are made from 80 percent post-consumer recycled poly fiber. They are stain-repellent and won’t trap dirt like traditional carpets, thereby reducing allergens in the air. But, if the squares do become dirty, you can just replace the individual squares and not the entire carpet.
Luckily, I’ve been able to pinpoint the sources! I wasn’t able to purchase new furniture due to the expense of a major move. I have a faux or leather recliner, micro- fiber couch, solid wood dresser and bookshelf, that are painted(all from the previous dwelling. At this time I don’t have a choice but to keep them. Though I cleaned clothing in hot water and got rid of household items that were effected, I was hoping you would give your thoughts/ recommendations..? Can I use any of the natural remedies on the upholstery? Wondering if I put one or a combo of the essential oils you speak of, in my hand held steamer or steam cleaner, that I can save our health (including our sm dog, who now has respiratory and rash issues) and my furnishings? Thank you for taking the time to read my fears. Desperately and Sincerely…
Set an old box fan or a cheap new one in a window to ventilate the room while working. Throw it out when you’re done cleaning, because the spores are almost impossible to clean off. Tape plywood or cardboard around the window openings so the spores can’t blow back in.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has listed the absence of AFCIs among the primary residential hazards associated with burns and fire-related injuries, and the NFPA’s National Electrical Code now requires that they be used to protect almost every circuit in the home.
Hi, I’ve done my bit of research and it doesn’t matter what make you have as long as you look after it. Washing gels aren’t ideal; they’re more likely to cause mold. Also, don’t try to be economic by always washing at 30 degrees C, that’s what’s ruining your washing machine. I do washes at 40 and 60 degrees, you need at least a 60 degree wash to kill most of the bacteria, if you want to kill all the bacteria, use a 90 degree wash every now and then.
Windshields, stemware and beverage bottles are bound together with concrete and fly ash (a waste by-product of coal-burning power plants) as opposed to a petroleum-based resin binder. The countertops are comparable to granite in terms of strength, scratch resistance, heat resistance and maintenance.
Toxic black mold affects different people in different ways. Some people won’t experience symptoms as severe as what others experience. Children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems are usually the worst affected by toxic black mold.
CIRS was originally defined by Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker, a former family physician in Maryland. (Dr. Shoemaker is now retired, but he is still actively involved in raising awareness and advancing the understanding of CIRS.
Made of tree pulp taken from strictly managed sustainable forests, paper-based countertops are a great alternative to stone and plastic surfaces. They come in a variety of colors and are mostly stain-, scratch- and heat-resistant.
Cutting-edge, while more expensive mold remediation methods may include, using ice pellets or sand and walnut shells to blast mold away from your basement walls and removing mold in your attic from the wood sheathing and overhead beams.
Reading all comments about the rubber seals around washing machines doors. I do have this problem with mould around the shower split doors. I have tried nearly everything, but nothing works. Would your method of cleaning the washing be any good on the rubber seals on my shower unit? Many thanks. John.
Thanks for the tip to use ice pellets or sand to blast away mold from your basement walls! You also said that tea tree is a natural fungicide that is effective at killing black mold spores. I think it’s important to choose a mold and mildew service that tells you why you have mold in your home so that you can prevent it from happening again later on.
Mold is found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the air outside can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, bags, and pets can and be carried indoors.
Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis is an inflammation of the lung caused by small airborne particles such as bacteria, mold, fungi, or inorganic matter. There are two types of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, acute and chronic. Symptoms include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, body aches. Examples of hypersensitivity pneumonitis include bagassosis, mushroom worker’s disease, sauna taker’s disease, pigeon breeder’s disease, and farmer’s lung disease. Most commonly, it results from exposure to pet birds.
It depends on how small it is. If it is only about a foot square or so, then probably not. Keep in mind, however, that if you see a little bit in an obvious place, there’s probably a lot more you don’t see.
If mold and related substances seem to be causing adverse health effects, removal from the damp place is a necessary part of prevention and treatment. Storey and colleagues provide several case studies of people who developed allergies, bronchitis, and asthma when spending time in damp spaces. Avoiding those places decreased symptoms and re-exposure caused symptoms to recur.2 Unquestionably, removing people from those environments until dampness was controlled and mold removed was indicated in those cases, even if the precise cause of illness could not be determined.

What We Do

Tracy, so sorry to hear about your illness. I was just diagnosed with mycotoxin illness, CIRS (chronic inflammatory response syndrome), hypothyroid, Hashimoto’s thyroid it’s in Feb of this yr, 2016 due to a minor water problem July 25,2012 that the supposed remidiators didn’t handle properly…and mold grew within 2 days. After 3mths of arguing and pleading with insurance and the ass holes that were yelling at me saying there is no problem cuz they are the professionals, I got permission from insurance to call an air quality specialist to come find the mold…that insurance KNEW was here cuz they were here many times and smelled it. They found mold right away and recommended a full remediation of the finished basement where the pipe had burst. The only prob is that NO ONE told me to shut off the HVAC and so the mold and mycotoxins were being pulled throughout the whole house and have contamminated EVERYTHING I own…everything! I have to move out and never come back and start over. I started with asthma within 2 days, then urinary pain, frequency and horrible pressure within a mth and was seeing a urologist who did surgery on me that I didn’t need and over active bladder meds which did nothing…I’ve never been in so much pain in my life and it never stopped. I switched to another dr…a urogynocologist who jerked me around and lots of meds and a bladder repair that she said would help with the pain and freq did nothing to help…and I’m left with a $2,300 bill AND no relief. Then I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer…after losing 2 cats to cancer before this and after the mold..so I started to get suspicious that there might be a correlation. I went through chemo…and now I have found out there are many ways to cure cancer without surgery, chemo or radiation and my legs are ruined from nerve damage. My eyes got blurry and I was running to the eye dr asking him over and over and over to change my lenses cuz I still couldn’t see. I had a very serious bout of depression in March of 2013…7-8mths after my exposure…and I like you were house bound 24-7 with my cats cuz I had a seizure disorder at the time and couldn’t drive. Also I just read many times over that if mold is suspected and especially during remediation…NO BLOWERS of any kind should be used cuz they also blow the mold spores I tot he air and they get into everything..theses “professionals” that were here had blowers to “dry out the walls and carpet” which I found out you can’t do and they should have cut out the walls and taken up the carpet within 24-48hrs and then none of this would have happened! I started having terrible muscle pain and joint pain…especially my hips and fingers. Freq migraine headaches…and no sleep at all especially cuz I had to pee every 30mins around the clock. Then they think your a complainer so they suggest you “see someone” like a psychiatrist for meds which has happened to almost all of use effected by this illness. Oh, and the ANGERY issues I have…they call it mold rage…so don’t piss me off! I started yelling and cursing at people on the phone and in person and was blaming it on the seizure meds or menopause and crying cuz I’d feel so bad when I directed it toward my son who was away at college…he still dosent believe me that it’s the illness. I’m so dehydrated all the time and my skin actually burns if I don’t keep drinking cuz all I do is pee. There are so many other problems I have that it would take days for m to tell…but you get the idea. I just watched a short movie by Dave Aspry called “the movie MOLD” or MOLDY about his effects and he was one of the geniuses who discovered “the cloud” for the Internet..so you know he’s credible. I saw a lot of Drs and my long time interest after I brought him the lab results confirming I have all the above things wrong with me after he was blowing me off for yrs said ther is nothing wrong with me, mold doesn’t make anyone sick and they are lying to me to make money and the people that write these books just want fame and I don’t have pain and the peeing has nothing to do with mold and I don’t have hypothyroid and don’t worry about a little Hashi etc and then walked out of the room and b=never came back. Then I just on Friday saw a endocrinologist to get more thyroid and I’d never seen her and she was listed as a top dr in Nj….insulted me, made faces and fun of me cuz I went organic and I believe in mold illness and I don’t have hypo and there is nothing to do for Hashi I just have to live with it and she’s a professional who goes to all the meetngs and none of us believe in mold making anyone sick…and then I told her she’s narrow minded and ignorant and MAYBE she should listen and hear from someone like me who’s life has been turned upside down from this BEFORE she shuts the door on the possibility that this DOESNT exist CUZ I KNOW IT DOES AND THE LABS AND MY SYMPTOMS PROVE IT! She was not happy with me and I just walked out. I’m a nurse who always respected rd..but I don’t now and not just because of this illness but because I’d been mis managed for 5 yrs before reguarding something else. They don’t know nearly as much as we give them credit for so listen to YOUR gut and if you think your onto something DONT give up until you find someone who believes you. I’m not sure where you live on the east coast, but I live in Nj and happened to land in a Drs office down the shore in Springlake,NJ about something else and he had just finished his certification with Dr Shoemaker on mold and he FINALLY asked all the right questions about my water prob and mold and sent me to my lab with a mile long slip and 2weeks later I finally had the answers to my suffering for 4 very long yrs. mycotoxin illness/CIRS, Hashimoto’s disease/hypothyroid/ low iodine/low iron. I really would suggest cuz your quite sick si to maybe if you don’t live hrs away from the early part of the jersey shore, is to call DR Rothman and talk to his nurse Brenda and see what she thinks. It may save you lot of money and time to go to someone who believes in mold illness, knows the symptoms and most importantly the correct tests to run and either it will give you your answers or not and if it is something else he’ll be the one to figure it out. He gives you an 1 1/2 for the 1st appointment and you have to pay out of pocket but lab Corp runs the tests and my insurance covered that. I would at least call…you have nothing to lose at this point! His # is 732-268-7663. Good luck!
Chronic rhinitis and post-nasal drip symptoms include an itchy, runny nose, sneezing, itchy ears, eyes, and throat. Seasonal allergic rhinitis (also called hay fever) usually is caused by pollen in the air. Perennial allergic rhinitis is a type of chronic rhinitis and is a year-round problem, often caused by indoor allergens, such as dust, animal dander, and pollens that may exist at the time. Treatment of chronic rhinitis and post nasal drip are dependent upon the type of rhinitis condition.
The best treatment for any allergy is to take steps to avoid exposure to your triggers. However, molds are common, and you can’t completely avoid them. While there’s no sure way to cure allergic rhinitis caused by a mold allergy, a number of medications can ease your symptoms. These include:
Insurance companies are getting tired of mold too. Even if your insurance does cover some water damage many companies now explicitly limit or completely exclude coverage mold-related damage, regardless of the source

Chris: what were your daughter’s symptoms? My 1,5 year old daughter has some issues that are too mild for normal physicians to take seriously, but bad enough that Ive been reading and reading for months, trying to figure things out, going crazy, you must know the feeling. Wonder what the symptoms could be like in a toddler.
Another set of experiments suggests that slime molds navigate time as well as space, using a rudimentary internal clock to anticipate and prepare for future changes in their environments. Tetsu Saigusa of Hokkaido University and his colleagues—including Nakagaki—placed a polycephalum in a kind of groove in an agar plate stored in a warm and moist environment (slime molds thrive in high humidity). The slime mold crawled along the groove. Every 30 minutes, however, the scientists suddenly dropped the temperature and decreased the humidity, subjecting the polycephalum to unfavorably dry conditions. The slime mold instinctively began to crawl more slowly, saving its energy. After a few trials, Saigusa and his colleagues stopped changing the slime mold’s environment, but every 30 minutes the amoeba’s pace slowed anyway. Eventually it stopped slowing down spontaneously. Slime molds did the same thing at intervals of 60 and 90 minutes, although, on average, only about half of the slime molds tested showed spontaneous slowing in the absence of an environmental change.
First, locate the source of mold in your home. Black mold can be identified by its often-slimy texture, dark-greenish/black (sometimes gray) color, and growth that appears as spots or patches that spread over time. Common sources of black mold include corners, covered areas under sinks or cupboards, baseboards, under cardboard boxes in the basement, and anywhere else with high levels of moisture. Pay attention to your nose, and follow musty scent of black mold to locate the source. A flashlight will help you inspect nooks, crannies, and dark corners.
Next, seal any doorways or other openings leading to other areas of the home, place heavy plastic over them, then seal the plastic in place with duct tape. If there are outdoor openings in the room, place an exhaust fan near them to help remove mold spores from the room.
The awareness of toxic mold’s effect on human health has increased dramatically over the past few years. But mold is only one of the many biotoxins found in water-damaged buildings, and the illness caused by exposure to these toxins is much more complex than most clinicians and patients assume.
Sight and smell may give you a good indication of whether or not you have a black mold problem — black mold tends to have a strong, musty smell, and of course it displays a trademark black color. If you believe you have black mold growth in an area of your home after these initial inspections, you have two options: professional mold testing or do-it-yourself testing.
Compared with most organisms, slime molds have been on the planet for a very long time—they first evolved at least 600 million years ago and perhaps as long as one billion years ago. At the time, no organisms had yet evolved brains or even simple nervous systems. Yet slime molds do not blindly ooze from one place to another—they carefully explore their environments, seeking the most efficient routes between resources. They do not accept whatever circumstances they find themselves in, but rather choose conditions most amenable to their survival. They remember, anticipate and decide. By doing so much with so little, slime molds represent a successful and admirable alternative to convoluted brain-based intelligence. You might say that they break the mold.
Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, exposure to molds can lead to symptoms such as stuffy nose, wheezing, and red or itchy eyes, or skin. Some people, such as those with allergies to molds or with asthma, may have more intense reactions. Severe reactions may occur among workers exposed to large amounts of molds in occupational settings, such as farmers working around moldy hay. Severe reactions may include fever and shortness of breath.

You can also take medications to reduce your allergic reaction to mold. There is medicine for allergies which you can buy directly from the pharmacy such as claratyne or zyrtec or there is medication which a doctor can prescribe for you. These usually come in the form of pills or nasal sprays.
If you have high humidity in your home, keep a dehumidifier or air conditioner going AND make sure that it’s emptied often. Some people may not realize that mold can also grow inside the water container in a dehumidifier.
I have this model too and recently noticed the mold. Maybe I need to go back to the powder detergent and stop using the pods. I stuffed rags soaked with Clorox all around the gasket and left it for two days. It is better, but still there. This is after I tried running two cycles with Simple Green and scrubbing the gasket with Clorox and a brush. I am now leaving the door open and hoping it helps.
MOLECULAR MEMORY: Common bread wheat (Triticum aestivum), also known as “winter wheat,” only flowers and makes grain following a cold winter. If winter snows do not blanket the sprouts, they never flower. But if prior to planting, farmers keep the seeds in the freezer for a while, then the sprouts will flower even in the absence of snow. In other words, the plants remember their exposure to the cold. How do they encode this memory? The cold induces characteristic changes in the pattern of molecules hitched to DNA, a process known as epigenetics that in turn modifies gene expression. Bluemoose, Wikimedia Commons
How to Remove Black Mold. Mold is a problem that can stick around forever if not treated properly the first time. Black mold is very toxic and can cause sickness and even death in certain cases. Removing mold completely is the only way to rid your home of the spores and dust. Learn how to remove black mold and keep your home safe.
One non-toxic cleaning agent for mold removal is “Molderizer” and you can get it in 32oz as well as by the gallon. I believe the 32oz can be found for under $20 and the gallon size for just under $50.
The main problem I have with mold is in the caulk around the shower against the stainless steel glass door frame, and around the sink.. Do you need to rinse the vinegar off once you spray these areas down? Will the vinegar corrode the stainless steel if left on too long?
You should also aim to keep humidity down in your home — ideally, not higher than 50 percent. If humidity is a problem where you live, then a dehumidifier can be helpful. This is especially important when the weather is humid outdoors. In warmer months, an air conditioner can help to keep the humidity down.
Can it cause severe itching, burning and prickly feeling on the skin if you touched it while cleaning and vacuuming the rug where it was? Bc now I’m not sure if it’s mold or a parasite or both. How do you rule that out? Thank you.
Another disadvantage of using ammonia is that it is a harsh, toxic chemical. Make sure you never mix ammonia with bleach because the gas they create when combined is toxic. Chlorine mixed with ammonia was even used as a chemical weapon during World War 2.
Hi Patricia. I don’t know whether I tried the baking soda method based on just knowledge of baking soda, or having read someplace about its use for reducing mold odors. I have been participating in online discussion groups such as the GreenCanary email list on Yahoo! Groups for a long time. This method (storing books with baking soda) would be useless with live mold. Mold spores give off toxic chemicals that are by-products of their digestion, and these chemicals can inundate any material that is in the environment. Some items, such as a glass table, would be easily cleaned or would soon off-gas the chemicals once the live mold has been removed, but things such as books can absorb a lot of them and they remain for a long time. I did have a lot of success storing moldy-smelling things in a room with an air purifier (an Austin Air that has a lot of carbon in the filter). Books do not clean well this way though unless they are propped so that the pages are open slightly. I had some things that just could not be saved, for instance an antique storage trunk that visible mold colonies were infesting the interior paper lining. Other things such as clock radio/kitchen appliances/etc. I disassembled and cleaned as many parts as I could, leaving parts out in sunlight. That seemed to eradicate the mold odors in most cases, it’s a lot of work though! It’s difficult to sum up the methods for cleaning mold toxins from things. Various things need various methods. The acidity of vinegar can be useful for things that can tolerate it, I have used a spray bottle with diluted vinegar on box fans and other sturdy types of appliances that can be washed. Things that can’t be washed with water, often storing with baking soda or activated charcoal is the best thing. It seems like you have a good awareness about detoxing laundry. I find hanging things out in sunlight, if they’re fabric or something that do not have hidden areas like an appliance does, cleans them faster and easier than anything else. I was soaking some clothing items in changes of dishsoapy or detergent water for many weeks, they still reeked of mold, then I hung them outside for a few days and the mold smells vanished.
I don’t ask you to dramatically change what you’re doing, what you’re doing is great: and no, it’s not your fault that the “healthcare” system in this country is effed, or that access to healthy food, water, air, housing is heavily stratified among class and race lines…I merely ask that you lower your blinders just a little, to give a little nod to the masses that aren’t in your economic class, because some of us DO follow you. this could mean simply acknowledging the relatively inaccessibility of many of your suggestions, or even the occasional suggestion of lower-cost alternatives, or links to resources. Otherwise your efforts merely benefit the upper classes.
Also, make sure to properly ventilate your home. It’s especially important to have exhaust fans in your bathrooms and kitchen. Make sure not to carpet your bathroom(s) because this will only increase the trapping of moisture. You should also remove and replace any carpets in your home that have experienced flooding.

Besides considering your signs and symptoms, your doctor may want to conduct a physical examination to identify or exclude other medical problems. He or she may also recommend one or more tests to see if you have an allergy that can be identified. These include:

No this is not true. If you are among the 25% of the population that is susceptible to mold, your body has a hard time getting the toxins out of the system. Unless you are in an extremely pristine environment, you are not likely get better. Binders such as Cholestyramine are needed, in addition to being in a mold free environment. I would suggest going to a different doctor, e.g. one of the Shoemaker certified one (complete list on http://www.survivingmold.com.
Identify black mold. Black mold often grows in damp areas, places that are often wet, or places where there has been a leak or water damage. Common places to find black mold include basements, crawl spaces, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. Here are a few of the identifying characteristics of black mold:[1]

The main way to prevent black mold infestation and black mold exposure is moisture control. If you have a water leak or flooding, address the source of the water to prevent mold growth. If you’re having trouble in your bathroom and don’t have an exhaust fan, then it’s a a good idea to install one.
Use vinegar straight from bottle, spray on and scrub or apply with cloth. Use the baking soda mixture (below) to finish the job this helps make sure you get all the mold. It also prevents mold from returning.

Bleach will definitely work to effectively kill black mold. However, it’s ideal not to turn to bleach since bleach comes with so many concerning health side effects, including irritation to the eyes, mouth, lungs and skin. If you have asthma or another breathing problem, then the use of bleach is even more health-hazardous. Bleach can also burn human tissue, both internally and externally, especially in small children. I’ve been using stuff from the store to clean my molds. They are effective but very strong, sometimes I feel a weakness in my arms from their strength. For this reason, using something natural like those you’ve listed here is most helpful. Voted interesting and useful. Great hub!
Removing black mold with baking soda is a great green cleaning solution for the home. As an alternative to bleach and ammonia, baking soda does a pretty good job (with a little elbow grease) at eliminating black mold and its odors.

Chris, I’m curious what your thoughts are on how extreme we need to take “getting rid of our belongings.” Literally, just last week we found out we’re dealing with a great deal of mold which likely explains our entire family’s health issues despite following a functional medicine lifestyle for years. We’re going to have the remediation done and have opted to also have all of our carpeting removed and flooring replaced. Do we truly need to consider getting rid of most of our personal belongings as well? I realize you may not want to make a blanket statement but would love any comments you do have to share. Thank you!
I want to encourage you to do a healthy vegan diet. That way you’ll get the fiber and nutrients your digestive system needs so that you can tolerate Cholestyromine. All my Drs. except one said I would be bedridden if I wasn’t on a vegan diet. And none of my Drs. are vegan. And I was able to do Cholestyromine no problem.
Step 1: Buy a gallon of concentrated Hydrogen Peroxide, 27%, at a swimming pool or hot tub supply store. Just go to any place that sells hot tubs. Blackthorne Spas in Salinas, California, sells a two-gallon package of hydrogen peroxide for $34. That’s a LOT of peroxide. More than enough to do your whole house.
Many patients have stated that they became convinced that toxic mold was a factor in their illness not by any sort of medical testing but rather by getting totally away from their usual environment (including building, location and possessions) for an extended period of time and then observing their reactions to it when this “sabbatical” was over.
To date, a possible association between acute idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage among infants and Stachybotrys chartarum (Stachybotrys atra) has not been proved. Further studies are needed to determine what causes acute idiopathic hemorrhage.
Allergic reactions to mold are the most common health effects of mold and are therefore the greatest health risk related to mold. Allergic reactions may happen immediately or develop after a period of time following exposure. Both growing mold and mold spores may lead to allergic reactions. Symptoms and signs of mold allergy may include
You probably don’t need to have your air ducts cleaned unless there is mold growing inside, they are infested with vermin or they are excessively clogged with debris. Duct cleaning costs between $400 and $1,000. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association cautions consumers against air duct cleaning companies that make sweeping claims about health benefits of their services and/or are not upfront about fees.
The more insidious and ubiquitous molds, though, produce no acutely dangerous mycotoxins but can still trigger inflammatory reactions, allergies, and asthma. The degree of impact from these exposure in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina is still being studied.
One issue is whether to undertake environmental assessments for the presence of mold or other airborne substances found in damp homes, schools, and workplaces. If someone does develop respiratory conditions in a given location only, an environmental assessment may be indicated if there are no other known triggers. These conditions include asthma (either newly diagnosed or worsening of existing asthma), the lung conditions called interstitial lung disease and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, sarcoidosis, and recurring cold-like symptoms, sinus infections, and hoarseness.2
Always wear protective gear when removing mold. Use a disposable dust mask to prevent yourself from breathing in too many of the mold spores. Wear safety goggles and household rubber gloves to protect your eyes and skin from both the mold and any chemicals you use to remove it.
Mold removal products are an important part of keeping your home not only clean but also safe. Mold and other contaminants can cause a wide variety of health problems which we’ll talk about in more detail in this guide.
Because the slime mold cannot rely on its slime for this trick, Saigusa speculates that it instead depends on an internal mechanism of some kind, perhaps involving the perpetually pulsating gelatinous contents of its one cell, known as cytoplasm. The slime mold’s membrane rhythmically constricts and relaxes, keeping the cytoplasm within flowing. When the amoeba’s membrane encounters food, it pulsates more quickly and expands, allowing more cytoplasm to flow into that region; when it stumbles onto something aversive—such as bright light—its palpitations slow down and cytoplasm moves elsewhere. Somehow, the slime mold may be keeping track of its own rhythmic pulsing, creating a kind of simple clock that would allow it to anticipate future events.
Under his administration, the funding of science to better understand the health consequences of mold exposure stands to be slashed. Meanwhile, the significance of mold in human lives is expected to increase with rising sea levels and catastrophic weather events. The perennial intensification of severe weather patterns over the Gulf Coast has made flooding increasingly common, at least partly due to the warming of the ocean.
Next, seal any doorways or other openings leading to other areas of the home, place heavy plastic over them, then seal the plastic in place with duct tape. If there are outdoor openings in the room, place an exhaust fan near them to help remove mold spores from the room.
Robbie, there currently is no Dr.’s in Louisville that can competently treat for mold toxicity. I had to go to Chicago to see one. After the first visit, they can do appointments over the phone. However, lately there may be a few Dr.’s that are closer, that may possibly treat mold toxicity/CIRS. Send me your contact info and I can send their names/numbers to you. None of them likely take insurance, it’s usually an out of pocket expense.
Be sure to discuss any health problem with a health care professional prior to attempting to remove and clean mold if you have an allergy or are sensitive to molds. When washing with soap and water, rubber gloves are recommended, but for bleach and harsher cleaning agents, nonporous gloves (for example, natural rubber, neoprene, nitrile, polyurethane, or PVC) should be worn along with protective eyewear. Wearing an N-95 respirator (available at many hardware stores) can further limit exposure to airborne mold or spores when cleaning. Avoid touching moldy surfaces with bare hands.
I did a Bio Trek mycotoxin panel which is collected through urine. All parameters came back positive. Aflatoxin, Ochratoxin A and Trichothecene. I do have the multisuseptible gene and another mold gene. If I’m out of a moldy environment would you say I just haven’t detoxed these molds? What are your views on this panel?

The carpet is naturally pigmented, rather than dyed with harsh chemicals. The adhesive used is made from natural rubber and the backing is made from jute, both of which are robust and biodegradable.
Black mold symptoms are even worse if the black mold exposure is severe, has lasted for a long time or if the individual has a mold allergy. Symptoms could include nausea, vomiting, as well as bleeding in the nose and lungs. Studies have also linked household mold exposure to depression. (4)

What We Do

Howard Florey, Ernst Chain, Norman Heatley, Edward Abraham, also all at Oxford, continued the work.[14] They enhanced and developed the concentration technique by using organic solutions rather than water, and created the “Oxford Unit” to measure penicillin concentration within a solution. They managed to purify the solution, increasing its concentration by 45–50 times, but found that a higher concentration was possible. Experiments were conducted and the results published in 1941, though the quantities of Penicillin produced were not always high enough for the treatments required.[14] As this was during the Second World War, Florey sought USA Government involvement. With research teams in the UK and some in the US, industrial-scale production of crystallized penicillin was developed during 1941–1944 by the USDA and by Pfizer.[13][15]
Toxic black mold puts out chemicals which suppress the immune system. In fact many immunosuppressive drugs are actually created from toxic molds. A person who is immunocompromised from being around toxic black mold will more easily get infections and sicknesses.
Remove water sources that feed mold to prevent it from returning. Fix leaky pipes, add better ventilation to a humid bathroom, or install a dehumidifier to a damp basement. Dry out the rooms you find mold in to prevent additional mold from forming.
I would recommend testing your urine for mycotoxins by contacting either of the two labs listed below that offer the urine mycotoxin test and have them send you a kit to bring to your doctor. This test checks for 3 mycotoxins in the urine:
Research suggests that healing your gut may be the single most important thing you can do to improve your health. In this eBook, you’ll learn how to optimize your gut health—and by extension, your overall health—with simple diet and lifestyle changes.

toxic mold exposure | how to remove mold from bathroom walls

Nasal lavage. To help with irritating nasal symptoms, your doctor may recommend that you rinse your nose daily with salt water. Use a specially designed squeeze bottle, such as the one included in saline kits (Sinus Rinse, others), bulb syringe or neti pot to irrigate your nasal passages. This home remedy, called nasal lavage, can help keep your nose free of irritants.
Going green with tea tree oil is not as cheap as using bleach or ammonia. However, a small amount of tea tree oil will go very far in effectively getting rid of black mold. And, the environment and your lungs will thank you for it!
This fungus requires and thrives off moisture to survive. It will often appear as slimy and features a dark greenish-black(sometimes gray) coloration to it that is not often found as with other species and groups of this fungi.
I lived in a home many years ago that had mold on the walls. There wasn’t any water leak, but the home was very poorly insulated and condensation formed very easily on windows and walls allowing mold to grow.
Fungi reproduce by means of spores which are spread through the air but land and survive on surfaces. Many spores can remain dormant for long periods under dry conditions, but typically develop into fungi in the presence of moisture.
When mold has previously been identified and cleanup procedures have been undertaken, sampling and testing may be carried out if necessary by qualified professionals to determine that adequate cleaning of a building has occurred.
In the 1990s, several children in Cleveland, OH, developed pulmonary hemorrhage (bleeding in the lungs). One of those children died. A preliminary study identified exposure to mold, particularly mycotoxins from Stachybotrys chartarum, as a possible cause of these illnesses.23,24 On further review, however, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) determined that the earlier analyses were in error and that the cause remained unknown. CDC also noted that a similar cluster of cases in Chicago was not associated with mold exposure and that pulmonary hemorrhage was not consistent with what is known of exposure to this fungus.25
The term “black” mold is misleading at best. First, while the terms “toxic” and “black” mold are commonly used interchangeably, only one is recognized as black mold by most professionals: Stachybotrys chartarum, sometimes called Stachybotrys atra. Other common indoor toxic molds include – but are not limited to – Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Alternaria. Furthermore, Stachybotrys isn’t actually black, but a greenish-black color instead. Finally, with more than 100,000 known types of mold, many of them are black. Unless they are Stachybotrys, however, they aren’t “black” mold and may not even be toxic.
This illness happens after exposure to the interior environment of a Water-Damaged Building (WDB). There are many ways buildings become home to a toxic mix of microbes, and harmful chemicals. Buildings can host fungi, bacteria, mycobacteria, and actinomycetes as a result of construction defects like inappropriate ventilation, faulty construction of crawl spaces, inadequate building design, flat roofs, fake stucco cladding without adequate caulking, basements exposed to saturated ground water conditions, not correcting water leaks and more.
Getting rid of black mold in our humid Southern climate is easier said than done. We have black mold despite running two dehumidifiers, using gas heat, and running the AC during cool weather in early spring and fall to aid dehumidification. We’ve resorted to copper sulfate, which kills the mold on our concrete outer walls, but it comes right back. We are going to have to have all inner wall drywall and plaster and the carpets removed from our house. I want to move but my husband is in denial. He’s developed allergies, and it has exacerbated my lung problems I already had because I had histoplasmosis when I was a child. I’m so desperate I’ve actually thought about using a torch on the nonflammable walls to see if high heat would kill the mold.
This is the first Hub I have ever read, the advice is terrific.I have had a mold problem in the house porch since the beginning of December and was at my wits end.It looks terrible and I knew it was also a health hazard.
If you have to remove mold concentrations or perform any black mold removal covering more than a few square feet, where the musty odor is strong or where you find extensive water damage, we recommend that you take special precautions. You want to not only avoid contaminating the rest of the house but also protect yourself from breathing high concentrations of spores and VOCs.
SWIFT SWIVELING: Like Alpine buttercups, a small Asian shrub named the telegraph plant (Codariocalyx motorius) tracks the sun – not with its blooms, but with its leaves. Small leaflets attached to the base of larger leaves constantly swivel to monitor changing levels of sunlight, adjusting the position of the primary leaves as needed. The leaves move so quickly you can see them dance with the naked eye. Wikimedia Commons
I live in an apartment which is section 8. I have informed my office of all of my issues here in my apartment . I know without a doubt I’m a hundred percent sure that my home is full of toxic mold. Over all the years I’ve lived here my health has completely went downhill and I truly believe I am slowly dying . I have done so much research on this but no one wants to believe me and no one wants to help me . I am disabled and I have nowhere else to live . I have every single symptom you had mentioned and my home which I have thoroughly photographed is completely falling to pieces and there is mold everywhere . What can I do I have nowhere to go and no way to turn ? Can anyone help me ?
Toxic black mold can be costly to remove, and black mold exposure and black mold poisoning can cause a wide range of health problems, some of them severe. Understanding black mold symptoms and health effects can help you and your family identify these indicators and take swift action to protect your health and your home.
I had excellent results with this product when I had some recent water and mold issues in my basement. Its plant friendly which is awesome for restoring decks and garages with vegetation nearby and does not emit any harmful odors or harsh fumes.
Open windows. Mold itself and the cleaning products you use to kill it can irritate eyes, skin, and lungs, so you must provide yourself with as much fresh air as possible. In the area where you’re going to be attacking the mold, open as many windows as possible.[3]
Step 2: Contain the effected area. To do this, use duct tape and a plastic sheet to seal off vents or openings where air might flow in or out. You might place a small fan in an open window to direct the mold spores outdoors. Remember, mold can easily be transported to different areas in your house on pets or on the soles of shoes.
I tried the tea tree essential oil first and I was very happy with it as this killed the mold right away. The only drawbacks to using this is it can be a little expensive although a few drops does quite a good area. Tea tree oil does have a strong smell that you have to get used to, but the smell will go away in an hour or so.
Can it cause severe itching, burning and prickly feeling on the skin if you touched it while cleaning and vacuuming the rug where it was? Bc now I’m not sure if it’s mold or a parasite or both. How do you rule that out? Thank you.
I had a patient come back with a positive stachybotrys IgA level. My patient was greatly relieved to have these results as they helped her grasp that mold toxicity was the cause of her symptoms. It also helped her with her relationship, as her condition being caused by toxic mold, now had more credibility in her boyfriend’s eyes.
Toxic black mold mycotoxins can be breathed in, ingested, or absorbed through a person’s skin or eyes. Eventually the mycotoxins then find their way into the person’s blood. This leads to heart damage, problems with blood clotting and internal or external hemorrhaging.
However, several of these cleaning agents are highly toxic to use indoors – so be careful. And, great care should also be taken to ensure that your work area is well ventilated and a respirator and gloves are worn while killing black mold in your home.
The trichothecene mycotoxins produced by toxic black mold are neurotoxic. This means they can kill neurons in the brain and impair a person’s mental ability. They also cause nervous disorders such as tremors and can cause personality changes such as mood swings and irritability.
The Environmental Protection Agency, which would typically be tasked with mitigating the health effects of mold in Houston, is currently uprooting the regulations intended to reduce carbon emissions that raise the likelihood of severe weather events. The agency stands only less equipped now to deal with environmental mold contamination than it did in New Orleans.
Molds are Part of the Natural Environment Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter, such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided.
In short, air cleaners can’t hurt, but they don’t perform miracles, and given their cost ($70-$1,600 for portable units; $30-$295 for replacement filters), you might be better off installing a whole-house HEPA furnace filter, ventilating your house and cleaning vigilantly with a HEPA-filter vacuum.
The EPA encourages homeowners to have their houses tested for radon. Quick tests ($8-$25) take three to seven days and are available at hardware stores and online; a 90-day continuous monitoring assessment (about $25 for a DIY kit; $150 for a professional inspection), which accounts for peaks and lows, will produce more thorough results. If your home has more than 4 pCo/L (picocuries per liter of air), hire a professional contractor to seal cracks and to install a venting system. You can also reduce your risk by increasing natural ventilation throughout the house and not smoking.
People often do not act quickly to remove toxic black mold. However, as soon as you find toxic black mold in your home you should take steps to have the mold removed. Ignoring the problem will only let it become worse.

What We Do

If the area to be cleaned is more than 10 square feet, consult the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guide titled Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings. Although focused on schools and commercial buildings, this document also applies to other building types. You can get it by going to the EPA web site at https://www.epa.gov/mold/mold-remediation-schools-and-commercial-buildings-guide.
The best way to prevent mold in the home is the control of moisture. Although it is impossible to eliminate all mold spores in an indoor environment, the mold spores will not grow in the absence of moisture, so controlling moisture is the key to preventing mold growth.

Mike was really responsive. He came out right away, gave me an estimate soon after, then came out and did the job the next day once I gave him approval. He did a great job too. I’ve already recommended him to other real estate agents that I work with and passed out his business cards to many people.
Few topics get us more upset than seeing all the misinformation publicized about Black Mold (and mold in general) by unscrupulous companies and the zealous media who are more interested in sensationalism than fact reporting.
I just had one of my cats urine tested for mycotoxins from real time labs and it came back as Gliotoxin and it’s a very nasty one. When I looked it up it said that these toxins can’t ever be pulled out of tissue and will remain imbedded because they have especially sharp hooks. They cause DNA/RNA damage as well. I want to cry. I probably have them too. Now I’m crying. This sucks.
Chlorine bleach is a strong toxic compound that emits very strong fumes. Therefore, always take caution when mixing the solution. In order to create this, you’ll need to mix a cup of bleach in one gallon of water. Make sure to wear rubber gloves during the mixing process to avoid contact with the skin. Add a little detergent to make the solution more effective and mix very well. Place some of it in a plastic spray bottle to apply.
Any mold professional should be able to explain Mold Remediation in plain English. If a contractor is unable to explain the basic processes and steps of mold remediation and mold removal in layman’s terms, be very wary! If someone tries to complicate and confuse you about the process and scare you into hiring them, walk away and say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” There are good honest mold removal and mold remediation companies (like Moldman!) out there as long as you are careful, educate yourself about mold remediation, and get multiple estimates.
Not only is wearing shoes indoors a health risk, but it can also increase allergens. Wet leaves bring in mildew and pollutants from grass get trapped on the bottom of shoes. Take your shoes off outside, or put them in a washable tray as soon as you walk in the door.
I have tried the vinegar and borax method on stubborn mixed molds (including black) under a kitchen sink that leaked at the trap. On simple mold problems it was an easy fix – just a few treatment and it was gone.
Ammonia: Mix a solution of 50% “clear” ammonia and 50% water. Do not mix with bleach, as this will create an extremely toxic, dangerous fume. After spraying the solution on effected area, leave it for 2-3 hours before rinsing.
You are exposed to biotoxic mold and your immune system does not respond appropriately to remove the foreign invader. Why you do not respond probably has a genetic cause. Get an HLA DR DQ test to determine if you are genetically susceptible to toxic mold.
Seal the area. To prevent mold spores from becoming airborne and spreading, you can seal the room. Put up sheets of plastic to cover doors and vents that lead to other areas of the house. Use painter’s or construction tape to tape the plastic in place and seal the room.[2]
Kathryn — I have read and been told by a mold testing expert that I should never SPRAY any kind of product onto moldy areas…. the mold will release spores into the air immediately in reaction. Instead, I was told to use products directly on a cloth, then scrub…. it’s the spraying that splashes the spores into the air! So when I read yr comment, I got a little scared for you– pls be careful!! DO some research to find out if spraying is as bad as I’ve been told… and good luck!!
The first step toward improved health and safety at home is getting a great mold test to find out just what is in the air you are breathing. This mold test from the Mold Inspection Network is a great option. Learn more about it below.
Your report of restoring books by storing them for several months in baking soda and/or activated charcoal is very interesting . I read elsewhere that charcoal filters in an air purifier can remove mold mycotoxins . If books can be restored in that way , then perhaps clothes and shoes with no visible mould could also be restored . Are you referring to stachy , black aspergillus mold mycotoxins , or less harmful ones ? Were your books exposed to stachy ? Where did you dreive your info from about this method ? I have a black mould problem in a 1 1/2 mete area of one wall , not in the bedroom , but as I am on a pension , with few assets , and neither my clothes nor my shoes smell of mold , and I realise I will need to ditch my mattress , bed , furnishings , cushions , washing machine , portable air conditioner , two air purifiers , and blender , juicer , stereo , computer , radio , etc., I am loathe to also ditch all my apparel and bags , bedding , blankets , etc . I am aware of the washing protocol of washing 3 times with borax, vinegar and epsom salts, each separately , and the storage solution would be an extra remedial measure . Any info would be appreciated , also any ways that the machines with motors could possibly be saved .
According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, the chimneys and connector pipes that serve oil and gas furnaces are subject to weathering, animal invasions, deterioration/rust-out and the accumulation of nest materials and debris. As a safeguard, have fuel-burning furnaces, stoves and fireplaces — as well as their connections and exhaust vents — inspected and serviced before each heating season. And never idle your car in the garage.
2. Soft furnishings are problematic. After I moved and felt significantly better – though I’ve still got a long way to go – I recognized that I still felt sedated/off/lethargic when I sat on a particular sofa and on the two chairs in my living room. That was tough, because they were really good pieces of leather furniture that I’d bought in the last couple of years as real “adult” furniture. I thought leather might be more impervious than fabric, but moisture & mold spores can still get in. So, I got rid of soft furnishings and bought new sofa & chairs.
Biomarkers consistent with the neuroimmune, vascular, and endocrine abnormalities that characterize CIRS. If you have a history consistent with biotoxin exposure, a susceptible genotype, and an abnormal VCS test, you are very likely to show the laboratory abnormalities seen in CIRS. Major and minor criteria are a work in progress.
Skin prick test. This test uses diluted amounts of common or suspected allergens, such as molds found in the local area. During the test, these substances are applied to the skin in your arm or back with tiny punctures. If you’re allergic, you develop a raised bump (hive) at the test location on your skin.
I lived in an apartment for 21/2 years and right before moving out we discovered the air ducts were filled with mold. I had workd out of the apartment most of that time. 8 years ago I was diagnosed with MS after a bout of optic neuritis. I did have a VCS test which was found to be consistent with MS. I went gluten free, low dairy, low sugar and on LDN and have been stable ever since. However, I cannot be outside when the molds are high (this summer was awful-I literally have trouble finding words when speaking). The other day I tried to eat peanut butter for the 1st time in years and itched horribly for 2 days (I suspect the molds in the peanut butter). I have always suspected my illness was caused by my mold exposure. Thank you for this article-we are thinking about moving in a few years and my biggest fear is that I will end up in a moldy home. I will look into Dr. Shoemakers protocol but living in Louisville, KY we are always behind the times when it comes to integrative medicine.
History, signs, and symptoms consistent with biotoxin exposure. In cases of mold toxicity, history should include exposure to toxin-producing molds as documented by the EPA-approved ERMI test (more on this in point #4 below). In other cases (microcystin, ciguatera, etc.), history should include likely exposure or laboratory evidence of exposure.
Can you be gluten intolerant without having celiac disease? Can gluten cause symptoms not related to digestion? A growing body of evidence proves that non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) is not only real, but possibly a larger problem than celiac disease.
Can it cause severe itching, burning and prickly feeling on the skin if you touched it while cleaning and vacuuming the rug where it was? Bc now I’m not sure if it’s mold or a parasite or both. How do you rule that out? Thank you.
Please, please DO NOT mix vinegar and bleach. Yes, it will make the bleach more effective (particularly if it is old bleach), but it releases chlorine gas and may harm you seriously. If you have a breathing apparatus handy, then fine, but otherwise please don’t risk it!
Made from 100-percent recycled tires, rubber mulch is suitable to use on most landscapes. It has several benefits: a safe play surface for children, prevents weeds, does not attract insects and water and air can easily flow through it.
Tea tree oil is one of several natural mold killers that you can employ instead of bleach. To put tea tree oil’s natural fungicide power to work, combine two teaspoons of tea tree oil with two cups water in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray the mixture anywhere that you see black mold. Then just let it sit and reapply as needed. Tea tree oil is said to be one of the best natural mold killers. (10) Pine oil can also be used in a similar fashion.
The second VCS test is available at VCSTest.com. The raw (unconverted) scores and the contrast sensitivity curve are provided for free, and a $10 donation is requested (but not required) for the upgraded results with detailed analysis and interpretation and a PDF that can be downloaded and shared. VCSTest.com now offers what they call an Online Contrast Sensitivity Test, which addresses one of the primary shortcomings of online VCS testing: the variability in how different computer monitors and displays handle visual contrast. The OCST features full display calibration, which adapts the test images to each user by taking into account both their display size and individual display characteristics/properties, like their video card, video drivers, operating system and display settings, including contrast, brightness, gamma, etc. As far as I know, this is the only FACT-based online VCS test that controls for display calibration.
Molds cause biodegradation of natural materials, which can be unwanted when it becomes food spoilage or damage to property. They also play important roles in biotechnology and food science in the production of various foods, beverages, antibiotics, pharmaceuticals and enzymes. Some diseases of animals and humans can be caused by certain molds: disease may result from allergic sensitivity to mold spores, from growth of pathogenic molds within the body, or from the effects of ingested or inhaled toxic compounds (mycotoxins) produced by molds.[1]
Thank you for these instructions. I will be using the vinegar for sure! We had some wood removed from our roof that had mold on it. The roof had been leaking for a while. I showed the mold guy our window gaskets which have mold on them, too. He said to never spray the mold since it will automatically open the spores and spread through the air. The safest way is to spray a cloth and then wipe the surface down.
Before the renovation, the fourteen hospital employees developed respiratory health problems related to mold. All previously had been healthy. Four of them developed occupational asthma. One of these employees also developed pneumonia. He had a series of respiratory issues, fevers, and infections which recurred whenever he was assigned to work in this building but improved whenever he was transferred elsewhere.
Discard any items that are porous or if you are unable to completely remove the mold from them. It’s also a very smart idea to get rid of any carpets that have been flooded because they’re very prone to mold. Never paint or caulk over moldy surfaces.
When mold spores drop on places where there is excessive moisture, such as where leakage may have occurred in roofs, pipes, walls, plant pots, or where there has been flooding, they will grow. Many building materials provide suitable nutrients that encourage mold to grow. Wet cellulose materials, including paper and paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, wood, and wood products, are particularly conducive for the growth of some molds. Other materials such as dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation materials, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery, commonly support mold growth.
As part of a building performance evaluation (or energy audit), a certified contractor uses a blower door to depressurize the home and locate air migration pathways that need to be sealed. The cost of an evaluation ranges from $250 to $500, a fee some municipalities subsidize through the Energy Star program.
If you already see mold, you usually do NOT need to spend money on pretesting as we discuss here: Mold Inspections and Mold Testing. Plain and simple: You need to remove it. All mold must be removed and done so in the same way (as described in the next bullet point), regardless of the type of molds identified from testing. If a so-called mold professional insists that you need to spend hundreds of dollars on pre testing when mold is already visible, our advice is to be very wary because its simply a waste of money except in the rarest of circumstances.
Wear an N-95 respirator to avoid breathing in mold or mold spores. N-95 respirators may be found in many hardware stores and from companies that advertise on the Internet. In order to be effective, the respirator or mask must fit properly, so carefully follow the instructions supplied with the respirator.

What We Do

One great blog suggested the following, which worked like a miracle! Here’s the clean picture, after the work was done. I wish I had a complete “nasty” picture of it all from before the cleaning, but I neglected to take one. The difference is remarkable.
To make this flooring, about one third of the cork-oak tree’s trunk is stripped — the tree is left undamaged and quickly regenerates new bark. Cork flooring is durable, yet it is much softer than standard hardwood flooring and it’s easy to install with a tongue-and-grove locking system. In this kitchen, two colors of cork are used to create a unique pattern.
It depends on how small it is. If it is only about a foot square or so, then probably not. Keep in mind, however, that if you see a little bit in an obvious place, there’s probably a lot more you don’t see.
Clorox clean-up – is made up of mostly bleach. Bleach does not kill the mold. This is a myth. What bleach does is to literally bleach the color of the mold, making it hard to see after the mold has been sprayed and it dries. Unfortunately the mold is still there. That’s why you may notice the mold comes right back in most cases in the same exact place. Again, bleach is not effect on mold.
To minimize the amount of dust kicked up during cleaning — especially if you are concerned about lead dust — wipe down floors with a damp mop, dust with a damp cloth and clean surfaces with a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter.

I visited your site and noticed you provide a lot of good tips for cleaning the bathroom, toilet, etc. HOwever, I stumbled upon a toilet bowl cleaner called NEVERSCRUB and thought it would be great for you to share with your readers! It removed all my hardwater and grime stains. I dont work for the company,. I am a housewife that swears by this product and figured you should share this too. I love your blogs!

If you’re suffering from mold toxicity, sugar is definitely not your friend. Fungi, which include molds and yeasts, require the presence of sugar for survival. Eliminate, or significantly cut down, your sugar intake to help to get rid of any black mold symptoms.
Mold spores occur in the indoor and outdoor environments. Mold spores may enter your house from the outside through open doorways, windows, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems with outdoor air intakes. Spores in the air outside also attach themselves to people and animals, making clothing, shoes, bags, and pets convenient vehicles for carrying mold indoors.
One way is for a doctor to conduct a simple physical examination to identify if you have mold allergies. By identifying the visible physical symptoms along with you describing all your symptoms, the doctor can identify if you have allergic reactions caused by a mold allergy.
The surface of this beautiful patio was finished in soy concrete stain. Made with eco-friendly, rapidly renewable materials, soy stain is acid-free and contains no hazardous materials. It’s also great for indoor use.
Air sampling does not allow identification of particular species of Penicillium, Aspergillus, Wallemia, etc., which is important because different species have different health effects. In addition, air sampling devices only collect a small sample of air from directly around the device. This matters because mold spores have different molecular weights, and some do not remain airborne for long.
Research suggests that healing your gut may be the single most important thing you can do to improve your health. In this eBook, you’ll learn how to optimize your gut health—and by extension, your overall health—with simple diet and lifestyle changes.
I dealt with an awful black mold experience in an old apartment. I had no clue what was making me so sick for so long. Doctors kept implying nothing was wrong with me. I even had a pulmonologist tell me what I really need was a psychiatrist.
I have a tingling sensation sometimes feels like prick or bite all over body. No rash or sores though. Its particularly bothersome at night. Muscle and joint pain too. 47 years old. I was in a dwelling that had mold several times to show remediators around and then it started about the second or third exposure. Seems too like my short memory has suffered some since, as well as more freq urination. IH tests showed spore levels to be 10 times higher than outside. I think i have toxicosis but have not neen tested….were you happy with your test experience? Did they respond to your question about detox and duration? my exposure totaled maybe 10 hours over the course of three weeks beginning about six weeks ago. I am experimenting with coconut shell charcoal and detox teas……hoping symptoms go away. Hopefully will be seeing a dermatologist soon too. How do you feel now…symptoms still? Thanks in advance.
The documented dangers of excessive mold exposure are many. Guidelines issued by the World Health Organization note that living or working amid mold is associated with respiratory symptoms, allergies, asthma, and immunological reactions. The document cites a wide array of “inflammatory and toxic responses after exposure to microorganisms isolated from damp buildings, including their spores, metabolites, and components,” as well as evidence that mold exposure can increase risks of rare conditions like hypersensitivity pneumonitis, allergic alveolitis, and chronic sinusitis.
CDC’s Mold Web site provides information on mold and health, an inventory of state indoor air quality programs, advice on assessment, cleanup efforts, and prevention of mold growth, and links to resources.
I have the same symptoms as you. The burning gets worse when follow the protocol for removing the toxins. I was diagnosed first with Fibromyalgia, then my thyroid went hypo. I got sick so quickly. In hind site…everything got bad when I was under stress. At times I couldn’t walk up and down the stairs. My lips would swell for no apparent reason. The allergist couldn’t find anything wrong.
Hydrogen Peroxide – Mix 1 part 20% hydrogen peroxide with 4 parts water to create a solution. This should only be used on organic fabrics (cotton, linen, etc.) that aren’t flame-resistant or don’t have easy-care finishes.
I really appreciate the section on air quality because true avoidance seems nearly impossible. That said, I’m a little concerned about the Advanced Hydrated Photocatalytic Oxidation Cell technology for sanitizing the air.

When a person is around toxic black mold the immune system may release a sedative called Chloral Hydrate. This is used as a defense to try to slow down the effects of toxic black mold. But this also makes a person tired and causes fatigue. Toxic black mold can also cause soreness of the muscles and joints.
I hope your get an answer as I’m still eager to know, too! I want to run mine much more while I’m at home and while I’m out, but am not sure if it’s safe for my pets. Now I only run it in one room at a time and have to lock the pets out.
To guard against the health risks associated with black mold, preventing and controlling mold growth in the home is the best defense. Treating areas of existing mold growth should always be done while wearing a respirator or mask rated for work with mold spores, and arms, legs and hands should be covered to prevent an allergic reaction.
Hi, I lived in orange county and Black toxic mold destroyed my entire life. Even till this day. I only live in the house with major black toxic mold(which all looked perfect because there was new carpet, new everything. But it has brought my life down. and nobody has any clue the amount of money it will take to combat this problem for the rest of my life. I need help. I’m facing the landlord soon in court. n I can not have kids due to this, I lost everything i own. I am also disabled. what do I do???
Decongestant nasal sprays. These include oxymetazoline (Afrin, others). Don’t use these medications for more than three or four days, as they can cause congestion to come back with even worse symptoms when you stop using them. Other possible side effects include headache, insomnia and nervousness.
Karie Fay earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology with a minor in law from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. Submerging a city means introducing a new ecosystem of fungal growth that will change the health of the population in ways we are only beginning to understand. The same infrastructure and geography that have kept this water from dissipating created a uniquely prolonged period for fungal overgrowth to take hold, which can mean health effects that will bear out over years and lifetimes.
I saw a pin on Pinterest some time back that also recommended using tea tree oil on mold/mildew, but it didn’t have as detailed instructions as you’ve provided. This is probably why I haven’t had any luck in my bathroom (lol!). You mentioned you like to use all 3 options. Do you mean on the same area? If so, how do you space each treatment apart?
You’re welcome Taneisha, glad to know I could help! The health of your two children definitely comes first, and unfortunately there’s too many harmful cleaning products on the market. Thanks for stopping by…take care!
In many cases, says the Resilient Floor Covering Institute, new flooring can be successfully installed over the existing. For material containing 1 percent asbestos that is friable — so damaged that it crumbles in your hand — it’s best to hire government-certified asbestos contractors to remove or encapsulate it.

What We Do

Step 5: Every hour or so, for the next day, thoroughly spray the paper towels to the point where you can see a little water running down. Wear your gloves while spraying as the 5% solution can stain your skin and cause pain as well.
Next, seal any doorways or other openings leading to other areas of the home, place heavy plastic over them, then seal the plastic in place with duct tape. If there are outdoor openings in the room, place an exhaust fan near them to help remove mold spores from the room.
Are you wondering how to test for mold? One option is to hire a professional mold tester to collect and analyze mold samples. A cheaper option is to order a black mold test kit, which you can use to collect mold samples yourself. You then send the samples to a professional mold testing laboratory.
I also live in the SF Bay Area and have been searching for a knowledgable specialist to come check out my new apartment (just recently had to move as ERMI score was too high). Can you please share who you found in this area?
Mold spores are literally everywhere; controlling moisture is the key to preventing their growth. Sources within homes, businesses, and schools include leaks through roofs, walls, and basements; condensation on windows and in bathrooms; standing water in drains, on floors, and in heating, cooling, and dehumidifying equipment; heating/cooling ducts; and wet floors and carpets. Preventing mold growth requires preventing leaks, removing standing water, venting areas prone to condensation (especially bathrooms and kitchens), and immediately drying or removing damp carpets and furniture. Mold-inhibiting paints can be used indoors, and air conditioners and dehumidifiers can be used in humid weather.27
Fix leaks and seepage. The ground should slope away from your house. If water is entering the house from the outside, your options range from simple landscaping to extensive excavation and waterproofing.
The American Lung Association recommends you use furniture and pressed-wood board made with laminated surfaces because they release less formaldehyde. Allow plywood and other formaldehyde-containing materials to air out before you use them indoors. If possible, use non-toxic alternatives to formaldehyde-containing products like glue and adhesives. Ventilation is key, so open windows and use exhaust fans to bring in a fresh supply of air. Also, wash permanent-press clothing before wearing. Formaldehyde is used in the production of special fabrics.
This would apply to small black mold killing projects only – larger jobs may require that negative pressure is put in place to keep mold spores from becoming aerosolized in your home (more on this later).
The advice I got from Dr. Ackerley is to buy the “swiffer cloth” HERTSMI test from http://www.mycometrics.com. She said not to trust anything else at this point. Use the cloth to wipe surfaces in all rooms – top of bookshelves, doors etc. Places that don’t get cleaned often. When the results come back you can decide if you want to pay extra to get full ERMI results. This is significantly cheaper than having an inspector come and gives you a good first indication of where you stand. I am waiting for our results at the moment.
Set an old box fan or a cheap new one in a window to ventilate the room while working. Throw it out when you’re done cleaning, because the spores are almost impossible to clean off. Tape plywood or cardboard around the window openings so the spores can’t blow back in.
Frankly, the mixture is cheep and pretty good on most situation but it takes PATIENCE and a lot of repeated work/treatments, *BUT* it is fairly useless on press board. My guess is that press board it just too porous, and after a month of spraying the area down every day with lots of scrubbing there has been about a 75%-80% improvement *EXCEPT FOR* the press board.

If your house tests above EPA standards, a remediation professional can retrofit an exhaust vent from a suction pit underneath the foundation slab to the outside of the house. Costs range from $800 to $2,500. For more information, contact the EPA’s radon hot line at 800-55RADON (557-2366).
This is another very important step in getting better. Basically, mold toxins can alter the fats in your cell membranes which then disrupts their function. Cell membranes are composed mostly of fat and are very important to the proper functioning of the entire body. This alteration in cell membranes may be what gives toxic mold sufferers that “I just don’t feel right” feeling.
Nasal corticosteroids. These nasal sprays help prevent and treat the inflammation caused by an upper respiratory mold allergy. For many people, they’re the most effective allergy medications, and they’re often the first medication prescribed.
Black mold is a special type of molds that is generally found in house and offices where moisture are big problem. Mold occurs only in moisture area. so it is essential to keep dry the surface as long as possible. For drying surface one should use fast drying fan or just call in professionals if he/she is unable to rectify them.
100-150). Is suing the company for all I’ve lost and the cost of the move feasible? I’ve been here in this place for 19yrs and now have to start with a new mortgage and the cost of moving is crippling to me!!! Any advice or comments would be appreciated.
Mycotoxins are carried on the spores of toxic black mold and are also found throughout the entire mold colony. People with toxic black mold in their homes are mostly exposed to mycotoxins through breathing them in. This leads to toxic symptoms and health problems.
Seal the room from the rest of the house. Cover the doorway with a barrier made of overlapping plastic sheeting and tape it to the wall and floor. Cover all air ducts in the room with plastic and tape.
AirOasis air sanitizers. These units work differently than HEPA filters. They use a technology developed by NASA called advanced hydration photocatalytic oxidation (AHPCO) to destroy mold, bacteria, and other microorganisms with ultraviolet light and a catalyst. We have a few of the Air Angel units in smaller rooms, as well as an AO3000 in the main living area. Important note: I currently recommend running the AO units only when you are not in the rooms, and turning them off when you enter. This is due to the small amounts of ozone that they release. Though these levels are well below the recommended limit according to AO’s website, I prefer to be cautious. I also recommend using a HEPA/charcoal filter along with the AO devices, rather than using them on their own.
First things First – All Black Molds are Not Toxic. There are many thousands of different species of this fungi worldwide and at least a thousand different species living and found in the United States, alone.
Intestinal fungal overgrowth almost always occurs after exposure to toxic mold. Over the years I have found this to be a very effective treatment in relieving many of the symptoms of my patients with this syndrome.
Turn on vents and fans. To help draw mold spores out of the room and out of the house, turn on any exhaust fans in the room you’re working in. You can also position a fan in front of an open window and aim it outside. This will similarly draw mold spores out of the room and push them outside.
Mold can cause serious respiratory problems and other health conditions and should be removed as soon as it is noticed. The method used to remove mold from drywall varies depending on whether or not the drywall is coated. If it is, then cleaning it with water and a cleansing agent should work. If it is not, then that section of drywall must be removed since it is too porous to clean.

Make sure first that the black spots on the wall are, in fact, black molds. In order to determine this, look for dark green circular patterns. These microorganisms have a tendency to replicate in a circular manner especially when they are still wet and slimy. When they dry off, they tend to lose the circular patterns, but will still retain the black color. As much as possible, avoid touching the molds and never allow them to become airborne. One way to do this is to spray them with bleach as soon as possible.
A mold (US) or mould (UK / NZ / AU / ZA / IN / CA / IE) is a fungus that grows in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae.[1][2] In contrast, fungi that can adopt a single-celled growth habit are called yeasts.
I was diagnosed with fybromyalgia about 15 years ago. I know on several occasions I was exposed to black mold. I’ve a lot so been reading some on the fact that some have been misdiagnosed with fybro, when it was black mold desease. I have asked my family Dr group 4 times to be tested, reading that the symptoms are extremely similar. They insist that as long as I am no longer exposed, there is no need to test. True?
Spending time in damp and moldy buildings seems to increase the risk of bronchitis and respiratory infections, but is not proven to do so. If it is a cause of these infections, bacteria or chemical emissions are likely to be responsible.10
Kill mold with borax. Borax is an inexpensive product you can buy in the laundry aisle at most supermarkets. It works on nonporous surfaces such as tile and glass and also on wood and other porous surfaces (as long as they won’t be damaged by excessive moisture). Start by vacuuming up any lose mold with a HEPA filtered vacuum so the spores don’t get spread throughout the room. Next, clean up the mold by following these steps:
When you’re done using any of these methods you may want to finish up with baking soda, a natural disinfectant. Spray the area with a mixture of 1/2 tsp baking soda and a cup of water. Scrub the area clean and rinse with water. If you use vinegar or hydrogen peroxide then finish with baking soda you’ll be sure to get all the mold with this double attack on it!
I once lived in a mold infested dwelling for 6 years. Was having different symptoms, headaches, skin rashes, overall fatigue. Moved after becoming convinced the mold problem in bldg was real and was impacting my health. Gradually over some years I began to have rashes and itching in upper body which became more severe and torturous, especially at night with sweating and overheating. Rashes and redness were and are present. My doc finally did blood tests and saw that my red cell count was proliferating, causing high hematocrit and found to have histamine reaction. Was directed to a hematologist at hospital who did many tests over months leading to a potential dx of Polycythemia, not Vera(PV) but secondary polycythemia. Docs have no answers but I must have phlebotomies every couple of months to get my blood hematocrit lowered. I need to know where this is coming from and am not finding any answers related to blood and mold specifically. PV is rare but 95 % of patients have a mutant gene, found after having a bone marrow biopsy. I don’t have this so I’m in 5% that is unknown, after eliminating some possible causes through testing. I need to know how this scenario could play into a mold problem that could
According to the EPA, studies have found that VOC levels are two to five times higher indoors than outdoors. During and for several hours immediately after certain activities, such as paint-stripping, levels may be 1,000 times background outdoor levels.
Hi Holly, for every 1 teaspoon of oil, add 1 cup water. If you have a bigger area to cover and need more, increase it to 2 teaspoon oil to 2 cups water, etc. That’s what I meant about keeping the ratio the same. It’s easier to remember. Sorry about the confusion 🙂

What We Do

Proper safety gear should be worn when dealing with mold. A high quality, high filtration face mask is a must, as are vinyl or neoprene gloves. A full protective suit is recommended when using harsh chemicals and for larger mold remediation projects.
I bought a Hoover washer in March this year…I have recently noticed a smell on clothes after washing, and then saw black marks all along the bottom of the three door seals…have tried Dr. Beckmann Service It, but the marks are still there. I am an OAP & so have done a lot of washing, but I have never had this problem before. I am really fed up with the whole thing.
Blueair Sense filters. Blueair filters use “HEPASilent Technology,” which combines electrostatic and mechanical filtration to capture 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns in size. We use these in bedrooms and my home office because they are smaller, quieter, and more energy efficient than the IQAir HealthProPlus units.

black mould disease | home mold test

The second step is testing your home or workplace. The best way to determine if your symptoms are that of toxic mold exposure is to find out if you are breathing in toxic mold spores in the first place.
So can you comment on what we should be looking for in terms of engaging a mold inspector? I have been told by my functional med doctor that chronic inflammation is contributing to my symptoms (elevated C4, MMP-9 and TGF Beta) and the tests showed that I have HLA Mold and multi-susceptibility type BUT so far I have not been able to find any significant areas of mold my home other than the usual – little bit on the bath grout, bit of black slime around the kitchen sink. Plus, my symptoms have been ongoing for four or five years now and we have only been in this house for three. Today I spoke to an independent mold inspector that said he would visually inspect our home (for several hundred dollars) and if there was mold or had been mold he would find it because it usually leaves some kind of indication. His website mentions the use of infrared thermography if necessary. Any advice on what else to ask/look for with mold inspections? Thanks
You need to completely fix any water leaks, enable better ventilation where humidity is high and/or address any HVAC system problems. You can also purchase a dehumidifier for any areas that tend to be too humid. Exhaust fans are in kitchens and bathrooms for good reason. Make sure you use them to get moisture out of these prime mold areas.

Of course it’s best to hire a professional mold inspector to perform the toxic black mold inspection for you. Mold inspectors use both their experience and sophisticated equipment to find any and all hidden mold, with minimal disturbance to your home. This way you can be sure that if there is mold in your home it will be found.

It is not always a good idea to use a fast drying fan to attempt drying out a mold contaminated area (such as carpet, drywall and so on). It is best to remove all contaminated items first (to include cutting out affected drywall) and then dispose of properly.
I dealt with an awful black mold experience in an old apartment. I had no clue what was making me so sick for so long. Doctors kept implying nothing was wrong with me. I even had a pulmonologist tell me what I really need was a psychiatrist.
Regular household cleaning and maintenance go a long way toward limiting exposure. Change filters and have heating and cooling equipment cleaned and checked regularly by a professional; these systems can become not only breeding grounds for mold and other biological contaminants but also superhighways for dispersing them throughout the home.

Mold spores will grow unabated in dark areas of a basement. If you have carpet in the basement and it gets wet for any reason (and not allowed to dry properly), you will have a mold farm in short order.
You should also take commonsense precautions when it comes to electricity. All electrical outlets and switches should be covered by faceplates. Use the right light bulbs in all lamps and lights. Check the wattage requirements by looking inside the fixture.
Know when to call a professional. Mold can be notoriously difficult to clean, especially in hard to reach places and on certain materials, such as dry wall and other porous materials. There are times when it’s best to call a mold removal professional, including if:[13]
This time I used vinegar and a few drops of Tea tree Oil in a spray bottle, left it for 2 hours and VOILA it wiped off so easily I was actually amazed! Its been two months since and not a spot of mildew has returned. It truly works.
Keep a spray bottle full of white distilled vinegar in your bathroom and kitchen for quick cleaning. Personally I don’t mind the smell of vinegar but if you find it too strong and unpleasant, just add a few drops of essential oil (like lavender) and you will be able to tell the difference.
This species of mold is more commonly found in soil and plant debris. However, when found in your home, school or business; it is likely that there is or has been a water or moisture problem in the area.
Remember! Ammonia is a skin and eye irritant and its fumes are quite toxic. This mold killing agent is poisonous and could prove lethal when ingested or its fumes are inhaled. Especially, in non-ventilated areas without the use of a respirator.
That article points out the problem with relying exclusively on prescription drugs for treatment, as the conventional medical system tends to do. I am not against all prescription drugs, and I have written about the benefits of rifaximin (for SIBO), low-dose naltrexone (for autoimmune disease), thyroid hormone replacement, and many others.
[2] It is true that indoor molds can be destructive to the physical structures on which they grow. This has been a source of litigation when insurance companies have denied coverage for removing mold and repairing damaged structures.
I’ve always wanted to say thanks to internet and many thanks to all those who for heartful reasons take their time and share their knowledge to help others with everyday complications – Mellisa, you’re one of those who would save the dayCn
Consult your doctor or an allergist to find out what medicine you can take for allergies and be sure to carefully follow the directions of any medications you use. It should also be remembered that these types of medications only lessen the symptoms of allergic reactions, they do not cure you of the allergy or make you any less allergic to mold in the future.
People who feel they are ill should seek medical care to establish a diagnosis and course of treatment, rather than relying on self-appointed “experts” who advertise unfounded “cures” on the internet.
Every two years, education-policy wonks gear up for what has become a time-honored ritual: the release of the Nation’s Report Card. Officially known as the National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, the data reflect the results of reading and math tests administered to a sample of students across the country. Experts generally consider the tests rigorous and highly reliable—and the scores basically stagnant.
Schmidt is the director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (a.k.a. GISS) a world-class climate-science facility. One day last year, I came to GISS with a far-out proposal. In my work as an astrophysicist, I’d begun researching global warming from an “astrobiological perspective.” That meant asking whether any industrial civilization that rises on any planet will, through their own activity, trigger their own version of a climate shift. I was visiting GISS that day hoping to gain some climate science insights and, perhaps, collaborators. That’s how I ended up in Gavin’s office.
If your mold spot has appeared by a door or window, while the inner wall is open have someone spray water on the door or window with a hose and monitor for any moisture coming in. Sometimes it can take 5 minutes of spraying with water before any leak will show itself. Once located, seal from both the outside and inside to prevent moisture coming in (again mold is only caused where there is moisture).
Mold is everywhere. It’s a type of fungus that grows from tiny spores that float in the air. It can grow almost anywhere that spores land and find moisture and a comfortable temperature, between 40 and 100 degrees F. Typically that includes about every damp place in your home.
The genetics are clear: occurrence of specific HLA types are found in about 25% of the population. It is in these people that we find the sickened ones almost always (nothing is 100% in biology). In these people, the antigens stay in the body, and our own defenses bombard our body in response to those antigens. What you now have is a person who is defenseless against new exposures and is suffering daily from inflammation.
If mold remains even after scrubbing in step 4, it’s time to take reach for the sandpaper. When considering how to remove mold from wood, an abrasive might not seem like the obvious solution. It may seem counterintuitive, but sanding is the only way to reach the mold deep within the wood. Work the sandpaper slowly around the affected area until you see no more signs of mold. After sanding, it’s a good idea to refinish the wood, not only for appearances’ sake, but also to prevent a future outbreak. Finally, get rid of all the rags and such that came into contact with the mold, and start trying to figure out how to limit the amount of moisture present in the area where you’ve been working.
Generally, it is not necessary to identify the species of mold growing in a residence, and CDC does not recommend routine sampling for molds. Current evidence indicates that allergies are the type of diseases most often associated with molds. Since the reaction of individuals can vary greatly either because of the person’s susceptibility or type and amount of mold present, sampling and culturing are not reliable in determining your health risk. If you are susceptible to mold and mold is seen or smelled, there is a potential health risk; therefore, no matter what type of mold is present, you should arrange for its removal. Furthermore, reliable sampling for mold can be expensive, and standards for judging what is and what is not an acceptable or tolerable quantity of mold have not been established.
@barleysinger. if you are going to talk about birth defects at least spiel it correctly. people afflicted by spina bifida don’t take too kindly to hocus pocus people saying unproven things of how one can have a baby born with it. It isn’t the water because less children now are born with it than before they added things to the water and most cases were in rural areas. It is one thing to try to help people and you know what you are talking about. It is another to hijack.someone else’s blog with your own inaccurate facts about a totally different subject.
P.S. If there’s a few black spots, you’ll be able to clean it, but if it’s spread and the seal is turning black, you can either replace the seal (can get quite expensive) or get a new washing machine.
Keep the room well ventilated. To remove mold, you may need to work with chemical cleaners. Many of these cleaners can be harmful if inhaled and, as a result, you should keep the doors and windows open as you work. Never direct a fan of any kind into the room or you will absolutely spread the spores everywhere! A fan may be placed in windows facing outward to push bad air outdoors. You should seal off doors with plastic to avoid spreading the mold spores in other areas of the house.
The ERMI test was developed by the EPA as a means of determining the relative “moldiness” of a home compared to a group of reference homes that do not have mold. Thirty-six species were divided into 26 species/clusters of molds associated with water-damaged buildings (Group 1) and 10 common species not associated with water-damaged buildings (Group 2). The mold index is the sum of logs of Group 1 minus the sum of the logs of Group 2 in a building. The ERMI has been validated in several peer-reviewed studies (5, 6, 7, 8).
Every day you spend in an environment with toxic black mold could be potentially causing you long term chronic health problems and permanent damage. People often underestimate the damage toxic black mold can do to their health until it has already happened. Toxic black mold can cause problems such as mental impairment, breathing difficulty, damage to internal organs and sometimes even death.
You can also use lemon juice and baking soda made into a paste then brush onto clothes . It works great on towels that have molded, rub it on then wash in warm to hot water. Hang out in direct sunlight!! It helps to kill the mold.
Reality: Mold is evidence that a moisture issue — a leak or condensation — along with the organic material found in construction materials, is allowing microscopic mold spores to go forth and multiply like crazy. However, in most cases, the EPA does not recommend the use of biocides like bleach: “It is not possible or desirable to sterilize an area; a background level of mold spores will remain – these spores will not grow if the moisture problem has been resolved.”
The presentation in toxic mold illness thus may be expected to be a bit more complex than what may be present when a single particularly virulent pathogen is wholly responsible for causing a particular disease.
I have a doctor out of Michigan who I’ve been working with for several years… I’ve been diagnosed with Fybro for many years but recently took a big decline. She immediately tested me for Lyme (the gold standard test level) and Mold. Sure enough I tested positive for two types of mold and are now in the process of taking two over the counter items (for 6 months) to rid my system.

Killing Black Mold with Ammonia has its advantages. It’s a good disinfectant and does a pretty good job of killing mold on hard, non-porous items. These items would include the bathroom sink, shower doors or kitchen counters.
Fungi comprise a vast world of organisms, perhaps as many as 300,000 species. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency defines funguses, or fungi, as “types of plants that have no leaves, flowers or roots.”3 Fungi include such seemingly unrelated substances as poisonous and non-poisonous mushrooms; organisms that can cause athlete’s foot, fingernail infections, and some types of pneumonia; molds found in cheese, peanut butter, mulch, hay, grains, and spoiled foods; and the black material growing in bathroom grout.
In the early 2000s Toshiyuki Nakagaki, then at Hokkaido University in Japan, and his colleagues chopped up a single polycephalum and scattered the pieces throughout a plastic maze. The smidgens of slime mold began to grow and find one another, burgeoning to fill the entire labyrinth. Nakagaki and his teammates placed blocks of agar packed with nutrients at the start and end of the maze. Four hours later the slime mold had retracted its branches from dead-end corridors, growing exclusively along the shortest path possible between the two pieces of food.

What We Do

Mold professionals usually discard moldy porous building materials such as drywall, insulation and baseboards. These materials are relatively inexpensive to replace and difficult to impossible to restore to their previous uncontaminated condition.
The extent of black mold symptoms depends upon the number of spores inhaled and the duration of exposure. Black mold easily causes mold allergy symptoms, and symptoms likely persist until you get rid of the the black mold. Sometimes people don’t realize the health problems they’re having are actually black mold symptoms. Black mold is not something to ignore because it only gets worse the longer you ignore it.

Wipe the rubber and remove the detergent drawer every after wash. Replace it after it dries. You can also leave the door open for hours or even overnight every time you wash to prevent the mould and bad smell. If the rubber is already blackened by mould, it will stay clean by doing this.
I to get mold i use a dehumidifer i put plastic onmy windows for the winter but still get mold on them under the plastic i have to put plastic on windows to keep out the cold but will try all these again and see if it works
Often CIRS is part of the picture but not the whole picture, in our experience. Unfortunately mold is not always visible, so the fact that you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Starting with an ERMI test from Mycometrics is typically what we recommend. It can’t rule in/out mold with 100% certainty, but it’s a good initial screen.

What We Do

Another misleading term is “toxic.” As the Centers for Disease Control explains, the mold itself isn’t actually poisonous. Some molds are, instead, “toxigenic, meaning they can produce toxins (specifically mycotoxins).” These chemical compounds sometimes attach to mold spores – reproductive seeds – and drift away in search of a new home. When they are inhaled, they may cause serious health issues. Fortunately, mold generally only releases spores when it is disturbed, such as by the breeze of a closing door or the vibration of a pounding hammer. In addition, the mold doesn’t release mycotoxins constantly, so even if spores are released, toxins may not. However, any mold is never healthy in a home – much less Stachybotrys – especially for individuals with lung problems, compromised immune systems or simply allergies to mold.
We are building a strawbale house in Australia and have had moist air over the winter cause mould to form on some of the loose strands of straw [rice straw]. We have not covered with the clay plaster as yet. I was considering the borax and water solution, cutting back the bale a bit first. Some of the stalks have light grey discoloration about an inch or so up inside the stalk. It is not over all the bale just here and there.
Suzy dated March 7th……this is very interesting. I have mold illness and was finally diagnosed last yr Feb 2016 and i am HLA-DR positive, CIRS, Hashimoto’s disease, hypothyroid, anemic, leaky gut, systemic yeast and still living in this house with many molds including THE black mold stachybotris chartrum. My sister lives in MD and is a nurse as well as myself. She was diagnosed with PV about 3yrs ago and they were just watching it and then about a yr ago her platelets were 3x’s the high level and they were talking about starting blood letting and oral chemo. Then they re tested her and said she does NOT have PV…..but they dont know whats going on. He herself had started taking a baby aspirin to thin here blood understanding the risk for blood clots and heart attacks but she still has no answers and is just living with it. She has not been to my house since i had the mold in july 2012 when a pipe burst and a minor leak happened and the co that was sent out by insurance did not take down the small area of wall or the little bit of wall to wall carpet in the finished basement and i started with all these symptoms. She said she has not had mold in here house except in her bathroom a little and WE know that is all it might take to make a susceptible person sick but she dosent want to have the HLA-DR test and i dont think she believes me about how sick i am or how serious this whole subject is. Please post any info you might come across bc id like to pass it on to her. If i here anything i will do the same. I am going to try to print this out and send it to her bc there might be a link. Thanks! Donna Z.
I wish you good luck with this. I pray a lot and I truly believe God brought me to this specialist. The sad part is that many general practitioners and internists don’t know anything about this and don’t care. They just want to put you on pain killers, anti-inflammatory drugs and anti-depressants.
I have a Bosch front loader. I researched before I bought it and saw reviews in front loads about molding on the gasket. I went to our friend’s appliance store and asked about that and feel I was lied to to my face. How do we get rid of this? I feel like doing a service call to have them billed. Guessing we just need to change the seals if this doesn’t work.
Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all. Some people are sensitive to molds. For these people, molds can cause nasal stuffiness, throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. People with mold allergies may have more severe reactions. Immune-compromised people and people with chronic lung illnesses, such as obstructive lung disease, may get serious infections in their lungs when they are exposed to mold. These people should stay away from areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas.
Publications in 2007, 2010, and 2011 did not substantially change those findings.8,9,10,11 They reiterate that there is evidence to support an association between damp spaces, indoor mold, and respiratory illnesses. Therefore, whether the precise cause is mold or an accompanying indoor contaminant, spending time in places damp enough to support the growth of mold is a potential cause of ill health. Whether or not mold is actually seen, finding and fixing the sources of excess moisture are important for health and to keep the structure from being further damaged. Researchers note that, if dampness and mold could be confirmed as a cause of ill health, controlling these conditions would make a substantial contribution to public health.
In any case, a medical diagnosis is needed. For example, does the person have an allergy, asthma, or an infection? There are established methods for diagnosing these and many other conditions. Diagnosis is related to the disease process, not a specific trigger. For example, it is possible to test people for allergies to molds, but positive results do not necessarily correlate with symptoms. A sizeable percentage of the U.S. population will test positive for mold allergens but have no symptoms; estimates range from 3 percent to more than 90 percent.9 And, generally speaking, treatments will not differ if the cause is mold exposure versus other triggering conditions.
How do we find a certified specialist to come inspect for mold once we have done the HERMI test? I’ve spend hundreds of dollars on inspectors, but they don’t understand CIRS patients. I live in a small county in Missouri so I don’t have allot of options locally. Kansas City is the nearest big city to me. I hope you can help! Thanks
Raw garlic has amazing antifungal abilities, which is just what your body needs when it has been exposed to black mold. Garlic helps to kill off fungi, molds and yeasts. Two to four grams of fresh garlic per day, or 600 milligrams to 900 milligrams of garlic tablets daily, is recommended for toxic mold exposure. (7)
As part of routine building maintenance, buildings should be inspected for evidence of water damage and visible mold. The conditions causing mold (such as water leaks, condensation, infiltration, or flooding) should be corrected to prevent mold from growing.
Donna, you can add a link to a comment here (so there’s no need to ever ask anyone to “Google” something that you know where it is). The only Google result for your quoted phrase was this article, because it appears in your comment. Here’s the article:
To make stairs, another area where people are prone to fall, safer, experts also suggest stair rails on both sides. A strip of chair molding on one side won’t cut it. Stair rails should be 34 inches high and guardrails 36 inches high.
I wanted to find out how to get rid of mold naturally and I didn’t want to use anything toxic that I may breathe or get on my skin, so I started looking up some natural options for removing mold. I found three main options that sounded good. One was using essential oils such as tea tree oil and the other ones were using vinegar or hydrogen peroxide. I like using all of these options because not only are they very effective in killing mold but they are natural ingredients I am comfortable with. Of course there is the option of using bleach and many people say they had good results with it , but that’s not natural. It’s something that I would never want to use unless it was an absolute last resort!
A challenge for conventional medical practitioners in diagnosing toxic mold illness has been that symptoms as well as laboratory tests tend to present somewhat differently across sufferers (and may change over time for particular individuals).
The truth is that all molds; whether black, green, pink, orange or red can potentially cause cold or hay fever symptoms in healthy people and can aggravate symptoms in those with compromised immune systems, or people with breathing issues.
I felt like I was going crazy. People are patronizing me. I’ve been living in this house for 2 years now. My roommate actually has Lyme disease so she’s probably affected as well. She was ill too but “got better” I have Sarcoidosis. We did the Petri dish thing last year where you test for mold in different parts of the home and they all came back positive but we already knew there was water damage. There are leaks everywhere. Water stains in the ceilings etc. There was no follow up or repair after the testing. I don’t own the home so I couldn’t do anything about it. I’m on SSI so it’s difficult to find a place an affordable place to move to. What prompted the testing was me smelling this horrible mildew smell and becoming increasingly sensitive to every smell and my body reacting to the presence of it. I was finally able to attribute my hyperosma to the methotrexate and phentermine I was taking but, those meds only enabled me to smell the mildew that is present not imagine that it was there! I can feel tingling sensations on my skin, my eyes, my tongue even. Now certain things I touch burn my skin. It’s like I can feel these invisible allergens present on surfaces and clothing, burning my skin, causing itching inside my ears, shortness of breath. People keep saying I’m crazy because they can’t see, smell or feel them. I CAN and I’m not crazy! I think I have CIRS. I have increasing joint pain with no inflammation. My eyes are growing ridiculously sensitive to light and they feel dry and burn all the time. I get dehydrated. My potassium is all over the place. My brain feels weird. I can’t sleep or focus. I can’t eat or I’m TOO hungry that it just hurts so bad! My stomach just one way or another hurts. It produces way too much acid or mucus or both. I’m just bleh. I’m so tired. I’m afraid they’re going to be right and I am going crazy. I need someone to help me!
Identify and remove the source of the moisture problem. Mold can occur in obvious situations such as flooding or a water leak, but it can also grow in areas with high levels of humidity. Slow leaks, leaks behind walls and humidity build-up can all contribute to black mold. Mold only needs 24 hours to germinate and grow.
I stay on the 3rd floor of these apts my girlfriend and I jus moved to and notice black mold in the ceiling wash room near the back side of the shower wall. It’s a nice size and Ive been really going thru all the symptoms. We have told maintenance on 3 different occasions but still they haven’t fixed it and we been here goin on 3 months. Someone please shed sum advice..
Virtually everyone we’ve tested in our practice has a susceptible HLA haplotype, which would mean most patients that test positive for heavy metal toxicity have susceptible haplotypes. But that association could be purely due to chance; more formal research would have to be done to establish a true correlation.
White Distilled Vinegar – An excellent mould-killer, diluted vinegar can be worked directly into the stain – or you can pre-soak the clothing in a bucket of water mixed with one cup of vinegar. You can also add 1-2 cups of vinegar to your washing machine per cycle to kill any mildew odours and brighten your whites.

Thanks for the article, I will definitley try out some of these things to get rid of the mold in my house. For several months I just had a slight cough, I didn’t think much of it at first, but when it didn’t stop I went to the doctor. After a while of taking medicine with no results, I decided to look for other causations, turns out there is mold behind my walls.
The most common black mold symptoms and health effects are associated with a respiratory response. Chronic coughing and sneezing, irritation to the eyes, mucus membranes of the nose and throat, rashes, chronic fatigue and persistent headaches can all be symptomatic of black mold exposure or black mold poisoning.
Hi Karen……google “paradigm change me, what do I do with my stuff”. This is a very good artical that explains what you should throw out and WHY in detail. I have found it to be very helpful. This isn’t an easy thing to do…dealing with all the loose we all have to deal with but if we want to get better we have to make hard decisions.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of patients with this condition have not been properly diagnosed or treated because conventional doctors—and even many functional and integrative medicine specialists—simply aren’t looking for it. The fact that CIRS patients also typically meet the criteria for other syndromes and diseases like fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, post-treatment Lyme syndrome (PTLS), and multiple sclerosis (MS) compounds the problem.

The borax solution may slow down the expansion of the mold growth or inhibit it. However, it is a “wet” solution. And, in a environment that is already rich with humidity, the borax solution may not be the best choice.
I used a trial area of borax and baking soda. The borax treated area had even better results. I did this a few years ago and the borax treated area is still almost mould free, whilst the area I treated with baking soda has some mould on it again. However both are better than vinegar only or clove oil, and much better than using bleach. I tested it all out, as there is so much conflicting information out there. Must add, that I live in a humid tropical climate in the rain forest.
However, several of these cleaning agents are highly toxic to use indoors – so be careful. And, great care should also be taken to ensure that your work area is well ventilated and a respirator and gloves are worn while killing black mold in your home.
Once you’ve discovered mould on clothes, the treatment depends on how old the mould stains are as well as the type of fabric. Fresh mould stains can often be removed simply by laundering with a good quality detergent like Persil Powercaps, so you may even be able to skip Steps 2 and 3 below.
Recognizing the sources of mold growth and the costs of letting them go is the first step to mastering this situation. The next step is understanding exactly what your home insurance policy does and does not cover when it comes to mold and water damage—two different things. Once you understand your the risks that mold poses specifically to your family and property, you can learn to control it.
Unlike an air purifier which circulates a portion of a room’s indoor air and pushes it through a filter, Air Oasis’s Surface and Air Sanitizers produce safe catalytic molecules that are blown throughout the room to sanitize both the air and surfaces 24/7/365.
For seven years now, America has been struggling to understand its moral responsibility in Syria. For every urgent argument to intervene against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to stop the mass killing of civilians, there were ready responses about the risks of causing more destruction than could be averted, or even escalating to a major war with other powers in Syria. In the end, American intervention there has been tailored mostly to a narrow perception of American interests in stopping the threat of terror. But the fundamental questions are still unresolved: What exactly was the moral course of action in Syria? And more urgently, what—if any—is the moral course of action now?

What We Do

Are common additives to food and supplements like soy lecithin, carrageenan, xanthum gum, and magnesium stearate harmful–or harmless? Read this eBook to find out which ingredients you should be concerned about, and which are safe.
Some first priorities could include; stop the moisture by repairing any leaks where needed. Clean, disinfect and cut out (when necessary – like carpet and carpet padding for example) contaminated mold. And, always wear and use “Personal Protective Equipment” (like a full face respirator and/or goggles, neoprene gloves and disposable paper coveralls) when working around any chemical and mold spores.
Hydrogen peroxide is another odorless option that can be used to kill black mold. Pour a 3 percent concentration hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle and spray the moldy areas until they are saturated. Let the hydrogen peroxide sit for at least 10 minutes before scrubbing the area well. Wipe the area with hydrogen peroxide when you’re done scrubbing.
Toxic black mold can be expensive to remove and even cause a range of health problems — so testing for black mold is an important first step if you think your home might have a black mold infestation.
Molds are Part of the Natural Environment Outdoors, molds play a part in nature by breaking down dead organic matter, such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but indoors, mold growth should be avoided.
I would stay away from any abrasive paste or chemical compounds that might damage, disfigure or discolor the natural markings of this beautiful resource. For your mold cleaning purposes, the natural silica content of the stone hinders and resists acid attacks – so this will help.
I picked up the tip when initially researching how to clean toxins from vegetables naturally; and, learned along the way the many other benefits that Grapefruit Seed Extract offers. BTW, it can also be used to help keep your hot tub and Jacuzzi disinfected!
While vinegar will lower the pH in the bleach and in turn make the bleach a better disinfectant.., The trade-off for safety purposes is not worth it. And, the vinegar-bleach combo could be lethal as Toxic Chlorine Gases will be discharged into the surrounding airspace.
I hope your get an answer as I’m still eager to know, too! I want to run mine much more while I’m at home and while I’m out, but am not sure if it’s safe for my pets. Now I only run it in one room at a time and have to lock the pets out.
Rinse and dry the area. To remove any leftover mold and cleaner, rinse the area with clean water. When the mold and cleaner are gone, wipe the area dry with a towel or a squeegee. This will remove excess moisture and prevent the mold from growing back.[12]
Hey Wes, thanks for the very informative article. I am in the mold industry and have never heard of the Grape Seed Extract for removal. Is that something you came up with or where did you hear about it? Just curious
Wear respiratory (nose and mouth) protection when handling or cleaning moldy materials. The minimal type of breathing mask, or respirator, that should be used for protection from mold particles is an N-95 particulate respirator approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
When vacuuming and using air scrubbers for mold remediation, the filters used should be HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air). Only HEPA filters are designed to capture particles as small as mold spores. Regular filters will not work.
Killing it is easy. Keeping it out is a huge job. This Old House devoted a program to it on about 1/17/17. It involved mold kill, regrading of landscaping to keep water away from the house, spray-foam insulation of the entire floor area underside, plastic sheeting welded into one piece over the soil, and ducting air from the furnace at 35 cfm into the crawlspace to reduce infiltration of moist, cold air. Expensive, but the estimated life of the job was 25 years.
It was rented to us by a mngmnt co. that could have cared less; after all they weren’t the ones subject to living with it. Any atempt to bring attention to the huge nightmare, were quickly discredited, by them. We stayed there only because of financial reasons. But, I know now that the price we had paid then with our health and perhaps in the future health, by continuing to stay, may be far greater.
Black mold is easily distinguishable from other molds because, not surprisingly, it tends to be dark black. Black mold, also known as Stachybotrys chartarum or Stachybotrys atra, can be found indoors growing on a variety of surfaces, especially things with a high cellulose content like wood, fiberboard, gypsum board, paper, lint and dust. (2)
I would of never known you could use baking soda after, I really need to try that, we have a icky mold spot in the basement, that i keep spraying with vinegar and tea tree, but it just isn’t going away all the way.

A great thing to consider when purchasing the insurance that comes along with buying a home is some type of protection from mold. Discuss your options with an agent. That way, if a problem should arise within your home, then your insurance will help to at least partially offset the cost of mold removal.

A solution of detergent and warm water can be used to scrub surface mold off non-porous surfaces. Although detergent itself doesn’t kill mold, if the mold is on non-porous materials then the solution doesn’t need to kill it as long as you completely clean away all the mold on the surface.
1) Are you seeing a connection of the CIRS lab values and HLA mutations to other issues such as heavy metal toxicity? 2) If CIRS labs are out of range with HLA gene mutation and had a long-term past WDB exposure, can you recover without protocol over time? Will the labs remain out of range without treatment?
I called Labcorp and was told that “HLA DR 1345 DQ Intermediate” in the lavender tube is $600. Is that the right test? I haven’t been able to figure that out on survivingmold.com, and haven’t found anything about the circumstances under which my doctor can code the test so it will be covered by insurance.

In order for you to receive shots the mold allergen that is affecting you needs to be identified. Also, you might need to take shots regularly for months or even years for them to remain effective. Like other medications, shots don’t cure allergies, they just increase your tolerance to allergens and therefore lessen the symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Cutting-edge, while more expensive mold remediation methods may include, using ice pellets or sand and walnut shells to blast mold away from your basement walls and removing mold in your attic from the wood sheathing and overhead beams.
Mold professionals use “negative air” containment, which is created by positioning blower fans and using air pressure machines to bring clean air into the contaminated space and push contaminated air outside the home.
If you have a mold problem in your home you are probably suffering several of the symptoms of mold. In fact many people suffer symptoms from mold and don’t even realize it, instead assuming their symptoms are from hay fever or a cold.
Even if there is no longer mold in your home a build up of mold spores can still cause allergic symptoms and can also lead to new mold growth. Vacuum and clean regularly to minimize allergy-causing spores.
Various artists have used mold in various artistic fashions. Daniele Del Nero, for example, constructs scale models of houses and office buildings and then induces mold to grow on them, giving them an unsettling, reclaimed-by-nature look. Staci Levy sandblasts enlarged images of mold onto glass, then allows mold to grow in the crevasses she has made, creating a macro-micro portrait.[24] Sam Taylor-Johnson has made a number of time-lapse films capturing the gradual decay of classically arranged still lifes.[25]

Changing the filter is an essential part of keeping dust out of the air and preserving the life of the machine. Change the filter once it’s showing wear and tear or every six months if you’re using a HEPA filter.
Too many preventable accidents have happened when combining 2 or more cleaning agents together. Often enough, this occurred because the user (although well intentioned) did so to create a stronger cleaning agent for the job at hand.
Getting rid of black mold with tea tree oil is an extremely effective method. Tea tree is an essential oil that is safe for people and pets. It is more expensive than vinegar but a few teaspoons go a long way. I’ve used it successfully on a small area of the rug and a moldy shower curtain.

You can scrub away the surface mold common to bathrooms, decks and siding in a matter of minutes with a 1-to-8 bleach/water mold cleaner solution as one way on how to remove mold. But often mold grows and spreads in places you don’t notice, until you spot surface staining, feel mushy drywall or detect that musty smell.
Black mold can be an expensive and potentially unhealthy problem for homeowners, but by testing for black mold, you can know for sure if you’ll need to take steps to eradicate black mold from your home.
Is there any landscaping challenges on the outside wall? For instance, a low depression with a bad gutter system or heavy mulch and organic material (add a little bit of precipitation) will quickly pile up the water table in small areas where the rain cannot evaporate and drain-off. And, if stucco is present, then the excessive moisture will settle in behind it with the inner wall providing a source for continuous mold growth.
The perfect choice for this retro-style kitchen, natural linoleum has been popular for over 100 years. It is made from all raw materials, including linseed oil, resins and wood flour. Natural linoleum is often used in hospitals because its bactericidal properties stop microorganisms from multiplying and it is easy to clean.
Skin problems like acne, eczema, and rosacea are epidemic, yet conventional treatments rarely work. Find out what really causes skin problems, and how simple dietary changes can restore the clear, beautiful skin you desire.
If the wood you’re dealing with is either painted or stained, that means the mold has not penetrated. You can therefore stick to a mild cleaning solution—a simple mixture of dishwashing detergent and warm water. Dip a soft-bristled scrub brush into the soapy water you’ve prepared, then gently go over the moldy area. If you get unsatisfactory results, opt for vinegar, an effective mold killer. With a spray bottle filled with vinegar, spritz the mold and then let the vinegar sit for an hour to work its magic. Once enough time has elapsed, proceed to wipe down the wood with a clean, damp towel. Inspect the wood for any remaining mold, and if you don’t see any, wipe the wood down with a rag.
Always wear protective gloves and eye wear when cleaning mold. Make sure you cover the skin of your arms as well as your hands. You should also wear a respirator or mask designed for work with mold spores. A N-95 respirator is available online or at some hardware stores. To increase ventilation, open windows to let fresh air inside.
It is not possible to predict the degree of severity of the health risks associated with mold in the home. Allergic individuals vary in their degree of susceptibility to mold, and any symptoms and health risk may also depend upon the extent and exact type of mold that is present.
Kill mold with white vinegar. Concentrated white vinegar can be used for heavy mold spots, while a diluted half vinegar/half water solution can be used for lighter moldy areas. Vinegar is a good solution for mold on any type of surface, including carpeting and wood.
The mold remediation industry is not well regulated in most states. Therefore, it is very easy for a customer to be taken advantage of. If you do need a professional remediation, do your homework and protect yourself.
A comprehensive outline of information here! It is a little scary how many people are not educated about this and end up living with and breathing these toxic spores. Your site is a fantastic resource! Thanks for posting!
NOSING AROUND: The spindly orange vine known as dodder (Cuscuta pentagona) is a parasitic plant. When it finds one, dodder entwines its victim and inserts nozzles into the host’s stem, siphoning of vital nutrients. Silvae, Wikimedia Commons

What We Do

A better method of initially screening a building for mold is the ERMI test. ERMI stands for Environmental Relative Moldiness Index. It utilizes quantitative polymerase chain reaction (MSQPCR) technology to identify mold in dust that has settled in buildings.
I certainly know that CIRS can be a difficult and problematic issue for some (since one of my family members tested positive for a mold mycotoxin that RealTime Labs tests for). However, I have a question that perhaps Dr. Kresser can answer. On other websites, I’ve read that Dr. Shoemaker compared haplotypes (i.e. one’s genetics) in this country to worldwide population frequencies. And, I’ve seen it written that via his method, that 90% of the United States population would end up with having genes that are of the mold susceptible type.
